Jurassic Coast Arts Programme Dates for Spring 2011

Jurassic Coast Arts Programme Dates for Spring 2011 Jurassic Journey (Artsreach and Villages in Action) Ben Osborne, highly acclaimed Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2007 and stills photographer for David Attenborough's BBC series, has been recording a visual diary of his experiences of the Jurassic Coast to provide raw material for a new touring show. Introduced to local experts, especially geologists, this stunning visual and educational presentation of the significance of this outstanding coastline is being further enhanced by an artist led collaboration with Matt Harvey (poet), Sammy Hurden (musician) and Lal Hitchcock (visual artist). It will be performed by a company of five dancers. Inspired by the similarities between the England's only natural World Heritage Site, the Jurassic Coast and the Skeleton Coast of Namibia and created in direct response to Maqoma's recent piece Skeleton Dry, the work is an exploration and reflection on the two very different regions, which are united through the rocks on which they stand. "Desert Crossings puts the vastness of geological time into perspective while delving deep into what this means for human culture. It suggests a link between our cultural and natural heritage and our present; our common humanity with South Africa and Namibia; skeletons of species alive today with the fossils of those species no longer with us." The festival will focus on the Jurassic Coast's natural heritage with activities and events in science, arts and education delivered through a wide range of partnerships. Scientists from the Natural History Museum will be in residence as in previous years, and there will be an exciting arts/science programme building on the achievements of earlier festivals. 30 April across Lyme Regis 1 May across Lyme Regis Exploratory Laboratory (Big Picture) New Technologies Seminar As part of Exploratory Laboratory, Walford Mill is hosting a series of two seminars designed to reveal the possibilities for the use of Rapid Prototyping in creative work, process, theory, illustration and application. Exploratory Laboratory is investigating the earth science and coastal processes revealed along the Jurassic Coast through the imaginative insight of visual artists. Wednesday 9th March and Wednesday 16th March, Walford Mill Processional Work (Activate) Activate, in partnership with DepARTure, Wave and Poole Borough Council will run a project called Light on Time across Poole and Bournemouth in spring term, with the carnival archive at the Dorset Records Centre and the Jurassic Coast gallery in the Dorset County Musuem as starting points. This is a pilot project for a more ambitious intergenerational project at the same time in 2012. 26 March Final Procession: Poole Quay, 6.30pm Bog Standard or Beautiful (Dorset Design and Heritage Forum) Whilst the stunning setting of the Jurassic Coast lends itself to artistic inspiration we are also mindful of our responsibility to citizens of the world to protect the site and only make additions which will truly compliment the location and stand the test of time with regard to sensitivity, content and applicability. Therefore we devised, in consultation with Public Art South West - a ‘Public Art Code of Practice'. We are currently working with partners on the Durlston project, Chesil Beach project, Seaton and Exmouth Visitor Centres, and excitingly, work will start on Charmouth Bridge in January 2011, and the bridge is planned to open at Easter 2011. Coastal Voices (Lighthouse, Poole; Serious Music and B Sharp) Coastal Voices is an exciting new choral project for both experienced and aspiring singers and music makers of Dorset and East Devon to connect with the voice of the coastal area including England's only natural World Heritage Site and to the Cultural Olympics in 2012. Beginning in early 2011, the project will offer participants the opportunity to work with renowned British and international musicians and ultimately perform new commissions created for the project in London, and Poole and Weymouth as part of the Jurassic Coast Earth Festival, in the lead up to the sailing events in Weymouth and Portland. Commissions will be agreed and a coordinator in place by March 2011 with work in communities starting in April. Inspiration Aspiration East Devon (DAISI) Devon Arts in Schools Initiative (DAISI) have been planning this project for the last year or so, and are moving into the classroom stage of the project in January. They are working with the Axe Valley and Exmouth Learning Partnerships throughout the spring term. The celebration of the Axe Valley partnership will connect in some way to the Fossil Festival 2011, and the Exmouth partnership will connect in some way to the regeneration of the town and particularly to developments at Orcombe Point. Winter Women, a Walk of Life Movement Workshop (Helen Poynor) An intensive workshop for women led by international movement artist and teacher Helen Poyner. Walk of Life workshops are an encounter with the place where land and sea meet on the World Heritage Coast. Held in partnership with the Jurassic Coast's Arts programme, Creative Coast.
