Previous meetings • Ajax won the first of their four European Cups by defeating Panathinaikos 2-0 in the 1971 final at Wembley. • A quarter of a century later, in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League semi-finals, Ajax once again came out on top, triumphing 3-0 in Athens after a 1-0 reverse in Amsterdam. The teams for the second leg in Greece, where Jari Litmanen scored twice, were: Panathinaikos: Wandzik, Apostolakis, Markos (Lagonikakis 84), Georgiadis, Kalitzakis, Kolitsidakis, Borrelli, Kapouranis, Warzycha, Marangos (Nioplias 74), Donis. Ajax: Van der Sar, Reiziger, Blind, F de Boer, Silooy (Wooter 86), R de Boer, Finidi George, Davids (Scholten 84), Kanu, Litmanen, Bogarde. • Panathinaikos's record in nine matches against Dutch opposition is W3 D2 L4 (W2 L2 at home). • Ajax have won seven of their 15 games against Greek teams, drawing five and losing the other three (W3 D2 L2 away). Form guide • Panathinaikos are unbeaten in six European games (W3 D3), including four in qualifying this season. • The Greens are also unbeaten in their last five continental home fixtures (W3 D2). • Having made it through their first three UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns, Panathinaikos have missed the cut in their last two attempts. • After three successful attempts to get through their UEFA Cup group, Ajax failed to qualify for the first time in the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League group stage. Links and trivia • The journey from Amsterdam to Athens is almost 2,200km. • Panathinaikos's Swedish forward Marcus Berg is in line to make his 50th UEFA club competition appearance; he has scored 21 European goals to date for his clubs. The coaches • Italian coach Andrea Stramaccioni led Panathinaikos to a third-place finish in Greece in 2015/16, his first season with the club. A qualified lawyer whose playing career was ended by injury, he specialised as a youth coach before leading Internazionale Milano and Udinese in Serie A. • A Dutch title winner as a midfielder with Feyenoord, Peter Bosz returned from Israel to take charge of Ajax in May 2016. Bosz has coached Heracles and Vitesse in the Netherlands, briefly coaching Maccabi Tel-Aviv in 2016. 4 Panathinaikos FC - AFC Ajax Thursday 15 September 2016 - 21.05CET (22.05 local time) Match press kit Apostolos Nikolaidis, Athens Team facts Panathinaikos FC Formed: 1908 Nickname: Prasini (The Greens) UEFA club competition honours (runners-up in brackets) • European Champion Clubs' Cup: (1971) Domestic honours (most recent triumph in brackets) League title: 20 (2010) Greek Cup: 18 (2014) Ten-year European record (UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League unless indicated otherwise) 2015/16: play-offs (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2014/15: group stage (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2013/14: did not feature in UEFA club competition 2012/13: group stage (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2011/12: play-offs (having transferred from UEFA Champions League third qualifying round) 2010/11: UEFA Champions League group stage 2009/10: round of 16 (having transferred from UEFA Champions League play-offs) 2008/09: UEFA Champions League round of 16 2007/08: round of 32 2006/07: round of 32 Records UEFA club competition • Biggest home win 6-1: Panathinaikos v FC Pirin Blagoevgrad 29/09/94, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup first round second leg 5-0: Panathinaikos v AS Jeunesse Esch 30/09/70, European Champion Clubs' Cup first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-6: FC Electroputere Craiova v Panathinaikos 16/09/92, UEFA Cup first round first leg • Heaviest home defeat 1-4 twice, most recently v Bayer 04 Leverkusen 20/10/93, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round first leg 0-3 twice, most recently v FC Barcelona 24/11/10, UEFA Champions League group stage • Heaviest away defeat 6-1: FC Dinamo Bucureşti v Panathinaikos 01/11/89, UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round second leg 5-0 twice, most recently v FC Barcelona 02/11/05 UEFA Champions League group stage UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League • Biggest home win 5-1: Panathinaikos v Budapest Honvéd FC 09/12/87, third round second leg 4-0: Panathinaikos v FC Electroputere Craiova 30/09/92, first round second leg • Biggest away win 0-6: FC Electroputere Craiova v Panathinaikos (see above) • Heaviest home defeat 1-3 twice, most recently v R.
