Press Conference: Acclaimed Director PRESS RELEASE October 4, 2016 Press Conference: Acclaimed Director Shunji IWAI Appears to Highlight Japan Now Section A press conference was heldthrough to highlight Film the to TokyoJapan Now International Film Festival (TIFF)’s Japan Now section, followed by a screening of internationally acclaimed creator Shunji IWAI’s latest film, A Bride for Rip Van Winkle, at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan (FCCJ) this evening, on October 4. Following a welcoming address from Yasushi SHIINA, Tokyo International Film Festival Director General, the Programming Advisor of the Japan Now section, Kohei ANDO, talked about the lineup for the second year of the section, which is devoted to outstanding Japanese directors. ©2016 TIFF Along with special English-subtitled screenings of new films to boost their recognition internationally, there will also be special guest appearances. These will include Makoto Shinkai, director of your name., Kiyoshi Kurosawa, director of Daguerrotype, Koji Fukada, director of Harmonium, and many more. This year’s Japan Now Director in Focus, Shunji Iwai, whose groundbreaking style and youth-focused vision have been internationally hailed in his masterworks, was welcomed as a special guest at the press conference. He will also appear for Q&A sessions during TIFF. Over the 10-day celebration, more than 200 films will be screened and there will be unique film-related events every day at the festival venues, including stage appearances, Q&A sessions and symposia featuring celebrated guests from around the world. *The lineup and guests for Japan Now are listed on the following page. The 29th TIFF will take place from October 25 to November 3, 2016 at Roppongi Hills, EX Theater Roppongi (Minato City) and other venues in Tokyo. Notes and Quotes from the Press Conference Yasushi Shiina, Director General, Tokyo International Film Festival This year, TIFF will be showing the past, present, and future in films. The Japan Now Section features present Japan. And this year, in our new Youth Section, we will focus on films that portray children and teens, so that represents the future. We hope to bring in younger audiences, as they will be the generation to carry on the future of cinema. So, while the Youth Section looks to the future, the Japanese Classics Section revisits the history of Japanese cinema. Kohei Ando, Japan Now Programming Advisor Q: How did you select the films for the Director in Focus? A: It was so hard to narrow the selection down to just a few films, because Mr. Iwai has made so many wonderful pieces. Fireworks, Should We See it from the Side or the Bottom? was his first work that brought my attention to his name, Love Letter was an unbelievable feat for a first feature, Swallowtail Butterfly and Vampire are infused with his distinct aesthetics, and he has topped himself with A Bride for Rip Van Winkle. Q: When selecting the films for the Japan Now Section, is it your main criteria that they have international appeal? A: I just want to show good films. Now, a “good” film is difficult to define, so my own personal taste also goes into the selection. But I try to choose films that reflect Japan as it is today. Shunji Iwai, director Q: Do you have any plans for a co-production with China in the future? China is a rapidly expanding market, but as a director with a certain style, I welcome it. If the market opens up and expands, hopefully, there will be a trickle-down effect where the larger market can make more room for art films as well. Q: Any plans to venture into the Russia market? A: I think the Russians make quality films. They have this Dostoyevskian scale to them. I understand that the Russian people love a long story, so if the opportunity were ever to arrive, I would be more than happy to do something. Perhaps I could follow in the footsteps of Kurosawa, like when he did Dersu Uzala. Q: Do you have plans to continue directing animation films? A: I take my own personal approach to creating animated work. I have a team with me, and we produce music clips as well. I also like to draw, so working on animation brings me that joy. Greedy as it may sound, I would like continue to create both live action and animated work. The Case of Hana and Alice was shown in Europe this year, so in Europe I believe people see me as more of an animation director. Q: Is there any significance for you as a director to having your films shown at festivals, as opposed to having them released commercially? A: It is a good opportunity for me as a director to lay back and enjoy my films together with the fans and critics. There’s unbelievable pressure that comes with commercial releases, so festivals are a place where I can relax more. Shunji Iwai Shunji Iwai’s directing career began in 1988 with commercials, music videos and TV dramas. His cinematic style and vision came to be hailed as the “Iwai Aesthetic.” In 1995, he scored a huge hit across Asia with Love Letter. The Japanese Film Festival is one of the highlights of the ongoing celebrations. This year’s films will open a door on Japanese life. Her Love Boils Bathwater won a Best Actress Award, at the 40th Japan Academy Awards, in addition to Best Supporting Actress and Best Rookie. The festival’s prestigious line up continues with Japan’s entry to the 2017 Oscars, Nagasaki: Memories of My Son starring Kazunari Ninomiya, star of Japanese boy band Arashi. One of the most unique titles is Happy Hour, a 5 hour highlight which won the Best Actress Award at the Locarno Festival. Of course there is the usual selection of anime titles, including a special preview of Sword Art Online The Movie. We are delighted to have a total of 21 different titles at this year’s Festival showing in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dundalk, Waterford, Sligo, Maynooth and Dublin.

