Abstract This thesis is concerned with the monastic rules that were written in seventh century Iberia and the relationship that existed between them and their intended, contemporary, audience. It aims to investigate this relationship from three distinct, yet related, perspectives: physical, literary and philological. After establishing the historical and historiographical background of the texts, the thesis investigates firstly the presence of a monastic rule as a physical text and its role in a monastery and its relationship with issues of early medieval literacy. It then turns to look at the use of literary techniques and structures in the texts and their relationship with literary culture more generally at the time. Finally, the thesis turns to issues of the language that the monastic rules were written in and the relationship between the spoken and written registers not only of their authors, but also of their audiences. -

Chaucer's entry point to this conversation was Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy , a sixth-century dialogue that tried to show how the Stoic ideals of autonomy and self-possession are not simply normative for human beings but remain within the grasp of every individual. Drawing on biblical commentary, consolation literature, and political theory, this study contends that Chaucer's interrogation of the moral and intellectual ideals of the Consolation took the form of philosophical disconsolations: scenes of profound poetic rupture in which a character, sometimes even Chaucer himself, turns to philosophy for solace and yet fails to be consoled. -

BRENDA DUNN-LARDEAU Recovering Bodily Pleasure: The Renaissance HIS ARTICLE WILL PRESENT SOME of the primary strategies Tfor the reconquest of bodily pleasure in the e~rly Renaissance, strategies which were prurr1pted by tl'le 11ew n1entality of dig1zitas hominis and which arose in reaction to the miseria hominis char acteristic of medieval Christianity's hegemonic discourse. Although our main attention will be focussed on how the body, previously considered an obstacle to salvation, could become its vety instru ment, a few notable exceptions to this trend will be considered.1 In order to fully appreciate the underlying motivation for this reaction to the hegemonic discourse of the church, it is neces sary to recall both the model of Christian happiness which exalts death over life, as well as the demanding Augustine concept, in full bloom in the Middle Ages, of sensual pleasure as an obstacle to Christian salvation. Positions such as these, which favoured the renunciation of earthly pleasure, were still in wide circulation in · Ll1e tl1irteer1tl1 a11d fou1teenth centuries. Kruger Directed by Stephen F. Brown The study of Thomas Aquinas generally focuses on theological questions in his work, and ignores certain aspects of what might be called his “spiritual life.” Though there are exceptions to this rule, there are numerous themes in the writings of Thomas Aquinas which have not been given their due. In light of this fact, this dissertation seeks to provide an extended treatment of two components of the work of Thomas Aquinas which receive little attention: the role of spiritual exercises in his writing, and the form of reflexivity—one’s understanding of and relation to one’s self—he recommends. As a way of approaching these issues, I draw from the work of two historical philosophers, Pierre Hadot and Michel Foucault, using the methodological questions they employ in their writings on the classical world. -
