Hello and welcome to my first article since becoming the Chairman of the Warbstow Parish Council, a position I am very honoured and privileged to have been elected to. Roger Jones will continue in the capacity as Vice Chair and Coralie Short as Parish Clerk. I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Lynette Hutchinson onto the Council. I have taken over the role from Philip Uglow who sadly passed away on 23rd May 2017. Our most heartfelt sympa- thies and our thoughts are with Philip's family during this difficult time.

THANKS

Sue Uglow and family would like to thank all the wonderful neighbours and friends in Warbstow Parish and beyond who have been so supportive over the last few months during Philip's illness and subsequent death. It has been a huge help to us during this very difficult period to know that there are so many people in our community who care so much. The total donations of just over £4,900 have been split between The Brain Tumour Charity and Children's Hospice South West, as Philip wanted.

Thank you all.

I am thinking about running away more than I did when I was a kid However by the time I’ve put my teeth in, round up my glasses and found my keys. I forget where I am going!

AUGUST

It’s not my fault I have a double chin. When God was giving out chins I thought he said gin, so I said “I’ll have a double”!

On a more serious note my thoughts for this month are with the people of London and Manchester, who died or been injured in the attacks and the fire. Thoughts also for the emergency teams. (Hear, hear. Ed)

Page 11

WARBSTOW PUBLIC ACCESS DEFIBRILLATOR

After nearly three years I am pleased to say that the PAD, located on the front of the Community Centre, is now FULLY OPERATIONAL. Currently it is set up with adult pads which can accommodate anyone on or over the age of 8. At the time of writing the school are investigating the purchase of some children’s pads. The defibrillator will be available to anyone whom the ambulance service thinks may need to use it.

SO HOW IS IT USED?

1. In the event of an emergency dial 999. If the ambulance service feel that the use of the defibrillator is warranted they

will open the cabinet for you or your agent to go and collect.

2. At the same time a SMS message will be sent out to the local team who have been trained in CPR. They will be advised that the cabinet has been opened. One or more of them will meet whoever is sent to collect the defib and offer their services as someone

trained in CPR.

3. In the event of an emergency during school time, one of the trained school staff will hand over the defib to who ever goes to

collect it at the Community Centre gate.

4. After dialling 999 and sending someone for the defib if you are with a collapsed person stay on the line whilst the ambulance service operator will talk you through CPR. Do not delay CPR whilst waiting for the defib. 5. As soon as the defib is with the patient apply the pads and follow the spoken instructions.

BBARRYARRY JJORDANORDAN CCCC

Firstly, let me say how honoured I feel to have been elected to represent this community. I have attended a full day induction at County Hall and a group meeting last Saturday. I attended Tintagel Annual Parish meeting and was asked to help with the issues of rubbish that had been left lying around and cars speeding through the village. I raised both issues at the following day’s Council Meeting. These issues should be rectified within the next couple of weeks. I also attended the Parish Meeting at Lesnewth, and on Thursday 18th I attended the Annual meeting of Otterham & St Juliot Parish Council. Discussions took place with regard to vehicles speeding through Marsh- gate and Otterham Station and I will be approaching Oliver Jones to get monitors in these areas to check the speed of vehicles. I also discussed the road surfaces through Marshgate. These need to be skimmed and resurfaced and I will be approaching COR- MAC to get this done. I attended my first full Council meeting on Tuesday 23rd May. The LibDem/Ind group formed a coalition to run the Council for the first year. Mr Adam Paynter has been elect- ed Leader and he has named his cabinet. Our roles within the organisation will be more defined later. The new leader stated that “the ‘ City of Culture would not go ahead’ which was something that I and many of the Conservative group canvassed against. Making a saving in the first instance of £650.000, although he also stated that “£200 million would be spent on new council housing”. On Thursday 25th I had an early meeting with Peter Marsh and John James to discuss the Trebarwith toilets and, with the help of Scott Mann MP, I can report that we have a solution in place and the toilets are open again. I also attended the Boscastle Parish Council meeting who also raised the question of vehicles speeding along New road and they have asked to address this. I will follow this up and get a speed monitor put in as soon as possible. I was also asked to look at the problems in certain areas along New road where coaches hit guttering etc. This is a matter I will address as soon as possible. I have attended the Parish meetings at Lesnewth and Trevalga; I have yet to be invited to the Warbstow meeting and will do my best to attend and meet as many people as I can. I have been contacted by Rachel Daine from Warbstow with regard to a missing sign on the Warbstow School playing field. I must apologise as I have not yet been able to get back to her with a solution but will contact her as soon as possible. I look forward to the next four years with interest and I will do my best for everyone. I cannot promise to solve every problem but you can be guaranteed that I will try and I will keep you informed at every step. Thank you.

