And thats just the beginning, as Loki takes on Lorelei in Monte Carlos casinos, and heads back to the dawn of Asgard to join its greatest heroes on a quest for a certain magical sword! But when Loki puts together a crew to crack the deepest dungeons of Asgardia itself, there may be one plot twist too many for even Loki to handle!COLLECTING: LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD 1-5, ALL-NEW MARVEL NOW! POINT ONE (LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD STORY) With his wild popularity in the Marvel film universe (yeah, I’m in Loki’s Army), it wasnt a surprise that Marvel’s publishing arm would try to capitalize on the character. The tricky part was how to center a comic series on the “bad guy” without selling the character out. Loki himself said it best: “I’m not evil. I’m complicated.” (Amazing Spider-Man 503).Loki is certainly Thor’s nemesis, but over the course of comic history he has sided with the heroes on more than one occasion when it was in his best interests. After being reincarnated as a child in Journey into Mystery, Gillen aged Loki up to the twenty-something star of his own series. He’s working for the All-Mothers of Asgard in exchange for having sins wiped from his history. Though one sin can’t be so easily wiped - this Loki murdered his younger self to take his place. That bit of darkness hangs over what are other-wise snarky and light-hearted stories. He saves Thor from an evil that is poisoning him (and just what that poison is blew me away!); he meets a girl, while speed-dating no less, who can see through any lie; he sings to himself in the shower. This Loki is fun, clever, and doesnt take anything too seriously. Just what you’d imagine the Trickster we know would have been like as a teenager. What I liked best about the series is that, even though the stories appear light weight, there are some clever, deep threads woven through that really make Loki shine. He’s not a hero and his greatest enemy has always been himself. This isnt the film Loki, but it is definitely Loki. Will he go back to the dark side? Has he always been there? I can’t wait to see how these questions get answered. Highly recommended! As deadly as she is beautiful, she takes from evildoers the one thing for which they no longer have a use: their souls. And now she’s ready to face her greatest challenge: the graphic novel market! LORELEI: SECTS AND THE CITY (ISBN: 978-0-9841741-3-3) is a Mature Readers graphic novel written by bestselling author Steven A. Roman (X-Men: The Chaos Engine Trilogy, The Saga of Pandora Zwieback), with art by Eliseu Gouveia (The Phantom, Infiniteens), Steve Geiger (Web of Spider-Man, Incredible Hulk), and Neil Vokes (Flesh and Blood, The Black Forest). Its heroine is a former photographer who, through supernatural means, has been transformed into a succubus: a sexual demon who steals the souls of evildoers. In this adventure, Lori must prevent an ancient cult from opening a gateway that will allow the monstrous Old Gods they worship to return—and possibly destroy the Earth. “At its heart, Lorelei is a tribute to 1970s and ’80s horror comics and movies,” Roman explained. “Her stories have supernatural elements, sure, and there’s some nudity and adult themes—Lori is a succubus, after all—but her adventures are character-driven, with a heavy dose of sarcasm and humor.

Also, I would like to thank my two committee members who agreed to help me realize my education goals by exploring comic book studies, Dr. Timothy Murphy and Dr. Seth Perlow. My appreciation also extends to Dr. Toby Beauchamp, formerly at Oklahoma State University, who encouraged me to explore a topic I loved. iii Acknowledgements reflect the views of the author and are not endorsed by committee members or Oklahoma State University. Name: KATHLEEN NICOLE HUNT Date of Degree: MAY 2015 Title of Study: THE COMIC BOOK VILLAIN’S BODY: DEVIANT SEXUALITY AND GENDER-TRANSGRESSION Major Field: M.A. LITERATURE Abstract: Oftentimes, superheroes are recognized in the fields of visual rhetoric, popular culture, and literature as means for persuading and influencing masculine identity. With the explosive popularity of comic books and the presence of them in varying media, comic books necessitate the exploration and investigation in regards to how they affect a mass consumerist audience and society. Despite this newfound attention to comic books as viable scholarly material, supervillains remain largely dismissed from the academic discourse regarding their influence on gender and sexuality under the umbrella of masculine identity and performance.

  • Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances by Bob Wolniak
Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances By Bob Wolniak ased initially on the Bob Fronczak list from Avengers Assemble and Avengers Forever websites. But unlike Mr. B Fronczak’s list (that stops about the time of Heroes Reborn) this is NOT an attempt at a Marvel continuity (harmony of Marvel titles in time within the fictional universe), but Avengers appearances in order in approx. real world release order . I define Avengers appearances as team appearances, not individual Avengers or even in some cases where several individual Avengers are together (but eventually a judgment call has to be made on some of those instances). I have included some non-Avengers appearances since they are important to a key storyline that does tie to the Avengers, but noted if they did not have a team appearance. Blue (purple for WCA & Ultimates) indicates an Avengers title , whether ongoing or limited series. I have decided that Force Works is not strictly an Avengers title, nor is Thunderbolts, Defenders or even Vision/Scarlet Witch mini- series, although each book correlates, crosses over and frequently contains guest appearances of the Avengers as a team. In those cases, the individual issues are listed. I have also decided that individual Avengers’ ongoing or limited series books are not Avengers team appearances, so I have no interest in the tedious tracking of every Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or Hank Pym title unless they contain a team appearance or x-over . The same applies to Avengers Spotlight (largely a Hawkeye series, with other individual appearances), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Hulk, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thunderstrike, War Machine, Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, Hercules, and other such books or limited series.

  • This Is the Story of LOKI. Loki, Who, Born Again, Sought to Erase The
This is the story of LOKI. Loki, who, born again, sought to erase the misdeeds of the past, who sought to change. In spite of his attempts to change, though, he had a powerful combatant in the Loki of the future, whose sole endeavor was to ensure his dark reality would come to pass by trapping his younger self in it. In his travels, Loki came across mystic sisters AMORA THE ENCHANTRESS and the sorceress LORELEI, whose quarrels only intensified as Amora renounced her evil ways. Meanwhile, Lorelei, along with her Asgardian man-of-the-moment SIGURD, strayed from the straight and narrow onto the path of bank robbery. Stories such as these are rarely solitary moments. They resonate across other tales of good and evil, alongside heroes and monsters, martyrs and gods— and this story is no different. As THOR fell from grace, Loki was transformed into a warrior for the side of right, a hero for the ages. As a battle—the likes of which has never been seen in the Nine Realms—was on the precipice of erupting, Loki found himself against his brother, thrust into the role of champion of all things noble, the uncertain but willing… …Agent of Axis. • Reading the Uncanny Xmen: Gender, Race, and The
READING THE UNCANNY XMEN: GENDER, RACE, AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies 2011 ABSTRACT READING THE UNCANNY XMEN: GENDER RACE AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski The first superhero comic book was published in 1938 and since that time the genre has become a staple of American popular culture. While superhero stories have been adapted into every popular storytelling medium, the genre is most closely associated with the comic book industry. This dissertation examines the first 500 issues of The Uncanny XMen, one of the most popular series to be published in America. In particular, the portrayals of race and gender will be analyzed by performing a close reading of the stories published as well as a numerical analysis of the ethnicity, nationality, and gender of the heroes, villains, and guest stars who appear in the series. The X‐Men comic book franchise has a reputation among fans, creators, and scholars as one of the most diverse and progressive superhero comic book titles. The core conceit of the series, that there are people called mutants who are born with powers and abilities that separate them from normal humans, has allowed the themes of societal prejudice and hatred to be explored in a metaphorical fashion, though looking closely at the race and gender of the characters in the series reveals a different reality than the common perception of the series.

  • Mark Hibbett in Search of Doom. Tracking a Wandering Character
Mark Hibbett In Search of Doom. Tracking a Wandering Character Through Data Abstract This paper will describe the process of generating a corpus of comics for an examination of the transmedial development of the character Doctor Doom during the period known as ›The Marvel Age‹. It will briefly define what ›The Marvel Age‹ means in these terms, and describe the rationale for choosing which items should be included in the corpus. It will then go into some detail about the use of online comics databases, notably The Grand Comics Data- base, and describe the many difficulties inherent in the use of a dataset that has been collaboratively generated over a long period of time without clear editorial guidance, and suggest data-cleaning methods by which these issues can be mitigated. Finally, it will discuss how this corpus will be used in future to analyse the progress of Doctor Doom’s characterisation through this period. 1. Introduction Ever since he was created in The Fantastic Four #5 (1962) Doctor Doom has been a recurring character in every aspect of Marvel’s transmedia universes. He has been the main villain in all four live action Fantastic Four films, including the unreleased Roger Corman movie (1994), featured in almost every Marvel cartoon series from The Marvel Superheroes (1966) to the current Avengers Assemble (2013), and has appeared in video games, trading cards, toy ranges, and even hip-hop tracks. In the core Marvel comics universe he has appeared in over a hundred separate series, but until the recent Infamous Iron Man series IMAGE | Issue 29 | Special Issue Recontextualizing Characters | 01/2019 81 Mark Hibbett: In Search of Doom (2016), he has only ever headlined one, short-lived, ongoing series of his own, set in the ›Marvel 2099‹ universe (2013).
