h l 2 oil So much to see at Rotary Club of Sanibel-Captiva's Art Fair By LAURA BLASKOWITZ [email protected] Cool weather did not keep more than 7,000 residents and visitors from enjoying the Rotary Club of Sanibel-Captiva's 24th annual Arts & Crafts Fair last weekend. u With numerous tents brimming with a variety of art, the two-day u fair offered a unique opportunity for art and craft lovers to purchase a massive variety of everything from sculpture to pottery to jewel- ry to photography to fine art paint- ings. Fused glass artist Carol Lahy has been a participant in the fair almost from it's beginning. "I heard from others that it was a good show back in the 80s," she said. "I've been coming since 1985 and I love it every year." Second-time participant painter Juan Ramirez and wife Sandy said that they enjoyed this year's larger crowds. Ramirez's* paintings, which fuse, in abstract, the rhythm c and joy of music with human emo- tion provided a vibrant contrast to the delicate watercolors and 03 whimsical glass works in the sur- rounding booths. With more than 100 artists at the event, the Rotary Fair had a variety of beautifully hand-crafted items from which to choose. "We thought it was wonder- "3 ful," said Delaware resident and visitor to the fair Kathy Boyd. "We saw so many new and different LAURA BLASKOWITZ things." "It's incredible," said fabric artist Katie Gardenia. "It's one big family with 23 of us work- ing in an artists' cooperative." jo To celebrate the milestone, artists and guests got down at the gallery last Saturday with blues band The Ogles and the Oak, a chocolate fountain and champagne. "I think it's great. It provides a since of the community. It's part of the Sanibelcharacter," said party-goer Darla Letourneau. While Tower Gallery is well-known on the island, it took several years and moves before set- tling into their Tarpon Bay Rd. location. Beginning at the Bell Tower mall in Port Myers in 1982, it was not until six years later that the gallery was able to call Sanibel home. In 1993 the gallery joined former island residents and artists Ikki and Polly Matsumoto at its current location. Since the move to Tarpon Bay, Tower Gallery has o offered many local artists the chance to have a hand in the display and sale of their es work. "As an artist, it's helped me grow," Lalita Cofer said. "It sounds trite, but it's inspiring being around art C3 and other artists. Its always encouraging." Many of the gallery's artists noted that working in the gallery allows them a »5 chance to hear feedback on their work. "It's a source of enjoy- ment," explained artist Charles Lister. "It means a lot to me. We get a lot of com- munity support. When you work shifts you get to meet people. You get a response to your work when people come in and look. McIver was born and reared in a small town in south- western Pennsylvania. She began pianb lessons at the age of six and organ lessons at 13. McIver was educated at Oberlin College and Conservatory and received graduate degrees in German from Wisconsin University and West Virginia University. She met her husband, Bill, in Austria when they were both music students in Salzburg. At age 16, McIver played the organ in her home church. She had a church job in college and later served First Lutheran in Greensboro, N.C. as organistldirector for 26 years. She has conducted children's choirs, hand bell choirs, and adult choirs as well as coordinating church musical events and services. She has been active in the American Guild of Organists and the Choristers Guild and is a mem- ber of the American Hymnology Association. She founded a music program for the church preschool and ran a chil- dren's arts camp for several summers. McIver now lives in Webster, New York wheie she makes pottery, teaches English as a second language, has recently taken up horseback riding and shovels snow in its season. All are welcome to enjoy this free gift sponsored by the music committee of the church. . Kiwanis spaghetti dinner is this ~aturdayat the Community House By BOB WIMBUSH It's widely speculated that ossified 50150, auction and raffle tickets, not shells, compose the soil of these Islands, but that is only partially true. But for magic, those shards would be swept away by the sea. A portion of that magical glue will be revealed and renewed on Saturday, Feb. 24, when Bank of the Islands, Century 21 J.B. Novelli Internationale, Bailey's and the Sanibel-Captiva Trust Company present the Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner. Watch or participate as neighbor on neighbor friendships reveal the real substance and tradition of these Islands. For over 30 years The Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner has represented island building at its best. Even if.you7re a visitor, wanna know what it's like to live here? Come to the Spaghetti Dinner. Island camaraderie, not the 300 pounds of dry Spaghetti, thousands of meatballs, huge pots of sauce exotically fla- vored by Rich Calabrese, or dinner specialty, Maitre d' ala Muench (His crews' "Eat Up, Drink Up, Get Up" shirts were a real hit last year) - has established the Kiwanis Spaghetti Dinner as Sanibel and Captiva's largest single indoor event. One goes to see rather than to be seen. In fact, some years the club has had to eschew responsibility for rumors started when prominent no-shows were presumed dead simply because every islander's presence is assumed. Anthropologists marvel how the Spaghetti Dinner con- tinues to richen our texture of life. Glad and sad news is exchanged and views are shared. Neighbors commune with neighbors; kids see their pals. Go, and you'll be introduced to people you've heard about and always wanted to meet. Of course there will be a drawing, a raffle and an auction. This is Sanibel, after all. On Saturday Feb. 24, over 1,000 islanders will attend. By Sunday, Brigadoon-like but rcnewed, the island will set- 'tle back to normal, and those now used tickets will have melded into Sanibel tradition, strengthening the very soil on which our island is built. To share in or, if you're an anthropologist, to observe, one of the Island's oldest traditions, hurry out to buy an advance ticket for $8 from any Kiwanian, or from Periwinkle Park, Big Red Q, Bank of the Islands, Century 21 JB Novelli Internationale, or Sanibel-Captiva Trust. Tickets will be $9 at the door. Kids under 10 eat free. Doors at the Community House open at 4:30 p.m., and although the last dinners will be served about 7:45 p.m., music, danc- ing, desserts, raffle, camaraderie, island-building and the auctions go until 10. As with all Kiwanis undertakings, pro- ceeds go to benefit the island and the kids who live here. Romance-themed open mic to be held at The Bean Valentine's Day 2007 will be celebrat- Day experiences.
