Tara Stud's Homecoming King
TUESDAY, 15 DECEMBER 2020 DEIRDRE TO VISIT GALILEO IN 2021 TARA STUD'S A new direction in the extraordinary odyssey of the Japanese HOMECOMING KING mare Deirdre (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}BReizend {Jpn, by Special Week {Jpn}) began on Monday when the 6-year-old left her adopted home of Newmarket to begin her stud career in Ireland. Her first mating is planned to be with Coolmore's champion sire Galileo (Ire). Bred by Northern Farm and raced by Toji Morita, Deirdre's first three seasons of racing were restricted largely to Japan, where she won five races, including the G1 Shuka Sho. She also took third in the G1 Dubai Turf on her first start outside her native country. Following her return visit to the Dubai World Cup meeting in 2019, Deirdre travelled on to Hong Kong and then to Newmarket, which has subsequently remained her base for an ambitious international campaign. Top Jockey, Trainers and Owner Awards up for Grabs at Royal Ascot
TOP JOCKEY, TRAINER AND OWNER AWARDS UP FOR GRABS AT ROYAL ASCOT 15th June 2020 Awards for leading jockey, trainer and owner will once again be distributed at this year’s Royal Ascot. Frankie Dettori claimed the QIPCO Leading Jockey Award at the Royal Meeting in 2019 with seven victories, thanks largely to a superb four-timer on day three. The 49-year-old looks set to have another excellent book of rides this year as he aims for a seventh title at the meeting. With Jamie Spencer sidelined through injury, Ryan Moore is the only other jockey riding this week to be previously crowned top jockey at Royal Ascot, having claimed the most recent of eight meeting titles in 2018. Due to the protective measures in place this week, there will be no transferable armband for the leading jockey throughout the meeting. Aidan O’Brien received the QIPCO Royal Ascot Leading Trainer Award for a 10th time in 2019 and looks to have his string in top form once again. Other previous winners who will be hoping to have a good week include Sir Michael Stoute, John Gosden, Mark Johnston and Saeed bin Suroor. Paul Cole, who was leading trainer at Royal Ascot in 1994, will aim to create history by becoming the first British-based trainer with a joint-licence to win at the meeting, having gone into partnership with his son Oliver at the start of the season. Simon and Ed Crisford, another father and son combination, will also be looking to saddle the ground-breaking first. -

14 Established 1961 Sports Monday, October 5, 2020 Photo of the day Eagle lifts England’s Reid to LPGA lead in New Jersey NEW YORK: Mel Reid fired an eagle and three birdies in a five-under par 66 on Saturday to seize a one-shot lead going into the final round of the LPGA ShopRite Classic. England’s Reid, who was one off the pace head- ing into the round, had 15-under par total at the Seaview resort in Galloway New Jersey, and was one in front of Americans Jennifer Song and Jennifer Kupcho, who both shot 65. It’s the second straight event that Reid, a six-time winner on the Ladies European Tour, has held the 54-hole lead in search of a first LPGA Tour title. She was two-up through three rounds in Portland but finished tied for fifth in a tournament won by com- patriot Georgia Hall in a playoff. “Another great opportunity this week to get it done,” Reid said. “Tomorrow I’m going to take my time a little bit more, and hopefully it will make a bit of a difference.” Reid put herself in position again with a quick start at Seaview, where she birdied the first and third. She was on the green in two at the par-five ninth and two-putted for birdie and a birdie at the 10th put her alone atop the leaderboard. “I knew it was always in me to do this,” Reid said. “I wasn’t sure how to get there. It has just taken me a lot more years than I expected it to.” Kupcho and Song both birdied the par-five 18th to close the gap. -
