A thought or two from your captain…

I think the transition from last year to a brand new 2014 was done with a huge sigh of relief. Everyone feels that the start of a year immediately means new beginnings and brand new ideas to implement.

The Ladies Golf section has always tried to keep golf at the forefront and bring as much fun and adventure to our games as possible. Seeing that our course is looking the best ever after more than 700mm of rain this season, it is easy to keep on doing so. We are proud to be associated with such a prestigious and family friendly Club.

Our league matches have already kicked off, and thanks to our main sponsor VODACOM, we all look the part. We are the defending champions in Gauteng North this year, and we aim to make it through to the final once again. Remember, if we think we can do something, we most probably CAN!

Our Alma Chapman Ladies Open is around the corner and we would like to remind all our members and friends in Pretoria to diarise this event on 15 April with the theme “ ONLY IN !”

Since taking up corporate membership at PCC, ABI have now also joined our list of generous sponsors, and are in fact co-sponsoring our Monthly Medals, which are played on the first Saturday of each month. While we continue to have a morning and afternoon competition in each of the divisions, the player with the BEST score for the day, in both divisions receives a branded stand bag.

In fact Xander Swart and Tinus Maritz were the first winners of these bags when the sponsorship started late last year –but don’t worry, this deal is for a year, so everyone still has quite a few opportunities to win a bag. Good luck to you all and THANKS again to ABI for their generosity.

ell, obviously Pretoria Country Club is an extremely happy place Winner of the Jo’Burg Open Wafter George Coetzee’s win in the Jo’burg Open on 9 February 2014. Yes, we have all waited a long time for this win, but you can imagine how frustrated he must have been? But in the end it was fantastic that his first win happened here in South Africa in front of so many of his family and friends. Actually, I was working on Sunday but our course had been closed due to the huge storm the previous night, so there I sat alone in the shop watching the TV, and it was incredible to see so many club members following George. Mind you, as I watched I was in constant contact with Conor Cherer (many of you will remember Conor, an American diplomat who was a member at PCC until last year) in Manila, Mike Hurly in Philadelphia, Donald, my son, in Dallas. The comments were flying, “is he fitter or is it the colour of his clothes”? Etc etc. All the while everyone was extremely nervous with Donald saying “he wakes me up early to give me a thousand heart attacks” but in the end the best description of his performance was Monday’s Pretoria News placard which read “SA’s KING GEORGE REIGNS”. Yes, George, the reaction from everyone at the club has been amazing and we are all happy for you as well as proud of you. By: Athol Dowie

Issue 1 - 2014 | PRETORIA COUNTRY CLUB | 23 Bird Watching at PCC

Our first Bird Watching walk of the new year took place on Saturday morning the 1st of February 2014.

It was a pleasant morning but the overcast weather from the previous night’s thunderstorm was still around, and this did not seem ideal as the sun only came out a little later than normal.

Once started, it actually became pretty clear that our weather predictions were wrong, and the golf course was full of bird life even with the bad weather.

A total of 52 out of our 75 species were spotted and a wonderful scone breakfast and coffee was then prepared for all in the Bowls Pavilion.

It was a fun morning and enjoyed by all PCC Birders and a special thank you again to Bryan Groom from Bird-Life North Gauteng for the guided walk and his continued support of our Bird Watching Walks.

Hope to see you guys at the next one, which will probably be our last one for the summer as the colder temperatures will start the migration of some of the species.

Issue 1 - 2014 | PRETORIA COUNTRY CLUB | 26 Squash

From the Squash Courts:

It is that time of year again when we see lots of action at the squash club. The PCC Squash round robin was completed at the end of January with much interest especially as the men have acquired a 2nd Steven Doeg with team in the Northerns Squash Association’s Fares Dessouki (men’s 1st league for the 2014 season. This to go champion 2013) along with a 1st Reserve, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th league teams in the men’s leagues and our very powerful ladies side headed up by England professional Lauren Siddall.

The NSA runs a “Blitz League” as a season opener which was contested over two weeks of intense squash. Our ladies narrowly lost in the semi finals on a count- out; this can only but motivate them to achieve greater things in the winter season.

League is well underway and the teams are well placed after the first two matches.

Pretoria Country Club will once again be hosting the NSA Open, which is the first event on the South African Sunshine tour for professional squash players. This will Craig Ruane , Calvin take place at the Squash Courts from 6th Ziegler- Smith & April to Friday 11th April with the final Michael Clayton our matches. In 2013 we were proud to host budding your u/13 players from 14 international countries champions including, Japan, Cayman islands, Taiwan, Korea to go along with a number of players from England and Egypt. Not to forget many of our home grown nationals and club members.

The eventual winners were Fares Dessouki, who won the men’s in a titanic 3/2 battle over German no 2 Raphael Kandra. The ladies saw Siyoli Waters from SA no 1 outlasting New Zealander Kylie Lindsey in 3 straight games. The crowd was entertained before the main finals by two of our then u13 boys Michael Clayton and Calvin Ziegler-Smith in a curtain- raiser which went the way of Michael 3/2. These two ended up at the top of their age group (u13) in South Africa after the Junior Interprovincial tournament in June 2013.

All said, the event was a great success and Craig Ruane with thus the NSA will once again host this Siyoli Water (women’s prestigious event at the Pretoria Country champion 2013) Club. Please feel free to come and watch some top squash which by all accounts you will not get to witness too often right here on our doorstep. Each afternoon there will be a clinic held by some of the overseas professionals to give our youngsters some valuable pointers.

Happy Squashing

Issue 1 - 2014 | PRETORIA COUNTRY CLUB | 28 About Lindsay As an avid sportswoman throughout my school and university years, I represented national and provincial sports teams and always shared a true passion for fitness and health. I have spent hours and hours training – whether I was lifting weights at the gym, or at a power pump class, or on the hockey field, or in the swimming pool or running around the athletics track – I’ve pretty much done it all, and it’s safe to say I have my 10 000 hours (If you’ve read Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers” – you know what I’m talking about if not, just nod and smile). After studying Bcom LLB and Taxation Honours at the University of Pretoria, and tasting the corporate working world, I realised that my true hunger in life could not be further from the legal or taxation routes.

I am very fortunate that training and keeping fit have never felt like a burden for me. Quite the contrary – it has always been something that I love and enjoy. I realise however that not everyone shares this love and enjoyment for exercise.

Through all my various disciplines of training, I found that I look my best and feel my best when I love what I am doing, not when I am obsessing over calories, or committing to a gym programme that I hate. So I started FitFirst, where fitness meets fun, and results flow as a by-product, with the goal of helping others enjoy their training as much as I do and to stop focusing on the negative aspects of losing weight and spending hours in the gym.

By finding a solution to all the reasons that people give not to train, and combining them – FitFirst was born – offering training sessions that are convenient, effective and enjoyable.
