The Condors and Bottom, the Combat Machete
NEW IMPORTS Top, the Hog Sticker Machete The Condors and bottom, the Combat Machete. Either blade would make a very useful light-duty trail knife for maintaining paths through heavy HAVE LANDED! vegetation. Left to right, the Condor Pipe Knife Dagger, Condor This new line from Central America combines Multi-Knife and Condor Jungle Bowie. The Jungle the best jungle designs with modern materials. Bowie was my pick of the three for all-round B Y S te V E N D I C K usefulness. While practically every Central and South American country has its own machete industry, there are a small number of brands that seem to be universally popular south of the Rio Grande. Tramontina from Brazil, Colima from Guatemala, and Imacasa from El Salvador are three of the big names. WI particularly remember one trip to Costa Rica when I asked some of the locals about the Larsson machetes made in that country. I was quickly told that they considered the Imacasa products far superior to their own local brand. Finding Imacasa knives and machetes has been kind of a hit and miss proposition in the U.S. I have the impression that the big hardware distrib- utors tend to go with the low bidder each time they place a large machete order. As a result, you never know what brand you will find in the local retailer from month to month. In the case of Imacasa, that may be changing. A new company, Condor Tool and Knife, is now importing a wide variety of blades and tools from El Salvador. -
1. How Should I Look After My Opinel Knife ? Avoid Leaving It in Damp Environments for Too Long
1. How should I look after my Opinel knife ? Avoid leaving it in damp environments for too long. Grease the metal parts regularly. Dry the blade using a dry cloth after each use. 2. How do you sharpen an Opinel knife ? Use an Opinel fine‐grain natural stone on a dry, degreased blade. As if you wanted to cut the stone, move the blade from the base towards the tip, at an angle of 18/20 degrees. A wide angle will thicken the cutting edge: it will be more resistant but less sharp. A small angle will thin the cutting edge: it will be less resistant but sharper. A burr forms on the opposite side of the blade. Remove this by passing this side over the stone, without pressing. To finish off, pass both sides over the stone, twice. 3. Can I put my Opinel knife in the dishwasher ? Folding knives are not designed to be washed in the dishwasher. You can wash them by hand, being careful never to leave them soaking in the water and to dry and grease them properly afterwards. Fixed‐ blade kitchen knives with stainless steel blades can be put in the dishwasher. Make sure you use washing and rinsing products from the same brand. Place your knife in the cutlery basket with the blade downwards. Once the washing cycle has finished, dry your knife and put it away. 4. What is the difference between a carbon blade and a stainless steel blade ? The carbon blade has an unparalleled cutting quality and sharpens very easily. -

The name, personifies Spyderco’s line of folding knives with clips. The verb refers to the physical action of being able to clip the knife to your clothing. We’re human and creatures of convenience. Minute by minute we create, adjust and are predisposed to gravitate to the tool that performs best and is easily applied to the task in front of us. Illustrating that instinctive quest for the best, explains the success of the CLIPIT knife. Almost all Spyderco knives are CLIPITs. The idea surfaced in the 1980s when Sal Glesser (Spyderco’s founder) imagined, then designed, a folding pocketknife with three revolutionary features: A clothing clip, a way to open the knife with one-hand (The Spyderco Round Hole) and serrations on a folding knife blade. These concepts lifted pocketknife function to a higher level. Clips shifted the knife’s weight from the bottom of a pocket to the top, attaching the knife inside so it sat/rode flat regardless of size and wasn’t as likely to be dropped or lost. The Spyderco Round Hole enabled the folder’s blade to open with one hand, leaving your other hand free. -