An always looming presence, the first chapter is always theoretically sketched, perhaps even drafted, but the rest are generally to be filed under “fiction.” The same, of course, happened for me, and throughout this endeavor I have learned to draft, to re-read and edit, and most especially to never be afraid to start over. My primary goal was to hone my writerly voice, to elevate from description into argument and most of all, to slow down. Time and financial pressures are plentiful, and early in the writing process I wanted to rush; to achieve quickly what was later revealed to me something that could not and should not be rushed. I chose to write chapter by chapter as the films and genre categories presented themselves, allowing myself to enjoy each chapter’s research process in small achievable steps. Integral to this process are my co-supervisors, Associate Professor Lalitha Gopalan and Professor Emeritus Janet Staiger. If you’re a fan of superstar idol Atsuko Maeda, we have two of her films: Initiation Love, a romance with a dark twist, and Tamako in Moratorium about an unemployed university graduate living with her father. 2016 is the 5th anniversary of the Great East Japan earthquake. Joy of Man’s Desiring is a film that explores the impact an unnamed earthquake has on children who lost their parents in the disaster. Informed by the director’s own childhood experience after the 1995 Kobe earthquake this film won a special mention at the 64th Berlin International Film Festival.

    DOSSIER DE PRESSE 17ème FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL DE CINÉMA ASIATIQUE DE TOURS FICAT 14-23 mars 2016 Femmes, femmes De retour avec le printemps le FICAT et ses partenaires (Cinémathèque de Tours, Collège au cinéma 37, Parfum Culture, Ciclic, Médiathèque de Saint-Avertin, l'Instant, Ciné-ma différence et T. V. Tours) sont de nouveau cette année au rendez-vous du cinéma asiatique. Les femmes seront au cœur du festival. Les grands réalisateurs classiques : Ozu Y., Naruse M., Mizoguchi K., Ray S. nous donnent de très beaux portraits d'héroïnes qui doivent faire face à leur époque et à une société en pleine mutation. Grenade, jeune femme enceinte de Shadow Days est, elle aussi, le jouet de l'Histoire et pourtant nous sommes dans la Chine contemporaine. Les femmes aujourd'hui semblent être en proie à un certain désarroi face au monde moderne et l'interrogation est au centre de leur démarche (Tout un monde lointain, Red Amnesia, Le cœur régulier...). Heureusement, comme toujours chez Miyazaki, les petites héroïnes n'ont pas froid aux yeux et vont de l'avant. Kiki, la petite sorcière ne fait pas exception. Nous prévoyons d'accueillir, avec le plus grand plaisir, Zhao Dayong, Davy Chou, Mia Ma, Alain Mazars, Patrick Laurent, Philippe Rostan, Vanja d'Alcantara, Isabelle Carré ... Huit films seront en compétition, le jury décernera son prix (La Toile de Lumière du peintre Guy Romer) et le public le sien lors de la soirée de clôture le mardi 22 mars.
