  • Cultural Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution
Cultural Diplomacy and Conflict Resolution Introduction In his poem, The Second Coming (1919), William Butler Yeats captured the moment we are now experiencing: Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere The ceremony of innocence is drowned; The best lack all conviction, while the worst Are full of passionate intensity. As we see the deterioration of the institutions created and fostered after the Second World War to create a climate in which peace and prosperity could flourish in Europe and beyond, it is important to understand the role played by diplomacy in securing the stability and strengthening the shared values of freedom and democracy that have marked this era for the nations of the world. It is most instructive to read the Inaugural Address of President John F. Kennedy, in which he encouraged Americans not only to do good things for their own country, but to do good things in the world. The creation of the Peace Corps is an example of the kind of spirit that put young American volunteers into some of the poorest nations in an effort to improve the standard of living for people around the globe. We knew we were leaders; we knew that we had many political and economic and social advantages. There was an impetus to share this wealth. Generosity, not greed, was the motivation of that generation. Of course, this did not begin with Kennedy. It was preceded by the Marshall Plan, one of the only times in history that the conqueror decided to rebuild the country of the vanquished foe.

  • 1 Why Media Researchers Don't Care About Teletext
1 Why Media Researchers Don’t Care About Teletext Hilde Van den Bulck & Hallvard Moe Abstract This chapter tackles the paradoxical observation that teletext in Europe can look back on a long and successful history but has attracted very little academic interest. The chapter suggests and discusses reasons why media and commu- nications researchers have paid so little attention to teletext and argue why we should not ignore it. To this end, it dissects the features of teletext, its history, and contextualizes these in a discussion of media research as a field. It first discusses institutional (sender) aspects of teletext, focusing on the perceived lack of attention to teletext from a political economic and policy analysis perspective. Next, the chapter looks at the characteristics of teletext content (message) and reasons why this failed to attract the attention of scholars from a journalism studies and a methodological perspective. Finally, it discusses issues relating to the uses of teletext (receivers), reflecting on the discrepancy between the large numbers of teletext users and the lack of scholarly attention from traditions such as effect research and audience studies. Throughout, the chapter points to instances in the development of teletext that constitute so- called pre-echoes of debates that are considered pressing today. These issues are illustrated throughout with the case of the first (est.1974) and, for a long time, leading teletext service Ceefax of the BBC and the wider development of teletext in the UK. Keywords: teletext, communication studies, research gaps, media history, Ceefax, BBC Introduction When we first started thinking about a book on teletext, a medium that has been very much part of people’s everyday lives across Europe for over forty years, we were surprised by the lack of scholarly attention or even interest.

  • Theologian, Musician, Author and Educator
Theologian, Musician, Author and Educator The gift collections of Dr. Jon Michael Spencer A Catalogue of Books, Microfilm, Journals and Vertical Files Donated to the L. Douglas Wilder Library Virginia Union University Compiled by Suzanne K. Stevenson, Special Collections Librarian Michelle A. Taylor, Technical Services Librarian Library Bibliography Series ©Spring 2002 1 PREFACE Since 1998, Dr. Jon Michael Spencer has donated more than 1,100 books from his personal research library as well as selected journals, microfilm of historic papers and research documentation to the L. Douglas Wilder Library at Virginia Union University. The subject areas reflect his specialties in the history and theology of African-American sacred and secular music, African history and slave culture, and African-American history and sociology. The collection includes a significant number of hymnals from various denominations. The former University of Richmond music and American studies professor is now a professor of religious studies at the University of South Carolina. He earned a music degree from Hampton University and completed graduate work in music composition as well as theology at Washington University and Duke Divinity School. Spencer donated this extensive collection to VUU for several reasons. Until the summer 2000, he was a resident of Richmond and VUU was the city’s African American university. As well, VUU has a School of Theology and Spencer has published extensively in the area of religion. Finally, his architect father, John H. Spencer, participated in the design of the Wilder library. It is in the elder Spencer’s name that Dr. Spencer has donated his collections. The books are housed in the library’s closed collections.

  • INTRODUCTION This Is a Study of the Contemporary Australian Book. The
INTRODUCTION This is a study of the contemporary Australian book. The book is a product of a complex cycle of events and processes which operate within the context of contemporary Australian society and which are informed both by history, and by the various social, political, intellectual, economic, cultural, and other conditions and conflicts at play in that society. This study examines the book and book culture: the events and processes of the book's 'life-cycle', and the historical and contemporary societal context in which these events and processes occur. The aim of the research is to provide an understanding of the nature of the contemporary Australian book, the conditions of its creation, production, distribution, reception, and use, and the various contextual influences on it. The review of the literature on the book and book culture which is included in this study, reveals a lack of material presenting a broad, or overall, view of book culture in Australia. This study seeks to provide such a view, and to illustrate the nature and conditions of book culture in Australia through both a general examination of aspects of book culture, and through the detailed examination of a single contemporary Australian book. Contemporary Australian book culture is here systematically examined, according to a model of the standard 'life-cycle' of a printed and bound book, that is, a model which depicts each process or event that the book commonly undergoes, as well as the environment in which these processes take place. One book, The Orchard written by Drusilla Modjeska and published by Pan Macmillan Australia, is presented as a case study, and is examined in detail.
