Intro to Archery
INTRODUCTION TO ARCHERY TARGET ARCHERY This the most commonly practiced form of archery worldwide and is practiced within most Archery Australia clubs. Target tournaments are conducted regularly and held both indoors and outdoors. Shooting distances vary from 18 metres (indoor) to 90 metres (outdoor), with target sizes being 40 or 60 centimetres for indoors and either 80 or 122 centimetres for outdoors. Targets have five colours with each colour being divided into 2 to provide 10 scoring zones. The innermost ring is given a value of 10 points, down to the outermost ring with a value of 1 point. Target rounds involve shooting a set number of arrows over one or several distances. Indoor events involve shooting a total of either 30 or 60 arrows; with outdoor events shooting 72, 90, 120 or 144 arrows are shot. FIELD ARCHERY Field archery is a challenging outdoor discipline in which the archer takes on the terrain as well as the target. Field archery is a combination of archery, golf, and bush walking. A course is set up in a bush land setting taking advantage of hills, slopes, angles and light and shade. A field course is made up of either 24 or 28 targets depending on the round being shot. The archer is required to shoot either three or four arrows at each target. Distances range from 10 to 60 metres and target face sizes vary from 20 to 80 centimetres. CLOUT ARCHERY Clout archery is another popular discipline in Australia because due to its fun aspect. Clout archery is derived from medieval warfare where archers would lob arrows onto the advancing army. -

I have organized these design considerations into four principles that archery clubs and land planners can utilize. Observing sensitivity to the environment, providing a layout for safe shooting, making the space comfortable, and programming inclusive spaces makes a range that serves its community well. These principles are to explain concisely how a range can be made not only to accommodate archers but also to exist harmoniously with neighboring land as well as function as a valuable community building asset. The Design of the Bow 1 B.W. Kooi Abstract The invention of the bow and arrow probably ranks for social impact with the inven- tion of the art of kindling a ¯re and the invention of the wheel. It must have been in prehistoric times that the ¯rst missile was launched with a bow, we do not know where and when. The event may well have occurred in di®erent parts of the world at about the same time or at widely di®ering times. Numerous kinds of bows are known, they may have long limbs or short limbs, upper and lower limbs may be equal or unequal in length whilst cross-sections of the limbs may take various shapes. Wood or steel may be used, singly as in `self' bows, or mixed when di®erent layers are glued together. There are `composite' bows with layers of several kinds of organic material, wood, sinew and horn, and, in modern forms, layers of wood and synthetic plastics reinforced with glass¯bre or carbon. The shape of the bow when relaxed, may be straight or recurved, where the curvature of the parts of the limbs of the unstrung bow is opposite to the way they are flexed to ¯t the string. In previous papers we have dealt with the mechanics of the bow and arrow. The main subject of this paper is the design and construction of bows. Nondimension- alization of the problem leads to the introduction of the maximum elastic energy storage capacity per unit of mass as a material constant for strength.
