From its first development until the 1500s, the bow was man's constant companion and has been the most widely used of all weapons in recorded history. The bow allowed the prehistoric human to become the most efficient hunter on earth, providing him safety, food and raw materials such as bone, sinew and hide. From that time on, archery has played an important role in many of the world's civilizations. Starting with the reign of William the Conqueror, the bow was England's principal weapon of national defense for several centuries. Around the year 1200, Genghis Khan and his Mongol hordes conquered much of the known world employing short, powerful bows. For Native Americans, archery was the means of subsistence and existence during the days of English and later American colonization. Finally, after the bow's replacement by firearms as a weapon of war, archery became a favored sport, thus securing its continuous practice throughout history. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, archery's importance as a cultural advance ranks with the development of speed and the art of making fire. The use of the bow appears in folklore from over 3000 years ago, although its invention predates that era. The development of archery followed a course of key innovations by many historical cultures. About 3500 BC., Egyptians were using bows as tall as themselves. -

02 December, 2016 ODFW Commission meeting December 02, 2016 RE: Public Testimony, 2017 Big Game Regulations User group growth, Traditional Archery Chair Finley, Members of the Commission, Director Melcher, for the record, my name is Carson Brown, Secretary, TRADITIONAL ARCHERS OF OREGON (TAO). TAO continues to invest in activities where we promote and instruct traditional equipment usage for people having strong interest in shooting the long bow and recurve bow. As illustrated through TAO’s sponsorship of the OREGON ARCHERY HERITAGE MUSEUM, Oregon’s incredibly rich bowhunting heritage rivals that of any state in the United States. One of the original purposes for forming TAO was to ensure traditional equipment was not forgotten with the proliferation of modern archery - that was 1984. Over the years, you have graciously listened to our previous testimonies where TAO has related how continued adoption of mechanical and technological improvements have greatly increased advantage to the hunter and the overriding concern of our membership being continued loss of opportunity in the field. Today I am providing testimony on behalf of a TAO committee charged with the objective to further the role of Traditional Archery as a management tool that would provide opportunity while minimizing resource impact. The committee members are experienced archery hunters, with knowledge of big game regulations and Oregon archery history. The major objectives outlined by the committee: 1) Recognize and grow traditional archers as a user group and that our choice in equipment provides more opportunity with less resource impact. 2) To support that notion, add archery tackle details to the MANDATORY HUNTER REPORTING SYSTEM (DO YOU USE: ☐ COMPOUND BOW or ☐RECURVE/LONG BOW?). -
Intro to Archery
INTRODUCTION TO ARCHERY TARGET ARCHERY This the most commonly practiced form of archery worldwide and is practiced within most Archery Australia clubs. Target tournaments are conducted regularly and held both indoors and outdoors. Shooting distances vary from 18 metres (indoor) to 90 metres (outdoor), with target sizes being 40 or 60 centimetres for indoors and either 80 or 122 centimetres for outdoors. Targets have five colours with each colour being divided into 2 to provide 10 scoring zones. The innermost ring is given a value of 10 points, down to the outermost ring with a value of 1 point. Target rounds involve shooting a set number of arrows over one or several distances. Indoor events involve shooting a total of either 30 or 60 arrows; with outdoor events shooting 72, 90, 120 or 144 arrows are shot. FIELD ARCHERY Field archery is a challenging outdoor discipline in which the archer takes on the terrain as well as the target. Field archery is a combination of archery, golf, and bush walking. A course is set up in a bush land setting taking advantage of hills, slopes, angles and light and shade. A field course is made up of either 24 or 28 targets depending on the round being shot. The archer is required to shoot either three or four arrows at each target. Distances range from 10 to 60 metres and target face sizes vary from 20 to 80 centimetres. CLOUT ARCHERY Clout archery is another popular discipline in Australia because due to its fun aspect. Clout archery is derived from medieval warfare where archers would lob arrows onto the advancing army. -

The Japanese Arrow By Godai Katsunaga Intorduction The Ya, or arrow of Japan and was between 34 and 38 inches in length, made of fire hardened bamboo shafts and had a steel arrow head., During this period and earlier arrows used in combat were often marked to identify who owned them, this allowed samurai to get the proper credit for killing an opponent. Period Construction The bamboo used for the arrow shafts is Pseudosasa japonica or commonly called Japanese arrow bamboo. This bamboo grows in slender culms that are packed tightly together, forming a dense hedge, with large, dark green foliage. It is a tough and versatile bamboo that will thrive in shade and in sun while growing to about 15 foot tall and was common throughout Japan. Farmers and other workers harvested the bamboo in the early winter when the plants saps were down. To get the required diameter need to make arrows the plants that were between two and three years in age were preferred. After harvesting, the best bamboo was hand selected and ideally stored for about a year for drying, allowing most of the moisture in the plant material to evaporate. Preparation of each shaft included having the nodes shaved off and then softening the shaft by placing it in hot sand prior to straightening it by hand. After the shafts were straightened, they were exposed to high heat to remove any remaining moisture and harden the natural sugars, creating a stronger bond of the natural fibers; this was known as fire hardening. Fletching was done with hawk, eagle, crane or pheasant tail feathers and could be either three or four flights depending on the arrow head that would be mounted. -
