Ministry of Information : 97 Israeli violations against Palestinian journalists in latest aggression on Gaza The Government Media Office - Ministry of Information has documented an unprec- edented attack against press freedom by the Israeli occupation army in its most re- cent offensive against the Gaza Strip last May. The Office reported more than 97 violations against Palestinian journalists and their homes, vehicles and media offices. This attack is intended to suppress the truth and cover up Israeli violations against the Palestinian people by silencing the media or preventing media workers from as- suming their role, as the Israeli occupation government believes it has immunity from prosecution and accountability and acts above international law and norms, especially as no perpetrator of crimes against journalists and civilians have been p r o s e c u t e d . In a report, the office’s Monitoring and Follow Up Unit said that such violations marked an increase in violence against journalists and media organisations by Israeli occupation compared with the 2008, 2012, and 2014 onslaughts against the Gaza Strip. During its aggression on Gaza, Israeli occupation forces perpetrated several severe and grave violations against journalists and media outlets that amount to war crimes. The vast majority of these attacks were complicate crimes that have widespread short-and long-term consequences, paralyzing some media outlets for long periods of time. Total of Violations 97

47 Palestinian journalists killed since 2000

Since 2000, the Israeli occupation has killed 47 Palestinian journalists and media workers. On 19 May 2021, Israeli occupation warplanes launched two missiles at the apartment of 33-year-old Yousef Abu Hussein, a newsreader for Al-Aqsa radio, near Al- Sheikh Radwan junction in the northern Gaza Strip, killing him, and another one at his car. This indicates that the Israeli occupation army deliberately targeted Abu Hussein. Targeting journalists

The report found that more than 12 journalists have been injured while covering Israeli crimes against the Gaza Strip, some by the shrapnel from Israeli missiles and shells and others by bombing their homes while they were inside, leaving them with burns, fractures, and bruises all over their bodies. Patrial and completely demolishing of press offices

36 press offices and institutions were completely damaged as a result of Israeli occupation airstrikes against Al-Jalaa , Al-Jawhara, and Al-Shorouq high-rise buildings in Al-Rimal neighborhood in the center of Gaza City; the building were completely demolished. The 36 press offices incurred huge and expensive losses as a result of the destruction of journalists’ equipment, including satellite broadcast- ing equipment, studios and others. Other 9 press offices were partially damaged and some of their equipment were destroyed. Media production companies and institutions, as well as printing presses and publishing houses were completely damaged

The Israeli occupation also completely destroyed (11) buildings including advertising companies, art production, printing presses and publishing houses, during the bombing of occupation aircraft, both the Building of Awqaf west of Gaza City, Al Walid building in al-Ramal neighborhood in central Gaza City, and Keheil building in al-Thalathini Street south of al-Re- mal neighborhood of Gaza. The Israeli occupation aimed to erase the voices and images of artistic production representing the Palestinian identity, among which was the destruction of Mashareq Institution for Advertising, which is considered an integrated advertising sys- tem that has managed to be in a leading position in the media and advertising services sec- tor. Moreover, offices of publishing houses and printing presses were among the Israeli -oc cupation’s “Bank of Targets”, including Samir Mansour Bookshop for printing and publishing, which contained about 100,000 books documenting the history and heritage of the Palestin- ian people and the crimes and massacres committed by the occupation against safe civilians.

Not only did the Israeli occupation destroy the press headquarters, but its warplanes also targeted journalists at their homes while they were safe with their families. Some homes were destroyed completely while others were partially destroyed. According to statistics from the monitoring and follow-up unit of the Government Media Office, more than 22 homes became uninhabitable. Palestinian journalists were displaced by bombing their properties and homes.