ASHBURY FARM

Week Green 1 To Canworthy

There is free parking in front of Week St Mary’s Post Office. Walk away from the Post Office and at the sign towards Penhallam turn right, continue down the lane until on the left you will see, a gate & sign post towards Week Green. Go through the gate and continue along a greenway; at the end there is another gate and a further 100 me- tres along is a track leading to the right marked with a 2 footpath sign. There are several buildings to the right and left but as you pass the last barn on the left take the right hand fork marked with a way post sign. This will pass through some woods to a stile; as you cross the stile continue on the same path to Ashbury Farm.

Page 18

3 Continue straight through the farm and at the last gate turn left. In front of you will be two fields. Take the left hand field but follow the right hand hedge down into the woods; at the bottom of the hill there are two stiles quite close together and keeping to the right approximately 200 metres on the right is a permissive path sign. There are two of these that mark the entrance to Penhallam Manor House. These are the ruins of a 13C Manor house and the 4 foundations have been preserved. More details can be found on the http:// www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/ penhallam-manor - and it’s free. Back out over the drawbridge follow the moat round anti-clockwise and you will eventually come to the main entrance to the site. Follow the main track for approximately half a mile and you will arrive at the official parking area for the site. Follow the lane to the right and continue up a moderately steep hill to a T junction. You’ll need to have had your Weetabix for this climb! Watch out for cars in the lane as it is narrow in plac- es. At T junction turn towards Week St Mary; opposite is a footpath sign across the field towards St Mary’s Church which you can see in the distance. Follow the hedge on the right to a footbridge. Cross the footbridge and stile and approach the earth- works. The earthworks are all that remain of a Nor- 5 man Motte & Bailey Castle that was built to keep the knights safe as they conquered Britain after 1066. Initially built with earthworks and a timber stockade some became more established and were rebuilt with stone, while others were abandoned once the Norman rule of law was established. Continue towards the Church and in the centre of the boundary hedge is a stile into St Mary the Virgin’s Churchyard, This ancient Church stands on the footings of its Norman predecessor in the original St. Mary’s Wyke. The new church, built in 1643, contains six bells which were hung in 1731 and is finished with battlements and pinnacles which are topped with crosses. Pass through the front gate and the short lane takes you back to the parking area in front of Week St Mary’s Post Office.

A MOVING EXPERIENCE - ADAM RUTTER

So...... We have moved! Anyone that has read my previous articles will be aware of my love of the area and also, be aware that, had I moved far, I would no longer be writing for this esteemed publication. You almost had a lucky escape!

It's about half a mile as the crow flies and just that much further from the beach, which actually isn't a great thing. Three minutes further...... should I really worry?!!

Moving then..... My advice is 'Don't do it!' if only for the reason that realisation suddenly dawns that there are still 20 unopened boxes in the loft from the last time you moved fifteen years ago.

