It is based upon the Shri Minakshi Sundareswar, The Great Temple at Madura, South India, visited by the author in i960. The formal arrangement of this temple is the pivot around -which the examination of the principles of architectural symbolism revolves. The general principles as well as the particular symbolic expressions are elucidated by constant reference to the sacred texts of the Hindu tradition. The key to all this is the Hindu doctrine itself, but no attempt could be made to expose its integrality on these pages. However, the introduction and the footnotes contain sufficient references and brief explanations to enable one to follow the theme without undue difficulty even if the subject were unfamiliar. The study develops the meaning of the architectural layout by approaching the temple from the outside and gradually progressing towards its core. During this passage the nature of symbolism is discovered in successively higher degrees until it becomes clear that the temple - in its detail as well as in its entirety - is a meta physical symbol and its construction a metaphysical rite. It expresses by means of silent architectural forms the selfsame doctrine which is recorded verbally in the sacred texts. In smaller communities the temple apan from being a source of spiritual or religious comfort, also serves as center for education and recreation. A temple is also a treasure house of art and architecture, designed according to the principle of vaastu shastra, characterized by their majesty, serenity and beauty ofintricate sculpture and designs. Sources of Ancient Indian Iconography: - Vedas are the primary sources of all ideology of the Indian culture. Various forms of various deities have been praised in the Vedas, icons or idols have mentioned in the various eulogies of Vedas. Many deities were conceived in Indian religions. Different sect of Brahmin religion such as Shaivite, Vaishnavism, Shakt, and solar belong to Siva, Vishnu, Shakti and Sun deities respectively. Similarly, Jain and Buddhism are related to Tirthankaras and Buddha respectively. The Brahmin literature: - The early literature of various religions gives a description of the imagination, origin and development of various deities. Various stories, events and different themes related to the deities are found in the early religious literatures such as Vedic texts, Puranas and later Vedic literature. In the Rigveda, Yajurveda, Atharvaveda, Taittariya Samhita, Shatapatha Brahmana, Aitreya Brahmana, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Vayu Purana, Vishnu Purana, Shiva Purana, Markandeya Purana, Matsya Purana, Linga Purana, Harivansh Purana, Padma Purana, Brahma Purana, Devi Bhagavata Purana and Garuna Purana has described the character and nature of Gods and Goddesses, their stories, Armaments, hobbies and interrelations etc. In all the Puranas, the ten chapters of the ancient Matsya Purana described the shape and size of the idols. In this Purana, the details related to the Shivalinga and the human idols of Shiva are presented prominently. The sixteen chapter of Agni Purana describe iconography. In addition to the Saiva and Vaishnav idols in this Purana Devi (Goddess) and sun idols have been discussed. Kannan, M.Tech. 1 Preface Ilayatrakkudi (popularly Ilayathangudi), a kshetra in Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu, became famous during Sri Mahaswamigal‟s time. Sri Mahaswamigal had stayed in Ilayatrakkudi for two years in 1961/62 along with Pujya Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamigal. The first Vyasa Bharata Agama Shilpa Sadas was held at that time in Ilayathangudi. Commemorating the visit of Sri Swamigal and his Anushthanams performed at the temple tank, the residents of the town have constructed a Mantapam with Maha Swamy Murthi in stone on the banks of the temple tank, known as Pralaya Tirtha. The Adhishthanam of 65th Sankaracharya of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, Jagadguru Sri Sudarsana Mahadevendra Saraswathi Swamigal is also located in Ilayatrakkudi. The Adhishthanam was renovated recently. Our present Acharya Swamigal visited Ilayatrakkudi in 2019 and again in 2021. The name Ilayatrakkudi, Sramapanodanapuram in Samskrit as per Brahmanda Puranam, is itself very unique and interesting. It means the city which relieves the devotees of weariness and fatigue. The Sthala Puranam cites at least three instances of the kshetra blessing the devotees with renewed vigour coupled with relief from exhaustion. This book, an abridged prose version of the Sthala Puranam, is a translation of the book in Tamil by Sri R. Visvanatha Iyer, published in 1963. This is a unique Sthala Puranam containing breathtaking accounts of the experiences of many devotees, who obtained the rare grace and direct blessings of Sri Kailasanatha Swamy and Devi Nithyakalyani of Ilayatrakkudi (Sramapanodanapuram).

They are here to make us understand and realize the divinity which is existing in the entire creation. From Bhagavathi Amman temple in Kanyakumari to Ksheer Bhavani Temple in Kashmir, there are thousands of temples in India. Also, there are several Kshetrams like Jyotirlinga Kshetras, 51 Shakti Peethams, Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, Kshetras in origin of rivers, confluence of rivers and confluence of river and sea. In the Himalayan Kingdom of Nepal there are thousands of temples. Kailasha Parvatha in the Himalayas is also to be noted. Worshipping divinity in Vigrahas is an intrinsic part of our system. By this worship method, we attain divine energy, concentration power, involvement in Sadvishsyas. Temples are classified in to three types, Swayambhu, Rishi Pratishtha & Manava Pratishtha. The third type is based on Shilpa Shastras, Agama Shastras (Shaiva & Vaishnava) and Vaidika Paddhati as ordained by Maharishis.
