TITLE: THE SELF, THE CHURCH AND MEDIEVAL IDENTITIES: THE EVOLUTION OF THE INDIVIDUAL IN MEDIEVAL LITERATURE MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Mark Amos This dissertation examines the construction of literary identities by medieval women, recognizable as an authorial voice that is distinct from those of her contemporaries yet congruent with the gender norms and expectations of her contemporary culture, in both religious and secular literatures from late antiquity through the waning of the Middle Ages. The argument posited here is that texts authored by women, as informed by concurrent male texts and the literary traditions in which individual authors seek to participate, can be read as a taxonomy of responses to the traditions individual authors appropriate and to their contemporaries, directly responding to and incorporating elements from each in order to position themselves within the literate culture by accessing the shared traditions, norms and memories of the community. Focusing on primary texts authored by women makes it possible to more fully examine the intertextual nature of women‘s identity in medieval literature, the impact of male discourse on the identities available to women as writers and as women, and the diverse positions they assign to themselves through the construction of literary identities, both orthodox and heterodox. The delimination of the culture and the traditions in which individual authors participate clarifies both the self-positioning engaged in by individual authors and the function of their text, in its native context, while placing these texts and their authors in a meaningful context for modern scholars. i The project is divided into six broadly chronological chapters which engage with key authors and place them in dialogue with both their male contemporaries and previous generations of women‘s writings. The first chapter, ―(En)Gendering Texts,‖ focuses on the texts from late antiquity which have the most measurable and lasting impact on subsequent women‘s writings and engage directly with the patristic sources for communal Christian identity in the period. The second chapter, ―Perpetua and Her Daughters,‖ highlights the role of women‘s texts in the education of both genders throughout the period and begins the process of contextualizing women‘s independent identities within the rubric of the Christian West. Chapter Three, ―Constructing a New Self,‖ approaches the letters of Heloise to Abelard and her other correspondents as a model for women‘s writing and the construction of polysemic identities within the traditions. Chapter Four, ―Re-Envisioning the Passions,‖ places mystics such as Hildegard of Bingen and Julian of Norwich in dialogue with the patristic traditions and medieval philosophy in order to illustrate the degrees of self-determination possible in women‘s texts while continuing to be viewed as orthodox. The fifth chapter examines the phenomena of affective piety, ascetic mysticism, and the uses of the body in creating a tangible identity for women writers in the period. In many ways, their texts form a taxonomy of responses to the traditions they appropriate and to their contemporaries, directly responding to and incorporating elements of each in order to position themselves within the literature by accessing the shared traditions and memories of the community. By focusing on primary texts authored by women and contemporary accounts which provide outside referents for their specific texts, it is possible to examine the intertextual nature of women‘s identity in medieval literature and the traditions within which these women saw themselves as participating. The delimination of the culture and the traditions in which the individual authors participate clarifies the function of the text itself in context and allows the reader to engage with the ways in which specific elements of their culture and material environments impact modern perceptions of medieval literature and society. In this context, the literature and the culture can be examined as separate but overlapping areas of study. This separation makes it possible to identify the impact of individual texts and events on medieval literature and thought as a whole, and helps to place these texts and their authors in a meaningful context for the modern scholar. Examining the traditions as the basis for later women‘s writings, and the representation of women as a part of the tradition, necessitates an examination of the earliest representations of women within the community, an attempt to find the origins of 2 feminine identity within the community. This is complicated by the number of representations of women which survive from the early periods, and the polysemic nature of their appearance within the community. Margot H. King‘s analysis of the origins of the anchoretic tradition provides a virtual catalog of women‘s lives from the early centuries of the church which were in wide circulation in the

FIELD University of Notre Dame Press Notre Dame, Indiana © 2012 University of Notre Dame Field-00intro_Layout 1 2/3/12 1:27 PM Page 1 Introduction Modern and Medieval Contexts On 31 May 1310, at the Place de Grève in Paris, the Dominican inquisi- tor William of Paris read out a sentence that declared Marguerite “called Porete” to be a relapsed heretic, released her to secular authority for punishment, and ordered that all copies of a book she had written be confiscated. William next consigned Marguerite’s would-be supporter, Guiard of Cressonessart, to perpetual imprisonment. Guiard was not an author, but rather what might be termed an apocalyptic activist, charged in his own mind with an angelic mission to defend the true adherents of the Lord—including Marguerite—as the time of Anti - christ grew near. The inquisitor’s sentences also sketched the bare out- lines of Marguerite’s and Guiard’s stories. Marguerite had earlier been detained by a bishop of Cambrai, her book had been burned at that time, and she had been released with a warning never again to write or speak about the ideas contained there. She chose to ignore this order, however, and communicated her book to others, including a neighbor- ing bishop. This audacity landed her before an inquisitor and the next bishop of Cambrai, and eventually led to her incarceration under Wil - liam of Paris’s jurisdiction by fall 1308.

