Alan Sillitoe the LONELINESS of the LONG- DISTANCE RUNNER
Alan Sillitoe THE LONELINESS OF THE LONG- DISTANCE RUNNER Published in 1960 The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner Uncle Ernest Mr. Raynor the School-teacher The Fishing-boat Picture Noah's Ark On Saturday Afternoon The Match The Disgrace of Jim Scarfedale The Decline and Fall of Frankie Buller The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner AS soon as I got to Borstal they made me a long-distance cross-country runner. I suppose they thought I was just the build for it because I was long and skinny for my age (and still am) and in any case I didn't mind it much, to tell you the truth, because running had always been made much of in our family, especially running away from the police. I've always been a good runner, quick and with a big stride as well, the only trouble being that no matter how fast I run, and I did a very fair lick even though I do say so myself, it didn't stop me getting caught by the cops after that bakery job. You might think it a bit rare, having long-distance crosscountry runners in Borstal, thinking that the first thing a long-distance cross-country runner would do when they set him loose at them fields and woods would be to run as far away from the place as he could get on a bellyful of Borstal slumgullion--but you're wrong, and I'll tell you why. The first thing is that them bastards over us aren't as daft as they most of the time look, and for another thing I'm not so daft as I would look if I tried to make a break for it on my longdistance running, because to abscond and then get caught is nothing but a mug's game, and I'm not falling for it. -

HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007
1 HBO: Brand Management and Subscriber Aggregation: 1972-2007 Submitted by Gareth Andrew James to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English, January 2011. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ........................................ 2 Abstract The thesis offers a revised institutional history of US cable network Home Box Office that expands on its under-examined identity as a monthly subscriber service from 1972 to 1994. This is used to better explain extensive discussions of HBO‟s rebranding from 1995 to 2007 around high-quality original content and experimentation with new media platforms. The first half of the thesis particularly expands on HBO‟s origins and early identity as part of publisher Time Inc. from 1972 to 1988, before examining how this affected the network‟s programming strategies as part of global conglomerate Time Warner from 1989 to 1994. Within this, evidence of ongoing processes for aggregating subscribers, or packaging multiple entertainment attractions around stable production cycles, are identified as defining HBO‟s promotion of general monthly value over rivals. Arguing that these specific exhibition and production strategies are glossed over in existing HBO scholarship as a result of an over-valuing of post-1995 examples of „quality‟ television, their ongoing importance to the network‟s contemporary management of its brand across media platforms is mapped over distinctions from rivals to 2007. -

I am here in Beacon, New York with Ed Tucker and John McGilcrest, both of whom grew up in the Morrissania section of the Bronx. We'll start with how your families first came to the neighborhood, and we will do you, Ed, first. When did your family first move to the Bronx? Ed Tucker (ET): My father came from Georgia and my mother came from Philadelphia, and I think they arrived after World War II. My father was a veteran. MN: Right, now did they move directly from the South to the Bronx or did they live in Harlem first? ET: You know, I am not sure. MN: John, what about your family? When did they move to the Bronx? John McGilcrest (JM): OK, my family is basically a Jamaican extract. -

Albert King • Born Under a Bad Sign
Albert King - Born Under a Bad Sign - The Audio Beat - www.TheAudioBeat.com 30.05.18, 0953 Music Reviews Albert King • Born Under a Bad Sign Stax/Speakers Corner S273 180-gram LP 1967/2018 Music Sound by Vance Hiner | May 30, 2018 lbert King’s family was so poor that his first instrument was made from a cigar box, a piece of brushwood and some string. Being a left-hander, when King finally bought his first real guitar, for $1.25, he taught himself to play it upside down. This, along with some alternate tunings, caused him to pull stings in unexpected directions, imbuing his style with a piercing, wailing signature. Early in his career, King was nicknamed "the Velvet Bulldozer," partly because his smooth and melodic vocal style served as a counterpoint to that more aggressive instrumental attack. King’s legacy is full of contradictions and struggles, and recordings that fell considerably short of his prodigious talent. Depending upon whom you believe, he was born Albert Nelson in either Indianola or Aberdeen, Mississippi, in 1923 or 1924 and reached a standing height somewhere between 6’4’’ and 6’ 7". But let there be no mistake about the man’s musical stature; it would be difficult to understate King’s influence on electric guitarists and singers. Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn both cited Born Under a Bad Sign as a watershed album that modernized the blues and widened the genre’s influence. Eric Clapton has said that hearing the album prompted him to quit the supergroup Cream and attempt to push past his own musical boundaries.
