September 2011 World Archery Newsletter Page 3 On the men’s side, it all came down to the last match between the Americans Rodger WILLETT Jr and Reo WILDE! WILLETT won the first three stages. However, WILDE came back very close thanks to his magnificent victory in Shanghai. In the Istanbul, both archers won their quarterfinal and semifinals to reach the gold medal match. Trailing by four 10s, WILDE still had the chance to catch WILLETT on the finish line for the World Cup title and the Longines Prize. But WILLETT won the gold final 143-141 (adding 9 more 10s out of 15 arrows for a total of 424 tens) to show he was the true champion of the season! On the women’s side, it was a close race between Erika ANSCHUTZ (USA), Laura LONGO (ITA), Albina LOGINOVA (RUS) and Christie COLIN (USA). LONGO arrived in Istanbul with the smallest lead over ANSCHUTZ (276 to 275), while LOGINOVA had 262 and COLIN 255. With her losses in quarterfinals in Istanbul LONGO and LOGINOVA stopped contending for the Prize. ANSCHUTZ and COLIN went all the way to the gold final, but the latter trailed her teammate by too many 10s. At the end ANSHCHUTZ showed that she was best compound women archer of the year with a victory 142-138. She won Stage 1 in Porec, ranked 2nd in Ogden and Shanghai, won the Final in Istanbul and the Longines Prize for Precision with 304 tens for the season! Management Seminar Invitation In line with the World Archery World Plan 2007-2012, the next stage of the plan and with the aim of empowering their Member Associations (MAs), World Archery will hold a Management Seminar on 18-20 November 2011 in Lausanne, Switzerland. This seminar is aimed at MAs' chief executives, mainly General Secretaries, CEO's and/or Presidents depending on the size and structure of the federation. The objective of the seminar is to strengthen the networking between MAs by sharing successful stories and concrete projects that can be replicated in other countries in order to increase management efficiency. This is also the start for the World Archery Plan 2012-2017 to deliver assistance to MAs and to transfer knowledge and experience between members. The complete invitation letter and registration form are available on www.worldarchery.org , section World Archery > News > Archives > 2011 > 5 September 2011. Member Associations Great Britain As the Olympic sport with the richest of history, it was appropriate that Britain's Parliament was host of an archery tournament. This event took place on the Speakers' Green on Monday, 5 September 2011. It was one of the events being staged to mark Archery GB's 150th anniversary. The Commonwealth Games double gold medallist Nicky HUNT was there to give some expert advice to several adversaries. Among the rivalries were the Culture Secretary Jeremy HUNT MP, and his Parliamentary Shadow, Ivan LEWIS MP, and other Members of Parliament who went along to have a go at one of the country's fastest growing sports. The event was organised by Huw IRRANCA-DAVIES MP, the Parliamentary sponsor for archery in the countdown to next year's London Olympic Games. An enthusiastic sportsman, Mr IRRANCA- DAVIES is no new convert to archery—he has been involved in the sport for many years, particularly since the establishment of groups in his constituency, and is now looking forward to making Parliamentary history. September 2011 World Archery Newsletter Page 4 Archery now has over 30 thousand regular participants throughout the UK, and with the sports' profile rising in the countdown to London 2012, new recruits to the sport are turning up. Only recently, archery came out on top in an AXA sponsored opinion poll of young people throughout the country when asked about the Olympic sport they would most like to take up if given the chance. The Sports Minister Mr Didier APLOGAN came to support the archers the afternoon of Friday, 9. The archers competed at the Friendship stadium in recurve bow at 70m, standard bow at 30m and bamboo bow at 25m. From each distance, the archers shot two times 36 arrows. Just like in major international tournaments, the finals were shot in an attractive venue: the Fidjrosse beach. The qualified archers shot head-to-head matches.
