The growth of science fiction as a literature has developed scores of new writers. Tire majority of the names in the .roster of. science fiction writers have only one or two stories to their credit. Sometimes a writer catches on and he becomes a professional. Duking the past ten ye^rsu^ new kind of writer has developed. He is^ tech nically trained -man/ or at least with a firm foundation of science, and he'writesi'as. a sideline to his regulaY profession. Such writers as John "W.; Qamob'ell.,. Jr., Robert a. Heinlein, Isaac nsimovp 3. 3. Smith, Plxf D.,. A. ■ 3...van Vogt, etc., are names to . con j urc. with in the field of science fiction. However one should not forget that there are many professional writers who make their living by writing science fiction. Such famous names as Eando Binder, Henry Mutt nor and Ray p.u mm in gs are only three of the remarkable people who have contributed to ©^literature;; Of all the professional writers in the field of fanrlsy and scionec., fiction none have been criticized as .much, both pro 'and con, as Ray Cummings, The Grand Old Master. .A great many- fans reared upon an exclusive diet; of. ASTOUNDING or iMASINCf .STORIES will immediately have strokes when. Cumming’s name; is mentioned as The Grand Old Master. However, they should not for get the qualities that go to make up such a title. Onf is the abil-’ ity towithstand the ravages of time. Cummings has been writing for over ttrcnty-fivo yors. His better novels arc colicctors’s items,' and when reprinted still sell well. A discussion of several will follow, h tc rek second quality of writing is.whether or not a piece of work .appeals to c few people or many people. -For example, the - bcst\y/pf'k of Cummings.-appecis to the intelligent f-ns, but it also appeals to the general public. This was ascertained by talking with peopre who were not fens who had road Cummings1 novels, and most im portant of 11, ■ trying, out some, of Cummings1 novels on pcciplc not indoctrinatei with sditncc-fiction. Three sets were selected.■ One was thbest novels of Cummings, a second, the poorest stories J and the third a. mixture of both. The best novels were all praise d, the poor stories were neye'r finished dub to their sc men ass, and the mixed series raised a howl on the poor material, end they asked me if I had ny more'of th good stuff. That is the best test one can make. an important point in any writer is appeal as a human-being in hie oh rekrs. Fpr example,' Cumming^ do s hot write . bout supermen, or supar-dup.cr heroes.who with on; hand and a ray gun lick whole con-, iingt.nts of’th-_ foe. In re 1 life that docs not happen very often, ana when it. do . s ticrens usually no surviving hero as has been borne out many times, in the past two World Wars. Cummings’ -.hero.os-arc simple, ordin- ry people like you and mo. They muddle through, .make mist-kes end survive by. r. series of fortuitious circumstances just as we do0 ..Consequently they mirror ourselves. His stories laid in the future are really Saturday Evening Post type of stories with common place hie ract .rs. To .fins rccrcd on mutants, super-men, etc., they arc tarn.: stuff; but they should not be r. ad with that viewpoint. They arc intcns ...ly huiif n and .human in action. The women -re seldom amaz ons. but like the girl you merry, a little dumb at >Ijiws', brilliant -at others,
