Information 2012, 3, 351-371; doi:10.3390/info3030351 OPEN ACCESS information ISSN 2078-2489 www.mdpi.com/journal/information Concept Paper Terms for Talking about Information and Communication Corey Anton School of Communications, Grand Valley State University, 210 Lake Superior Hall, Allendale, MI 49401, USA; E-Mail: [email protected]; Tel.: +1-616-331-3668; Fax: +1-616-331-2700 Received: 4 June 2012; in revised form: 17 August 2012 / Accepted: 20 August 2012 / Published: 27 August 2012 Abstract: This paper offers terms for talking about information and how it relates to both matter-energy and communication, by: (1) Identifying three different levels of signs: Index, based in contiguity, icon, based in similarity, and symbol, based in convention; (2) examining three kinds of coding: Analogic differences, which deal with positive quantities having contiguous and continuous values, and digital distinctions, which include “either/or functions”, discrete values, and capacities for negation, decontextualization, and abstract concept-transfer, and finally, iconic coding, which incorporates both analogic differences and digital distinctions; and (3) differentiating between “information theoretic” orientations (which deal with data, what is “given as meaningful” according to selections and combinations within “contexts of choice”) and “communication theoretic” ones (which deal with capta, what is “taken as meaningful” according to various “choices of context”). Finally, a brief envoi reflects on how information broadly construed relates to probability and entropy. What is psychoanalysis? Psychoanalysis is both a theory of the human mind and a therapeutic practice. It was founded by Sigmund Freud between 1885 and 1939 and continues to be developed by psychoanalysts all over the world. Psychoanalysis has four major areas of application: 1) as a theory of how the mind works 2) as a treatment method for psychic problems 3) as a method of research, and 4) as a way of viewing cultural and social phenomena like literature, art, movies, performances, politics and groups. Migratory psychoanalysis MICHAEL P. STEINBERG Brown University In September 2004 I participated in a conference in La plata, Argentina, on the topic of “the State and the politics of Memory: Archives, Museums, and Education.”1 the conference was convened by the comisión provincial por la Memoria, an authority commissioned in 2000 by the provincial government of Buenos Aires (whose capital is La plata) with the task of developing a public and comparative discourse of Vergangenheitsbewaeltigung, or coming to terms with the past. the Argentine past in question is the military regime that held power between 1976 and 1983, unleashing a campaign of state terrorism responsible for the murder of 30,000 citizens, with a severe overrepresentation, in increasing order, of youth, secondary school and university students, and Jews. the city of La plata boasts an important university; as a result, the violence there was especially severe. the comisión por la Memoria is housed in a former police headquarters known to the citizens of La plata as a site of torture and other hor- rors. Its task includes the preservation and dissemination of the archive of the state security forces (dIpBA), containing 3,800,000 files as well as other materials, including, for example, 160 recordings of bugged telephone conversations.2 to my surprise and, I must confess, to my relief, the large public audience proved quite interested in the topic of my own contribution: discourses and sites of public memory and history in Berlin. As it turns out, a delegation from the comisión por la Memoria was about to travel to Berlin to consult with analogous scholars and archivists there, specifically with the archivists of the Stasi files. -

Irigaray advances and ramifies Lacanian assertion by adding that the feminine flow may not simply be measured as the hysteric or unrestrained discharge of female vagina; on the contrary the discharge of feminine olfactory is a real challenge for masculine solidity. Concisely, the feminine jouissance flows in its own pleasure, without any consideration of defying the masculine solidity. However, the feminine jouissance is liberated, redemptive and narcissistic and above it exists as a gratuitous pure jouissance; redeemed of any desire to dominate. KEYWORDS: Unconscious, Jouissance, Phallus Paper Freud undertook a challenge of dividing the human mind into three segments which, as a composite structure, is known as the topography of the human mind. Superego, ego, and id indulge in a dialogue to consummate the desire of the narcissistic ego which for Freud is the pleasure- seeking agency, i.e., id. According to Lacan, the ego is not a separate agency rather it is closely knit within the cathexis of libidinal energy. Love and illness transfer ego projection; Love transfers ego to the other body by cathexis. -