    Sylvie Thode Mount Menoikeion Seminar June 2018 Over and Over: Cycles and Concentricity in Hildegard of Bingen’s Scivias In many religions, and especially within various Christian traditions, repetition is used as penance: a priest might tell a Catholic parishioner to repeat five Hail Mary prayers and five Our Father’s as punishment for some sin. In a more drastic example, a monk from the Middle Ages might take to flagellating himself repeatedly for something as small as an impure thought, or just simply to connect with the pain Christ felt at the Crucifixion. However, repetition can also represent moments of praise or exaltation: one need only think of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. In traditions outside Christianity as well repetitive acts of devotion are used to celebrate God and achieve closeness with the divine force. In the Turkish sect of Sufism, a mystical strain of Islam, people known as whirling dervishes twirl in a circle over and over until they essentially lose all sense of where they are, and are said to access a high plane, closer to God’s divinity. One of the key figures of Christian mysticism, St. Hildegard of Bingen who lived in Germany during the 12th century, is especially exemplary of the power of repetitive, devotional motions of prayer. Hildegard is most well-known for her extensive visions of God, the Trinity, the Universe, and Heaven: she recorded these visions in a book called Scivias, which is a truncated form of the theological phrase Sci Vias Domini, or “know the ways of the Lord.” The book is divided into three “books,” a numerological allusion to the Trinity, with each book being a collection of individual visions.

    JETS 35/4 (December 1992) 515-530 THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARGARET WINFRIED CORDUAN* In 1310, before an emotional crowd in Paris, Margaret Porette was burned at the stake. She had been charged with and convicted of being a relapsed heretic. Specifically she had authored a book that, according to high ecclesiastical authorities, had been determined to be full of errors and false teaching. Even though the book was burned she disseminated it further. Her execution drew many spectators, possibly including Meister Eckhart, who had yet to reach the peak of his popularity. There is good reason to believe that the book in question was The Mirror of Simple Souls.1 The point of this article is to call attention to the contribution made by Margaret Porette. Of necessity this task involves primarily addressing the question of the orthodoxy of the Mirror. I am going to make the following case: Margaret's views were such that by the standards of the day it is not surprising that the inquisition would find her guilty. But beyond those strictures Margaret made a lasting contribution to Christian spirituality that eventually may have been one factor in the coming of the Reforma- tion. To that extent, calling attention to her thought is also to commend her thought to Christendom at large. I. It has most frequently been proclaimed the first autobiography in English, seemingly more as a marketing ploy than as a result of careful analysis of genre. In reality, Kempe's book occupies an uncomfortable space between first person and third person, written (and even this is problematic) by a self who calls herself "this creature." Yet it is not hagiography either. The Book falls short of the criteria of hagiography for practical reasons – to name only a few, Margery Kempe has not been canonized and she has no proper "vita," the primary criterion for which is posthumous creation.

    Transformed Within, Transformed Without: The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays Emily Ciavarella Kuntz Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Emily Ciavarella Kuntz All Rights Reserved Abstract Transformed Within, Transformed Without: The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays Emily Ciavarella Kuntz My dissertation investigates the ways in which both medieval and early modern saint plays depict and incite religious conversion through self-aware theatrical techniques. In each of my chapters, I examine one or two popular saint plays from a given period and area (medieval England, medieval France, early modern Spain, and early modern England) and show how each play invites the audience to undergo a spiritual shift parallel to that of the saint protagonist. These playmakers harnessed the affective power and technology of theatrical performance to invite the audience to engage with performed religious conversion in a controlled, celebratory environment and to encourage them to convert toward a more deeply felt Christianity. The plays reconfigured the audience’s sensory and intellectual understanding of Christian theology in order for the audience to recognize spiritual truth within an inherently communal, participatory, and performative space. The plays I examine depend on the audience’s familiarity with theatrical culture and practice in order to distinguish between sincere and insincere religious performance. By making the process of conversion a theatrical performance onstage, these plays could advocate for the theatrical medium as a genuine and effective catalyst for spiritual renewal.
