On the men’s side, it all came down to the last match between the Americans Rodger WILLETT Jr and Reo WILDE! WILLETT won the first three stages. However, WILDE came back very close thanks to his magnificent victory in Shanghai. In the Istanbul, both archers won their quarterfinal and semifinals to reach the gold medal match. Trailing by four 10s, WILDE still had the chance to catch WILLETT on the finish line for the World Cup title and the Longines Prize. Great Britain As the Olympic sport with the richest of history, it was appropriate that Britain's Parliament was host of an archery tournament. This event took place on the Speakers' Green on Monday, 5 September 2011. It was one of the events being staged to mark Archery GB's 150th anniversary.

The Commonwealth Games double gold medallist Nicky HUNT was there to give some expert advice to several adversaries. Among the rivalries were the Culture Secretary Jeremy HUNT MP, and his Parliamentary Shadow, Ivan LEWIS MP, and other Members of Parliament who went along to have a go at one of the country's fastest growing sports.

The event was organised by Huw IRRANCA-DAVIES MP, the Parliamentary sponsor for archery in the countdown to next year's . An enthusiastic sportsman, Mr IRRANCA- DAVIES is no new convert to archery—he has been involved in the sport for many years, particularly since the establishment of groups in his constituency, and is now looking forward to making Parliamentary history.

Archery now has over 30 thousand regular participants throughout the UK, and with the sports' profile rising in the countdown to London 2012, new recruits to the sport are turning up.

Only recently, archery came out on top in an AXA sponsored opinion poll of young people throughout the country when asked about the Olympic sport they would most like to take up if given the chance.

TIZOCATA Tournament in Benin From 8-11 September, the 3rd edition of the "Tournoi International des Zones Centre et Ouest Afrique de Tir à l’Arc" (TIZOCATA) was held in Cotonou (Benin) under the projectors of media and honoured by several VIPs.

The Opening Ceremony was chaired by the Director of the cabinet of the Sports Minister on Thursday, 8 September. The Sports Minister Mr Didier APLOGAN came to support the archers the afternoon of Friday, 9.

The archers competed at the Friendship stadium in recurve bow at 70m, standard bow at 30m and bamboo bow at 25m. From each distance, the archers shot two times 36 arrows. Just like in major international tournaments, the finals were shot in an attractive venue: the Fidjrosse beach. The qualified archers shot head-to-head matches.

Medal Ranking: Rank Country Gold Silver Bronze 1st BENIN 7 5 4 2nd R.D.CONGO 1 3rd TOGO 1 1 4th NIGER 1

In this third edition, there were two new participating countries: the Democratic Republic of Congo and Niger. As usual in this tournament, there was a competition between the new countries to encourage their participation. They shot at 30m with standard bows, and the DR Congo beat Niger.

On the following Wednesday, the Ambassador of the DR Congo officially received the gold medal winner at the embassy, in the presence of the archery federation members, the Beninese archers as well as the Congolese Community in Benin and the press. The President of the Union offered him the World Archery symbol and other gifts from FEBETA.

The success of this tournament pleases the "Fondation Internationale de Développement du Tir à l’Arc" (FIDTA), which sponsored this project. For more information: www.febeta.org

MEAC Activities

Training Camp for Bhutanese Archers & Coaches Course for Tonga From 8 September 2011 until 15 May 2012, Bhutanese archers are preparing for the London 2012 Olympic Games at the World Archery MEAC Centre with Coach MUN Baek Woon. The two archers are benefiting of the Olympic Solidarity athletes scholarship programme and are the first scholarship holders to train at the MEAC centre as part of the Olympic Games London 2012 preparation programme.

World Archery and Olympic Solidarity (OS) signed a partnership agreement to train archers in view of the Olympic preparation programme. This programme is for those countries that do not have proper training facilities and structures.

From 11 September until 11 October 2011, Sifa Moala TAUMOPEAU from Tonga is following an archery specific coaching programme with Coach MUN Baek Woon. He benefited of OS Coaches Scholarship for a 4-week period at the MEAC. His coaching programme is based on the analysis of the archers’ performances, to identify what to change in order to improve their shooting performance and scores. This will allow them to achieve better results, but also improve his coaching level and archery knowledge. Coach MUN says "It’s a great opportunity for Sifa to benefit of this scholarship, since he can put in practice theoretical sessions and assist me directly with the Bhutanese archers training at the MEAC."

We wish them all the best of luck! We also hope that the programme followed by Sifa Moala TAUMOPEAU will contribute to the development of archery in Tonga.

We would like to thank the OS as well as the National Olympic Committees of Bhutan and Tonga for their contribution to the development of our sport.

Para-Archery

Stoke Mandeville Open The Stoke Mandeville Open, Para-Archery World Ranking Event, was held in Stoke Mandeville, United Kingdom from 6-9 September 2011. The number of archers was so great (174) that the Organising Committee had to split the divisions into three separate sessions.

Qualifications took place on Tuesday, 6 September, followed by Eliminations on Wednesday, 7 September. The third day of competition was devoted to the Paralympic Quota Places Tournament. The team events and individual medal matches of the Stoke Mandeville Open took place on Friday.

Gold medals were shared out among eight countries on Friday, 9 September 2011. There were winners from seven countries in seven different individual finals, while three archers ended the day with two medals, thanks to the team tournaments.

The Italian Vittorio BARTOLI won the recurve men W2 gold, beating YOU In Sik of Korea in the final. BARTOLI later won a team silver, as finished runners-up to .

Another double medal winner was Poland's Milena OLSZEWSKA, who beat Eliane SALDEN-OTTEN of the in the recurve women standing final. OLSZEWSKA was then a member of the Polish trio that finished runner-up to host nation Great Britain in the team event.

Paralympic Quota Places Tournament On Thursday, 8 September at the Stoke Mandeville Open a Paralympic qualification tournament was held in order to award quota places for the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

In total there were 68 places at stake over seven categories for both men and women. The greatest number was for the compound men open with 22 places, then the recurve men W1/W2 with 11 places. All other categories had seven places each.

Because of the need to rank archers well beyond the number of places available, in case any Paralympic National Committees refused their places, a series of mini tournaments took place as the losers of each group as well as the winners shot more matches. For the compound men open this meant ranking people through to 25-32 places.

September 2011 World Archery Newsletter Page 8

There were many close matches with a number of ties, so keen were the archers to win places for their country. At least two matches went to a second shoot-off after the first tie-break arrow was too close to call. All results available at http://www.ianseo.net/Details.php?toId=186

INTERPRETATIONS WORLD ARCHERY CONSTITUTION AND RULES

Book 2, Chapter 7, Article 7.3.1.5 Book 3, Chapter 8, Article 8.3.1.5 Book 4, Chapter 9, Article 9.3.5.1 Archery Inc. has requested an interpretation on whether the bow sight pictured below is legal in the Recurve Division.

The Constitution and Rules Committee (“C&R”) finds the question presented to be within the terms of reference of the Technical Committee.

C&R has determined that the following interpretation is not contrary to the existing rules or Congress decisions.

Response from the Technical Committee:

It is the majority opinion of the Technical Committee that the sight pin submitted by Archery Australia, (see photo) is not legal for competition in the Recurve Division. The Technical Committee feels that the sight as currently designed violates rules 7.3.1.5 and 7.3.1.5.1, Book 2.