In earlier times, of course, it was necessary to pay special attention to the theoretical significance of non-analytic psychotherapy. Statements were frequently bandied about that psycho-analysis was nothing more than camouflaged suggestion : moreover, the fact that analytic method was based on experiences derived from situations of rapport between physician and patient, as for example, in hypnosis, made some theoretical differentia tion desirable. Most discussions of the ‘ resolution of transference ’ can be regarded as contributions to this problem, affording a rough but serviceable distinction between analytic and other therapeutic methods. And the special studies of Freud (1) on group psychology, Ferenczi (2) on transference, Ernest Jones (3) on suggestion and auto-suggestion, Abraham (4) on Couéism and an unfinished study by Radö (5) on the processes of cure, have given a broader theoretical basis to this differentiation. Nevertheless we are periodically stimulated to reconsider the relations between different forms of psychotherapy, more particularly when any advance is made in analytic knowledge. When such advances occur we are bound to ask ourselves, ' what happened to our cases before we were in a position to turn this fresh knowledge to advantage ? ' Admittedly we would not be under this obligation had we not previously used terms such as ‘ cure ', ' thorough analysis etc., etc. -

1 Deep under the “mess” A hoarding syndrome, Syllogomania, disposophobia, The Collyer Brother's syndrome, the Bowebird symptom, »messy«, the Messie-Phenomenon….. In my essay I will describe a part of life style of two persons, I will name them John and Jane. We will try to understand, to know, to see, to hear, to feel their style of life and there personality structure. I will add my observations and some theory about Hoarding, Borderline Personality Disorder, Obsessive - Compulsive Personality Disorder and Psychoanalytical theory and try to understand and describe that the problem of “mess” and hoarding is a symptom of something that is deep under the “mess” - we can see the “mess”. Can we see also under the “mess”? What is covered deeper? What is covered under the “mess” by John and Jane? What are they hoarding and what they did (or do) not get? John is a 36 years old man. He says that his problems begun at the age of 16. He has taken forbidden drugs, drunk too much alcohol, has stolen cars, was in re-educating institution for teenagers, had problems in his primary family, with “not understandable mother and father”, and has had partner relationships, that all have ended in a bad way. His first love was a girl, who loved driving cars very fast. John describes this love as a ”mystical” love. The girl had a car accident and died. John has after this accident drunk even more alcohol and tried to commit a suicide. John has had visual hallucinations and has heard voices. -

Volume 1 (Issue 2), 2012 GROUP ACTS AND MISSED ENCOUNTER: LACAN AND FOULKES1 Erica Burman Prologue The theme of action outside speech typically does not gain positive treatment in psychoanalytical contexts, with all such action vulnerable to being designated “acting out”, or at best “acting in”. But the question “how to act” transcends such false oppositions between acting and not acting, to topicalise instead ethical responsibility and social engagement. In this paper these themes are explored in terms of the relations between Lacanian psychoanalytic and Foulkesian group analytic ideas. The assertion of the priority of one model over the other, or the assimilation of one to the other is not aimed at here, but rather this paper seeks to highlight, and perhaps indicate, some potential evaluations of how each approach attempts to engage with the question of action. While Lacanian psychoanalysis often draws a strong boundary around the analytic space, resisting the generalization of psychoanalytic phenomena outside the clinic, the social model of the psyche to which group analysts are committed, means that no such absolute distinctions can be maintained. Paradoxically, group analysts seem rather more reluctant than Lacanians to discuss questions of ethics, preferring to talk about questions of democracy, although both models share an understanding of analytical process in terms of the 1 This article is a version of a paper delivered at APPI’s 17th Annual Congress (2010) entitled; How to Act – Ethics and the Psychoanalytic Clinic in a Culture of Suppression and Demand. 22 23 Lacunae promotion of (if also the impossibility of) free speech. The challenge therefore, is to find ways of both analyzing and intervening in, the contexts that give rise to analysis.
