FY16 Annual Report a Letter from Our CEO FY16 Annual Report A Letter From Our CEO Dear Friends, I’ve often heard people say that Corps are one of America’s best kept secrets. For all the people familiar with the tremendous impact Corps have on our young people and communities, there are many more who have never heard of these programs. However, I’m pleased to report that, every year, Corps become less of a secret and are increasingly seen as a go-to strategy for addressing community and conservation needs. Corps had several moments on the national stage in 2016. In the spring, the 21st Century Conservation Service Corps (21CSC) Act – legislation that would facilitate partnerships between Corps and federal agencies, and improve pathways to employment for Corps alumni – was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives (and in the Senate in 2015). I am pleased to report that, at the very end of the year, the National Park Service Centennial Act was signed into law, containing provisions that will help Corps engage more veterans, and help Corpsmembers translate skills they learn during their service into careers on public lands. Throughout the year, Corps participated alongside elected and federal officials in events to recognize the 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service. By hosting service events, Corps helped launch the Obama Administration’s Every Kid in a Park initiative and Let’s Move Outside! Campaign in several cities across the country. A Corps alumni introduced the President at the National Christmas Tree Lighting. The 21CSC received millions of dollars in donations from private funders and companies like REI, as well as millions in project funding from the federal resource management agencies; articles and op-eds in support of Corps appeared in The Atlantic, on CNN.com, and in various outdoor publications; and a segment on Corps ran on the CBS Sunday Morning show. Beyond these intangible gains, Corps grew by a number of metrics in 2016. Compared to the previous year, Corps enrolled more Corpsmembers, generated more community volunteer hours, restored more waterways, educated more community members about conservation and energy efficiency, doubled the acres of habitat restored, and more than doubled the miles of trail improved. Of course, the most important outcome for Corps cannot be measured: the sense of purpose and civic responsibility Corpsmembers develop through service to our country. By participating in projects that make appreciable improvements to communities and public lands, our young people learn the value of hard work and develop in-demand job skills; our veterans learn how to leverage their skills for meaningful work here at home. That is invaluable. I hope you enjoy reading our 2016 annual report and learning about how Corps strengthen America through Service and Conservation. Accreditation is granted to Corps that can demonstrate a high level of accountability to funders and donors, as well as the capacity to provide meaningful programming to Corpsmembers and quality results to community C O E and project partners. R C P N S E The Accreditation program is administered by an advisory C LL EN CE committee of former Conservation Corps leaders, former federal land TER OF EX management agency staff, and other experts in Corps and youth programming. To become Accredited, a Corps must undergo an in-depth review of its general operations, youth programming operations, governance standards, financial management practices, and risk management guidelines. The process involves a site visit as well as a thorough assessment of the Corps’ administrative documents and policies. In addition to receiving general Accreditation, Corps can invite additional scrutiny to become Accredited with specific endorsements that recognize their experience or capacity. Accreditation lasts for five years with the requirement that Corps provide an annual update to the advisory committee.     A SERVICE YEAR A CULTURAL EXPECTATION, A COMMON OPPORTUNITY, AND A CIVIC RITE OF PASSAGE FOR EVERY YOUNG AMERICAN THE VISION The Franklin Project envisions a future in which a year of full-time national service — a service year — is a cultural expectation, a common opportunity, and a civic rite of passage for every young American. Each person can fulfill his or her national service obligation by joining the military or by completing a full-time civilian service year through programs such as Teach for America, AmeriCorps, and the Peace Corps, or any eligible nonprofit. A modest living allowance would be provided for the service year, which would be completed at some point between the ages of 18-28. THEORY OF THE FRANKLIN PROJECT We believe that spending a year in full-time service is a transformative experience for young citizens and future leaders. We’re focused on promoting a service year as a civic rite of passage because it will connect individuals to something bigger than themselves and to the idea that citizenship requires more from each of us than is currently expected. I was recently selected as an Ambassador/Fellow. The fellowship is an unpaid year-long fellowship supported by the Aspen Institute to promote National service which includes service in the Military and Public Service. 50 Ambassadors/Fellows were chosen from across the United States and all Ambassadors were at the 3 day training. I previously served in two Americorps programs; City Year and Public Allies. The Aspen Institute/Franklin Project Aspen Institute (Ambassadors) is leading the effort to improve citizenship by giving every young person in America the opportunity to serve. (UWSCM), along with local food pantries and elementary schools. Paul Sullivan, Administrative Coordinator. At the Sturbridge Marshalls, contacted the United Way stating TJX Company stores, which Marshalls is one, were removing masks and hand sanitizer from their shelves and they would like them to be donated to local charitable organiza- tions. Mr. Sullivan thought of the United Way of South Central MA as a perfect recipient since UWSCM has 22 member agencies that assistant many children from toddlers to teens and adult programs that could benefit from these donat- ed goods.     COVID-19 Community Innovation Stories In the face of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak, the country is seeing innovations in communities that highlight the best of American ingenuity. We highlight these stories to show how many people are helping those around them, and prompt everyone to think about how they can help others.1 WASHINGTON – The whole-of-America response to COVID-19 pandemic continues across the country as nonprofit organizations work hand-in-hand with FEMA and other Federal agencies to support communities affected by COVID-19 while continuing to respond to other disasters.2 Using Technology to Deliver Services in Social Distancing Environment . The National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (National VOAD) created the Disaster Agency Response Technology (DART), a platform that allows member agencies to coordinate disaster case management, track donations, manage volunteers, and perform other tasks online.3 Using DART, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP) is performing disaster case management in Texas. Volunteers are taking calls via Zoom, FaceTime, and Skype. Team Rubicon and others are utilizing video conferencing tools like Microsoft Teams, and Blue Jeans, to hold interactive webinars on a variety of subjects relating to COVID-19. On a larger scale, organizations have gone to platforms like Monday.com to allow staff to collaborate while working remotely.4 . Information Technology Disaster Resource Center (ITDRC), comprised of volunteer technology professionals, has established Project Connect, an initiative to set up Wi-Fi hotspots in underserved communities around the country.5 . As part of an interagency agreement Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) staff is assisting Small Business Administration (SBA) with answering calls from individuals requesting information about the SBA loan program.

And all of this was only possible thanks to the outpouring of generosity from supporters like you. Because of you, we’ve engaged more of our veterans in continued service, providing them with a new community, mission, and sense of self. In turn, our volunteers deployed on 19 missions, from South Sudan to Burma, Dallas to Rockaway Beach. Whether it was EMT training, debris removal, building refugee camps, or search and rescue, we were prepared and equipped to respond whenever needed. Take a moment and review some of our highlights from the past year, and once again, thank you for being on the Team. William and Jake Cofounders of Team Rubicon 2012 OVERVIEW In 2012, Team Rubicon deployed over 350 volunteers to Hurricane Sandy programs to provide clean drinking water, repaired homes of wounded and sent teams to provide relief in the wake of one of the worst refugee veterans, built clinics, distributed medical supplies, and chainsawed crises in South Sudan. We provided training, humanitarian aid, and countless trees. assistance to help those located on the fringe of traditional disaster relief. Perhaps most importantly, it was our veterans who rose to these TR also responded to the tornadoes in Dallas, helping many repair their challenges. The organization has grown from 700 volunteers in 2011 to homes before the next storm.
