The Cefn Viaduct Cefn Mawr Viaduct The Chester and Shrewsbury railway runs at the eastern end of the Vale of Llangollen, beyond the parish boundary, passing through Cefn Mawr on route from Chester to Shrewsbury. It is carried over the River Dee by a stupendous viaduct, half a mile down stream from the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. It measures one thousand five hundred and eight feet in length, and stands one hundred and forty-seven feet above the level of the river. The structure is supported by nineteen arches with sixty foot spans. In 1845 rival schemes were put forward for railway lines to join Chester with Shrewsbury. Promoters of the plan to link Shrewsbury to Chester via Ruabon had to work quickly to get their scheme moving. Instructions for the notices and plans were only given on the 7th November and they had to be deposited with the clerk of Peace by the 30th November 1845. Hostility from objecting landowners meant that Robertson had to survey the land by night. One irate squire expressed a wish that someone would 'throw Robertson and his theodolite into the canal'. Henry Robertson told a Parliamentary Committee of the advantage of providing a railway line that would open up coalfields of Ruabon and Wrexham to markets at Chester, Birkenhead and Liverpool in the north and to Shrewsbury and other Shropshire towns on the south side. The Parliamentary Committee agreed with him and the bill received Royal Assent on 30th June 1845. The Shrewsbury and Chester Railway Company made good progress with construction work and the line to Ruabon from the north was opened in November 1846. -

The Ceiriog Trail Route description Explained in a clockwise direction starting at Spring Hill Farm at Grid Reference SJ 210 346 (Lat 52.903464 Long -3.175237). All distances and heights are approximate. Assuming a start from Spring Hill, turn left towards Oswestry. At Llechrydau, follow stone track on right keeping farm buildings on left. After 100 yards take left-hand track heading up field with hedge on right-hand side. After one mile at junction of grass tracks, carry straight on along main path and downhill on a stony track through a ford and uphill into farmyard (Bwlchydonge). Carry on through yard up the drive to road. At road turn right for a third of a mile. Ignore stone track on right opposite a bungalow, but fork right up next stone track (bridleway). After gate turn right and follow track uphill passing through conifer plantation. Keep to main track and go through gateway. Turn left onto stone track keeping reservoir on right, carry straight on, past bridge on right, through forest on main track until gate out of forest. Once out of forest follow rutted track through field (take care – deep ruts) to bridleway on right. Turn right following bridleway until through gate into field with mast. Turn left and carry on along fence until gate in corner, do not go through gate but follow track on right back across field marked with reflector posts. Follow towards road. 50 yards before road, turn left onto stony track going downhill. At fork take right-hand fork, keep on track until it becomes a tarmac lane near bottom of hill. -

People, Places and Policy Set within the context of UK devolution and constitutional change, People, Places and Policy offers important and interesting insights into ‘place-making’ and ‘locality-making’ in contemporary Wales. Combining policy research with policy-maker and stakeholder interviews at various spatial scales (local, regional, national), it examines the historical processes and working practices that have produced the complex political geography of Wales. This book looks at the economic, social and political geographies of Wales, which in the context of devolution and public service governance are hotly debated. It offers a novel ‘new localities’ theoretical framework for capturing the dynamics of locality-making, to go beyond the obsession with boundaries and coterminous geog- raphies expressed by policy-makers and politicians. Three localities – Heads of the Valleys (north of Cardiff), central and west coast regions (Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire and the former district of Montgomeryshire in Powys) and the A55 corridor (from Wrexham to Holyhead) – are discussed in detail to illustrate this and also reveal the geographical tensions of devolution in contemporary Wales. This book is an original statement on the making of contemporary Wales from the Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data and Methods (WISERD) researchers. It deploys a novel ‘new localities’ theoretical framework and innovative mapping techniques to represent spatial patterns in data. This allows the timely uncovering of both unbounded and fuzzy relational policy geographies, and the more bounded administrative concerns, which come together to produce and reproduce over time Wales’ regional geography. The Grouped Parishes of Llay, Rossett and Isycoed Parish Profile October 2015 A Profile of the Diocese of St Asaph The Diocese of St Asaph is a diverse and hopeful community of faith. With roots in the Celtic church and a wealth of character and tradition, we seek to continue to uncover our shared vocation as God’s people in the Church in Wales in the north east of the Province. We are a Diocese in good heart and seek to persist in responding joyfully to God’s challenge. The Diocese follows the English/Welsh border in the east, whilst the western edge is delineated by the Conwy Valley. The northern boundary runs along the North Wales coast as far as Llandudno, but only takes in part of that town. The southern boundary runs from the lower end of Llyn Tegid (Lake Bala) across to Dolfor, just south of Newtown in Powys. Ecclesiastically it is bordered by the Dioceses of Chester, Lichfield and Hereford on the northern and eastern sides. To the south we border Swansea and Brecon Diocese and to the west, Bangor. The Diocese is predominantly rural, with many parishes having populations of less than 1000. However, there are important and continually developing industrial and commercial areas around Deeside (one of the largest industrial parks in Europe) and Wrexham and significant smaller developments along the two main arterial roads (A55 and A483). The coastal strip is home to traditional holiday resorts and tourism is an important industry in many parts of the Diocese. The largest employers are the local authorities through education and the health services with two large general district hospitals at Bodelwyddan and Wrexham. -

Executive Summary North Wales Joint Local Transport Plan Executive Summary Page 1 North Wales Joint Local Transport Plan 2015: Executive Summary Overview The Local Transport Plan (LTP) has been jointly produced by the six North Wales Local Authorities. Welsh local authorities are required to prepare a local transport plan and this can be jointly with one or more local transport authorities. Guidance by Welsh Government sets out that the LTP should draw on the work carried out already for the Regional Transport Plan. As such the North Wales LTP draws on the Taith Regional Transport Plan and recent work as part of the North East Wales Integrated Task Force, North Wales Ministerial Task Force and the Economic Ambition Board, for example, together with the Local Development Plans and policy and evidence being prepared in advance of a Regional Development Plan. The Local Transport Plan is to identify issues and opportunities for all aspects of transport but interventions and schemes should be limited to those that are within a local transport authority’s remit and should not include for example schemes relating to the rail or trunk road network. These aspects are contained in the National Transport Plan (NTP) published in draft for consultation in December 2014. The LTP will serve as a complementary document to the NTP and the North Wales Local Authorities look forward to working with the Welsh Government to address the issues and opportunities of transport in North Wales. The Joint LTP was submitted to Welsh Government on 30th January 2015 providing a detailed programme from 2015-2020 and a framework for schemes until 2030. -
