However, they discontinue their Implanon before its expiry date was high, but factors that contribute to discontinuing their Implanon were poorly described in Ethiopia. Methods. A community based unmatched case control study was conducted. Then simple random sampling technique was used to select 340 women. Data was collected by nurses using face to face interview. Epi-Info version 7 and SPSS 20 software were used. -

Shewayrga and Sopade Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine 2011, 7:19 http://www.ethnobiomed.com/content/7/1/19 JOURNAL OF ETHNOBIOLOGY AND ETHNOMEDICINE RESEARCH Open Access Ethnobotany, diverse food uses, claimed health benefits and implications on conservation of barley landraces in North Eastern Ethiopia highlands Hailemichael Shewayrga1* and Peter A Sopade2,3 Abstract Background: Barley is the number one food crop in the highland parts of North Eastern Ethiopia produced by subsistence farmers grown as landraces. Information on the ethnobotany, food utilization and maintenance of barley landraces is valuable to design and plan germplasm conservation strategies as well as to improve food utilization of barley. Methods: A study, involving field visits and household interviews, was conducted in three administrative zones. Eleven districts from the three zones, five kebeles in each district and five households from each kebele were visited to gather information on the ethnobotany, the utilization of barley and how barley end-uses influence the maintenance of landrace diversity. Results: According to farmers, barley is the “king of crops” and it is put for diverse uses with more than 20 types of barley dishes and beverages reportedly prepared in the study area. The products are prepared from either boiled/roasted whole grain, raw- and roasted-milled grain, or cracked grain as main, side, ceremonial, and recuperating dishes. The various barley traditional foods have perceived qualities and health benefits by the farmers. Fifteen diverse barley landraces were reported by farmers, and the ethnobotany of the landraces reflects key quantitative and qualitative traits. Some landraces that are preferred for their culinary qualities are being marginalized due to moisture shortage and soil degradation. -

DRMTechnical Periodic Monitoring Report Working 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document – Ethiopia Group Covering 1 Jan to 31 Dec 2016 Prepared by Clusters and NDRMC Introduction The El Niño global climactic event significantly affected the 2015 meher/summer rains on the heels of failed belg/ spring rains in 2015, driving food insecurity, malnutrition and serious water shortages in many parts of the country. The Government and humanitarian partners issued a joint 2016 Humanitarian Requirements Document (HRD) in December 2015 requesting US$1.4 billion to assist 10.2 million people with food, health and nutrition, water, agriculture, shelter and non-food items, protection and emergency education responses. Following the delay and erratic performance of the belg/spring rains in 2016, a Prioritization Statement was issued in May 2016 with updated humanitarian requirements in nutrition (MAM), agriculture, shelter and non-food items and education.The Mid-Year Review of the HRD identified 9.7 million beneficiaries and updated the funding requirements to $1.2 billion. The 2016 HRD is 69 per cent funded, with contributions of $1.08 billion from international donors and the Government of Ethiopia (including carry-over resources from 2015). Under the leadership of the Government of Ethiopia delivery of life-saving and life- sustaining humanitarian assistance continues across the sectors. However, effective humanitarian response was challenged by shortage of resources, limited logistical capacities and associated delays, and weak real-time information management. This Periodic Monitoring Report (PMR) provides a summary of the cluster financial inputs against outputs and achievements against cluster objectives using secured funding since the launch of the 2016 HRD. -

Although the academic and official literature on artisanal opals; anomies; violence small-scale opal mining (ASOM) has primarily focused on the loss of wealth owing to a lack of skill and its traditional nature, this study explores the multidimensional insecurity that the discovery and mining of opal stones in the Delanta wereda of Wollo has brought about. -

FIELD NOTES OCTOBER 2016 THE AGRICULTURE KNOWLEDGE, LEARNING, DOCUMENTATION AND POLICY PROJECT (AKLDP) EL NIÑO IN ETHIOPIA IMPACTS OF DROUGHT ON YOUNG RURAL WOMEN IN EASTERN AMHARA NATIONAL REGIONAL STATE Introduction In June 2016 the AKLDP produced the first of two Field Notes that documents the impact of the El Niño on the lives and livelihoods of young rural women in North and South Gondar, Amhara National Regional State. This edition of Field Notes documents the impact of the El Niño on rural young women in two zones of eastern Amhara National Regional State: Wag Hemra and North Wollo. The AKLDP commissioned two women researchers1 who interviewed 92 young women aged15 to 252 from severely drought affected woredas. The researchers conducted 10 focus group discussions — five in each zone. Specifically, two focus group discussions (FGDs) were held in Zikuala woreda and three in Sekota woreda (Sirel and Tsemera rural kebeles) in Wag Hemra. In North Wollo, three FGDs were held in Guba Lafto woreda (Jarsa and Estaysh kebeles), one in Habru woreda (Mehal Amba kebele) and one in Raya Kobo woreda (kebele 15). In each case, FGDs were structured around key questions including the impact of drought, household coping strategies, and interventions that might help address priority needs. As with the Field Notes from North and South Gondar, the researchers made every effort to interview poorer young rural women who, it could be expected, had suffered the worst impacts of the drought. The fieldwork was carried out in the last week of March and the first week of April 2016. -

Gender Specialist, NGO, 500 Wolaita Sodo, ETHIOPIA *Correspondence (Email): [email protected] ABSTRACT Few researchers in Ethiopia have studied issues related to unintended pregnancy and little has been discussed about its cause especially in the rural parts of the county. Moreover, efforts to reduce the incidence of unintended pregnancy were very weak. Hence, there is a continued need for research, information sharing and documentation of efforts aimed at reducing unintended pregnancy. Hence the objective of this study is to measure the level of unintended pregnancy and identify associated factors among currently pregnant women in Duguna Fango Woreda, Wolaita Zone, South Ethiopia. Facility based Cross-sectional study method were instrumental under current study. Four hundred Seventy Seven (477) respondents were selected by systematic random sampling method from five health centers. Data collected through structured and pre-tested questionnaire, and analyzed using SPSS for windows version 16.0. Bivariate and multivariate logistic analysis was used to calculate the odds ratios with 95% confidence interval for the different risk factors. The level of significance was set at P < 0.05. It is concluded that, unintended pregnancy was found to be a major reproductive health problem in the study area and thus deserves priority attention. It is recommended that, different partners in partnership with the government to address the issue of improving income among women, improving their perception, empowerment, economic status and women on reproductive health issues is encouraged.
