ARCHERY ASSOCIATION OF

R E P O R T OF

THE SECRETARY GENERAL

for the period

16th February, 2008 to 30th June, 2009

Dear friends,

At the outset, it gives me immense pleasure in welcoming you all to this meeting being held today. I feel privileged to present my report in the capacity of Secretary General before this August House covering the period 16th February, 2008 to 30th June, 2009. Copies of Minutes of the last General Council Meeting of the AAI held on 16th February, 2008 at Delhi are placed for approval as Annexure (A)

The Report is presented to you as a summary of the important events, developments and significant progress AAI has made as an organization during the period under consideration. I am sure you will enjoy reading. Upon reviewing the period, it was very important for AAI as we formulated our Strategic Plan and then began the important step outlined in our plan.

The period of the report has been a very exciting and most successful in terms of achievements attained. I remember those initial days when was confined to the East and the North East part of India. States like , Manipur, Meghalaya, Bihar, Delhi and used to hog all the limelight. But today archery has spread all over the country. Actually, Indian archery has seen a resurgence on two occasions; first from 1989 to 1992, often called the ‘Limba Ram period’, and then from 2003 to now, when new generation, namely , Jayanta Talukdar, Rahul Banerjee, Mangal Singh, Satyadev Prasad, Viswash, Prabhat Kandir, Ravindhar, Palton in men section and Dola Banejeree, Reena Kumari, Chekrovolu, Bomabyla Devi, Pranitha, Jhanu Hansdah, Bheigyabati Chanu, Sakro Besra, Manjudha Soy in women have unveiled their talent. Significantly, the current rise of Indian archery hold out more promise than the olden reign, simply because the country has good archers in greater number. In short, its quality supply base is wider for which I appreciate the role played by Tata Archery Academy –Jamshedpur; Army Sports Institute- Pune; Gurukul Prabhat Ashram- Meerut and Mittal Champions Trust- Mumbai, Sports Authority of India and our active member associations of course. The entire world is observing with curiosity towards India’ surge, as it figures among the top two countries now.

I strongly believe that everyone involved in our family will be making archery stronger and more successful. I am sure that whole Archery fraternity includes Presidents & Secretaries of State Associations/Units, Executive Council Members, Coaches, Officials and above all “Archers” be our comrades in accomplishing AAI motto – ‘Adventure of Excellence’, and we shall surely succeed.

Through this report, I wish to congratulate our Senior and Junior Archers both men and women and their respective Coaches for their enormous efforts to make India proud. Meantime, I call upon our Archers and Coaches to put all-out efforts to develop a strong winner’s instinct in the days to come. However, further progress is only possible by becoming more and more focused on quality and setting clear priorities.

Let’s have a look at AAI activities during the period of report step-by-step :-

They stood at 6th position.

:: 4 ::

RECURVE MEN

The effort of Tarundeep Rai (ranked 4th) and Mangal Singh Champia (ranked 6th) was creditable. Before loosing semi-final, Tarundeep ousted four opponents of different countries. Unluckily, he returned home empty-handled when he missed Bronze Medal Match whereas Mangal Singh lost at ¼. Jayanta Talukdar and Rahul Banerjee could register only one win in their name. After entering into quarter final through bye system, Recurve Men team had a success in defeating comparatively strong team of (224 Vs 209) in a pre-quarter final to face in Semi Final but failed to win over Australia (217 Vs 211). In a very tense and tight Bronze Medal match, India shot 209 as compared to 213 points and went down to Italy by 4 points. Indian team ranked 4th.

Exhibiting killer spirit in 1/8 and ¼ rounds, Men’s Team clinched victory from (224 Vs 212) and from Ukrain (226 Vs 219) but lost to Italy in nail biting semi final scoring 225 against 226. The bronze Medal match was shot between India and France. Indian Trio - Rahul, Jayanta, Mangal Singh has gained their form back and bagged Bronze Medal with 7 points advantage over their rival, France (220 Vs 213).

COMPOUND WOMEN

In Compound Women segment, Jhanu Hansdah deserves appreciation for her admirable performance in first three elimination rounds. However, her rhythm was distbured in ¼ match and ultimately ranked 8th in the world. Vrushali Gorle, Namita Yadav and Bhageiyabati Chanu started nice by defeating Spain (214 Vs 205) at 1/8 but lost to Great Britain in quarter-final (222 Vs 210).

COMPOUND MEN

Same like 1st World Cup, the performance of Compound Men Archers was very dismal. Baban Kumar was the only one who got success to qualify for elimination round. Considering poor ranking in qualification round, team was also not allowed to compete in team elimination.

g) 10th Junior & 4th Cadet World Outdoor Target Archery Championships

It is a matter of contentment that Junior and Cadet (Recurve and Compound) in both boys and girls sections have shown good results in the World Championships. Besides medal winning performance by Recurve Junior Women, Archers belong to Recurve Cadet Men and Compound Cadet Women Archers performed well but unfortunately failed to convert their wins into Medals. True can not be denied that our team grabbed two medals which is definitely behind the performance of 2006-Junior & Cadet World where they had established a landmark by winning five medals. But the achievements attained by them have more value at a time when the AAI is preparing our team for the next Junior and Cadet World Championships to be held at 2009-Ogden (USA) and the maiden 2010- Youth Olympic Games-Singapore. The following points highlight the results achieved during World Championships : -

2) The Indian Recurve Junior Women team of Pranitha Vardhineni, Rimil Biruly and Belsri Narzary bagged Silver Medal.

3) Recurve Cadet Men Archer, Hemanta Basumatary missed the Bronze Medal narrowly and ranked 4th in the overall Olympic Round. They were 2nd in FITA qualification round scoring a remarkable score of 3949 points.

6) The performance of Rimil Biruly ( Recurve Junior women), Namita Yadav (Compound Junior Women), K.Nikkon (Compound Junior Men), Antanu Dass & Rajgovind Swansi (Recurve Cadet Men) was noteworthy. These archers have impressed a lot with their attempt in World Championship.

Continuing the superb form at the 1st Stage of the World Cup-Santo Domingo where they clinched Gold from Britain team, Men Recurve Team successeded to maintain their supremacy giving exceptionally well performance in the final. Jayanta Taluker winner of maiden World Cup Event 2006 has created farora by his memorable “CHAMPIONS’ TITLE” winning performance. In the finals, he defeated 2004-Athens Olympic Champion Marco Galiazzo of Italy making 110 points Vs 108. These two archers have met twice, once in 2006 and then in 2008. Both matches were played in Porec and Talukdar won both of them. Performance details of Indian Archers are attached as Annexure (B-IX) :: 12 ::

j) 2nd Asian Archery Grand Prix Tournament

It is felt that the standard of top 8 archers selected in Recurve/Compound(men and women) is almost the same and inspite of having enough potential and talent, archers ranked 5 to 8 do not find any opportunity to participate in international competitions.
