The name, personifies Spyderco’s line of folding knives with clips. The verb refers to the physical action of being able to clip the knife to your clothing. We’re human and creatures of convenience. Minute by minute we create, adjust and are predisposed to gravitate to the tool that performs best and is easily applied to the task in front of us. Illustrating that instinctive quest for the best, explains the success of the CLIPIT knife. Almost all Spyderco knives are CLIPITs. The idea surfaced in the 1980s when Sal Glesser (Spyderco’s founder) imagined, then designed, a folding pocketknife with three revolutionary features: A clothing clip, a way to open the knife with one-hand (The Spyderco Round Hole) and serrations on a folding knife blade. These concepts lifted pocketknife function to a higher level. Clips shifted the knife’s weight from the bottom of a pocket to the top, attaching the knife inside so it sat/rode flat regardless of size and wasn’t as likely to be dropped or lost. The Spyderco Round Hole enabled the folder’s blade to open with one hand, leaving your other hand free.

  • Best Factory Knives of Blade's First 40 Years
BEST FACTORY KNIVES OF BLADE’S FIRST 40 YEARS Table of Contents Chapter 1 Best Factory Knives 1973-1988 Chapter 2 Best Factory Knives 1989-2000 Chapter 3 Best Factory Knives 2001-2012 Chapter 1 Best Factory Knives 1973-1988 They may have been your father’s knives or your grandfather’s knives—they may even be your knives. To help celebrate its 40th anniversary, BLADE released a three-part series recognizing the top 40 factory knives over that span (1973-2013). The first chapter pinpoints the top factory knives from 1973-88. We compiled a list of some top factory knives over that stretch and submitted them to a panel of veteran knife observers and asked them to select their top five to 10—or however many they felt comfortable choosing. Though “top factory knives” can be subjective, we determined a top factory knife is one that excelled in terms of setting a standard that other companies attempted to emulate, and/or excelled in quality of craftsmanship, originality and creativity—or both. We no doubt inadvertently omitted knives that should be included. As a result, we asked our panel members to add those and rank them in their lists, too. The panel members: knife writers James Morgan Ayres, BLADE field editor Kim Breed, Durwood Hollis, Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall-Of-Fame member Bernard Levine and Mac Overton; Pete Cohan, former curator of the National Knife Museum; writer/photographer Terrill Hoffman; Roy Huntington, editor of American Handgunner Magazine; and Rick Thronburg of William Henry. Some of the knives ranked herein were made before 1973.

  • Twenty Three Hundred Years of Swords
KNEWSLETTTER IN A KNUTSHELL For over 2300 years Boar Hunting with a Knife Club Knife Order form Japanese Show theme Model Number two Snakewood Custom Knife Competition Our international membership is happily involved with “Anything that goes ‘cut’!” February 2015 Twenty Three Hundred Years of Swords Michael Bell For over 2300 years the smiths in Japan have been smelting and forging iron and steel to make a wide variety of tools, weapons and agricultural implements. Around 900 a.d., the Japanese sword, that iconic artifact of skill in forging, coupled with heroic feats of battle, had achieved the form it retains to the present day. In the late 16th century a new method of reducing ore and refi ning the iron and steel was developed which resulted in greater production at a lower price. This shows up in swords made after that time, known as shinto, or Along with Japanese exports of knives and tools went new “new swords.” words, like sanmai, meaning three layers, santoku, three functions or uses, or hamon, the pattern of a differentially heat treated edge. And it is not uncommon now to see a bowie knife made with a hamon, forged from sanmai constructed steel. Likewise, American smiths are successfully practicing arts hitherto done only in Japan, such as swords and traditional cooking knives and woodworking tools. Japanese patterns for knives used in the kitchen have grown in popularity to the degree that the big names in Europe, such as Wusthof and Trident and many of our own cutlery companies, make a version of the above mentioned santoku.

  • Emerson La Griffe Neck Knife by Chris Fry
Emerson La Griffe Neck Knife www.EmersonKnives.com By Chris Fry I recently had a conversation with Darkvibe from NYFirearms.com about small fixed blade knives and the Emerson La Griffe came up. DV had just picked one up at a gun show and really liked the knife, so after speaking we both thought a review was in order. As with other reviews I have done for my website and various online forums I’ll add this disclaimer; I am not a professional reviewer and the thoughts expressed here are what I believe to be important to someone who may want to purchase a La Griffe. Design Background As Ernest Emerson states on his website, the La Griffe (claw) knife design comes from Europe. It is a design from noted French knife-maker Fredric Perrin. Perrin is a veteran of the French Army; an expert in survival under extreme conditions as well as a dedicated martial artist. He has designed many “fighting” knives with two of his most popular being his custom Le Shark and La Griffe knives. Emerson liked the design so much he got permission from Perrin to manufacture his own version (as did Spyderco with the Spyderco SPOT La Griffe). Perrin Le Shark Perrin La Griffe MDTS, LLC 2009 LLC MDTS, 1 The hook or claw of the Emerson La Griffe is similar to that of a Karambit (sometimes spelled Kerambit) design. These designs are meant to simulate the claws of predatory animals. The Karambit was first Emerson Waved Karambit Folder brought to the US from Southeast Asia in the 1950’s but went largely unnoticed until recent interest via the martial arts community.

And when it comes to kitchen knives, none are more extraordinary than those crafted by master bladesmith Murray Carter. MURRAY CARTER MURRAY CARTER A native of Halifax, Canada, Murray Carter fell in love with Japanese culture as a teenager. At age 18, he visited Japan and met Sensei Yasuyuki Sakemoto, a 16th-generation bladesmith whose lineage originated with some of the most revered sword makers of Japan’s feudal era. Carter’s remarkable relationship with Sensei Sakemoto ultimately led to a demanding six-year apprenticeship and an additional 12 years of experience as a village bladesmith in Japan. Now the official heir to a 420-year-old family tradition as the 17th Generation Yoshimoto Bladesmith, Carter is regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on Japanese kitchen cutlery.
