  • Nanny Pat S Adventures in Cornwall
Nanny Pat s Adventures in Cornwall When my grandchildren first arrived they all lived in Brighton. That made visiting them a 10 hour round trip in the car or a 9 hour train journey from Cornwall, which is a tall order when you have a busy full-time job! Family life is very important to me and I made it a priority to visit once a month and not be a remote ‘duty visit’ Nan but a full ‘hands on’ Nan who is a big part of their lives. I have a passion for the outdoors and luckily my sons and their families do too, so my visits to Brighton often entailed leaping on buses and trains and exploring the local area, including woods, parks and beaches, walking on the Downs and enjoying the many outdoor parades and festivals so common there. As I was free of work and domestic chores on these visits, I was able to devote myself entirely to my grandchildren, pushing buggies down to the beach, playing in the parks, having picnics galore, telling stories and indulging myself in their delightful company. This set a pattern and when my son Mark and his family relocated to Cornwall with two toddlers I set about having at least one adventure a week with them, usually on a Wednesday. These days became known as Nanny Pat’s Wednesdays. I tried to choose places which were suitable for their ages and catered for my needs with buggy friendly paths, good baby changing facilities, cafés with a children’s menu and were affordable (often free).

Well I hadn’t been there and so Mrs R and I decided to head in that direction this June. We stationed ourselves for three nights in the village of Cottingham. Cottingham had the advantage of having a railway station and being one stop away from Hull in one direction and Beverley in the other. We arrived on a Friday lunchtime and headed first towards Hull for a leisurely wander around Hull’s Old Town in the afternoon before catching a bus to the East side of town to watch Hull Kingston Rovers playing Rugby League against Huddersfield. Hull Old Town is close to the bus and train interchange and was a pleasant surprise with plenty of The Chequers Micropub, Beverley historic pubs in the Old Town’s lanes. It appears a lot of shopping has moved out to around the Paragon transport interchange, leaving the old of the town’s walls and up the hill to the racing.