I made, possibly a stupid mistake, in that because we were only moving just up the road, we would move lock stock and barrel without a big sort out prior to the event, and, that as we were only moving half a mile, we would not get a removal company involved and just do numerous trips in my van and our cars. For heavens sake, 'we can walk it in ten'. I won't be making those mistakes twice. That is principally because I won't be moving again of course! They'll have to take me out of here in a box I'm afraid! Whether I love or hate the place...... I ain't moving again!!!!!!!

For us, it was a two pronged attack. We moved the bulk of the 'house' stuff out on com- pletion and the day after, a second move date was then arranged for 10 days later once I had put a floor into what was to be my 'new' workshop. 'Workshop day' consisted of roping in a couple of mates with strong backs and a sheep trailer to move the 'stupidly heavy' workshop tools.

We had the additional fun of the fact that we were letting the 'old house', so somewhere in the intervening period, we had to do all the things that we hadn't done over the last 15 years. All those things you live with, to do 'another day'. Like a typical builder, I had done masses of work on the house but never quite finished it. A bit of plaster here, a coat of paint there...... endless. We aren't 'mingers' but it is quite amazing how thick the dust gets in those 'hard to reach' corners!!! We left what I consider the 'best house ever' in pretty good nick for the new folk; certainly in better nick than ever it had been when we lived there!. They are nice people and I'm sure that within minutes, you will know them better than us. No doubt, by now, they are already aware of what a great place to live this is and you guys just have to show them how friendly you all are too, as you did for me fifteen years ago!!

Anyway, we are 'in' but pretty much still living out of boxes and, I'm hoping that soon it will stop feeling like I'm living in someone else’s house. Hang some guitars up and get the drum kit set up in the living room and I'm sure it'll feel like home!!!

Actually, this rambling is not really about us moving house, it is about people helping out. Busy friends who have jobs and families yet still came down to lend elbow power Cont…. Page 20

and support. Not to mention the offers of help that we got but didn't end up taking. Even a chap who I have a friendly 5 minute chat with each week at Pilates class who turned up with his car and trailer. Just amazing! From the guys we bought the place from, the lovely people that stopped to chat and welcome us to 'the micro hamlet' whilst we were unloading our rubbish ( hmm.. hhmm contents of our house ) including 'sheep lady' and the fencing contractor...... all happy smiling faces, part of our old and our new life and part of this bloody lovely place. Enjoy it!!!

And…...... get to the beach...... just not Millook!!!!! That's mine!!!!!

7th May Calstock and Cothele Quay. A lovely area to visit. Nice walks, with bluebells at their best.

12th May Abba Girls, The Band, at Launceston Town Hall. A great tribute act. All the songs made famous by Abba. Much appreciated by the singing, clapping and dancing audience.

14th May Bridge Mill Gardens, Bridgerule. As in previous years, well worth a visit. The Mill working, as it was National Mills Day.

15th May A visit organised by The Jubilee Club, to Helligan Gardens. A beautiful and interesting place, well worth a second visit at some point in time.

20th May Two birthday parties to attend. First one at a well known venue in Bude, for 8year old Brendan. Noisy, but children like it, and it burns off their energy, we hope! Evening one at Marshgate. Won't say how old, but he knows! Good evening, with singing by The Boscastle Buoys.

21st May Week St. Mary East Cornwall under 9 team at Charlestown for their final. Won football match, against St.Columb.

10th June Fab Beatles at Bude. Venue full, Superb!

14th June RNLI race at Bude. 250 juniors ran 1 mile course, and 400 seniors the 6 mile course. Well done everyone. Warbstow School presented with trophy for entering the most pupils. 35 in all.

24th June Launceston Town Hall for Legend. The Bob Marley Experience good music but poor acoustics.

25th June Northcott Mouth near Bude. So beautiful. The Rustic Tea Garden is a must, if you can manage to eat the cream tea served by Margaret in her unique style. A laugh a minute! The difference between the Devon and Cornish way of presenting? Apparently, the Devon people are embarrassed by the quality of their cream. So, the cream is first, and covered with jam!
