Next week: November 3rd Saints have an unshakeable commitment to follow Jesus. Are we prepared to do the same?

We extend our sympathies to Rev. Teresa Burnett-Cole and family on the passing of her Uncle. Teresa will be away from the office on Thursday and Friday.

ASSISTANCE PLEASE Hilda is now home and has a walker. She has many exercises to do which includes a walk outside, everyday. It is a short walk but she needs someone to accompany her. You are welcome to stay and have tea after the walk. Hilda would prefer this to happen in the afternoon. If you have the time to help out, please contact Hilda (613-234-8929) or Adele MacLeod (613-216-7519).

Saturday October 26th……… Fall clean-up Saturday Yes from 9:30am to noon we will once again move nicely into late fall and early winter. We have the regular projects to do and with around 12 of us it can happen during the morning. Tube steaks will be served just before noon.

The launch event for my third novel, Carbon Copy: A Frances McFadden Mystery will take place on Sunday, October 27th at 7:00 pm at Glebe-St. James United Church (650 Lyon Street at First Avenue).

Many characters familiar to readers of The Underling (2012) and The Incrementalist (2016) re-appear, however, there is a fiction genre shift from history to mystery.

Frances McFadden, personal secretary to Bank of Canada Governor Graham Towers, is summoned before a military intelligence tribunal in February 1942, where she is accused of espionage and treason. Her claims of innocence fall on deaf ears, so she gets drawn down a rabbit hole of deception and death trying to solve the puzzle.

All are welcome to the launch. Cookies will be served. Books can be purchased for $25 cash or cheque.

If pressing affairs of state have you otherwise engaged on the 27th, Carbon Copy will be available in independent book stores in by October 21st and in electronic format and POD (print on demand) from Amazon in early November.

FRIENDLY CALLERS! Over the next few weeks, -St James Friendly Callers will be phoning everyone in the current Glebe-St James directory. This will be to confirm that we have up-to-date information. But at least as important is staying in touch with members of the Glebe-St James community and to let you know about what is happening.

Do you have questions? Feedback? Would you like a visit from a member of our pastoral care team or one of our ministers? Would you like to get more involved? These are all things you can discuss with the Friendly Callers!

If you do not wish to be called, or would like to schedule a call, please get in touch with Jennifer Reid at (613) 236-0617 ext. 21 or at [email protected]

Looking for Friendly Callers We have a dedicated team of Friendly Callers, but there is room for more! If you would like to be part of this important work in the life of Glebe-St James, please let Jennifer Reid know. This involves making telephone calls three or possibly four times a year. In addition to the calls themselves, an important part of the role is to take good notes and pass them to Jennifer so we can follow up.

Many of the callers are also members of the Friendly Visitors pastoral care team, although the two roles are not necessarily linked. If you are interested in this aspect of what we do as a congregation, Jennifer can put you in touch with Adele MacLeod, the coordinator of our pastoral care ministries.

Friendly Visits Friendly visits: an empathetic person to listen to you – your celebrations, your sorrows, your concerns and your joys. If you would like a visit, or know someone who would, please contact the GSJ office at 613-236-0617 / [email protected] or Adele MacLeod [email protected] WIG The Women’s Intergenerational Group will meet on Sunday, November 3rd following morning worship. The topic “female experience in traditionally male work places” is inspired by the book The Stone Frigate, about a female cadet’s experience at the Royal Military College. Liz Caswell will join us to talk about her experience as an RMC alumna.

On November 10, Glebe-St James will host the Ottawa book launch of Tender to the World: Jean Vanier, L'Arche, and the United Church of Canada. Author Carolyn Whitney-Brown will talk about the role the United Church of Canada has played in Vanier's shared community with people with intellectual disabilities. Octopus books will have a table at the event to sell this book and a second that she has recently published on the World-wide growth of L'Arche. The book launch will be at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Poster attached.
