Obe partije završene su remijem posle srazmerno mirne borbe. Karjakin je protiv Jonesa u otvaranju odustao od ponavljanja poteza i dos- peo u prilično neprijatnu poziciju, ali je miroljubivo nastrojeni Englez izmenio svoje aktivne skakače, posle čega je ubrzo potpisan mir. Dosta dobru šansu da turnir počne pobedom propustio je Pjotr Svidler – on je bio prinuđen da podeli poen s Adhibanom. Pobede u završnicama ostvarili su beli u parovima Kramnik – Wei Yi, Anand – Matlakov i Giri – Hou Yifan. GIRI – HOU YIFAN Partija je podsetila na siže susreta između Magnusa Carlsena i Hou Yifan u Wijk aan Zeeu 2016. Mirna varijanta ruske partije, figure poste- peno napuštaju tablu, partija stiže do jednake damske, a zatim i pešačke završnice, u kojoj Kineskinja propuš- ta remi. Verovatno su se Giri i Hou Yifan prisetili te epizode od pre dve godine, ali je Hou odagnala ružne 55... °c6? Opasnost je trebalo misli, a Anish se nadao i tražio šansu očekivati s druge strane. Pravilno je do kraja. 55... °d6 i sada se na 56.c4 može zaš- Braneći se od ideje proboja b4-b5, tititi pešakom – 56...c6. A u slučaju crni u cajtnotu greši. proboja 56.b5 axb5 57. °b4 c6 58.a6 7 Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee 2018 °c7 59. °c5 b4 60. °xb4 °b6 61.a7 58. °d2! Igra na iznudicu. Sada se °xa7 62. °c5 °b7 63. °d6 neočeki- ne može igrati 58...c5 zbog 59.bxc5+ vano spasava 63...d4! 64. °e7 c5 65. °xc5 60. °d3 °b4 61. °xd4 °xa5 °xf7 c4 – dame izlaze istovremeno. 62.c5+–. 56.c4! d4 57. °c2 °d6 58...c6 59. °e2 i crni je prinuđen da odstupi kraljem i prepusti pešaka d4. 59... °d7 (ili 59… °e6 60.b5) 60. °d3 °c7 61. °xd4 °d6 62. °d3 °c7 63. °e4 °d6 64. °d4 1–0 8 Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee 2018 ANAND – MATLAKOV Crni je u otvaranju žrtvom pešaka zahvatio inicijativu na oba krila, Anand je u zamenu dao dva pešaka, paralelno ostvarivši prebacivanje kralja pešice na h2. Bez obzira na odsustvo pešaka, poslovi crnog još uvek nisu tako žalosni – aktivirao se top, i belom nije lako da ostvari napredak. 37. e2 °g7 38. •c8 g5 39. •c6 •b3. Postojala je šansa da se stvori aktivna kontraigra posredstvom 39... Crni je sada prinuđen da vrati h5 sa sledećim h4 ili g4, ali se ni u pešaka, ali je Maksim odlučio da će to slučaju prostog laviranja ne vidi kako u svakom slučaju biti «b» pešak, pa je beli može suštinski pojačati svoj po- tačnom 27... e7 pretpostavio aktiv- ložaj. nije 27... g5?! 40. •c3 •b4 41.b3 •d4 42. •c6 Posle odgovora 28. £xd6! beli •b4 43. f3 °h7 44. •d6 °g7 45. skakač stuže u pomoć svom kolegi na •d5 f6 h4, pomažući mu da se izvuče na f5. 28... §e6 29. £hf5 £xf5? Žalos- na nužda, jer posle 31...f6 32.d4! exd4 33. •f4! h5 34. •xd4 §f7 35. e7 beli potpuno vezuje crne figure za 46. °g1! Bez obzira što su na tabli zaštitu kralja, dok paralelno nišani prisutne dame i topovi, Anand odlu- pešaka b6. čuje da zaposli kralja zaštitom peša- 32. xg4+ °h7 33. £e4 §xe4 34. ka e4. Kralj se po potrebi može upu- dxe4 •d8 35. •c1 •d4 36. •c7 •b4 titi i na c3 da bi uznemirio blokira- 9 Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee 2018 nog crnog topa, a može poći čak i na kraljevo krilo – u pomoć svojim teš- kim figurama. 46... °h7 47. d3 °g7 48. °f2 •d4. Pojavljivanjem kralja na f3 beli dobija mogućnost da napadne topa potezom c3, samim tim primorava- jući crnu damu da se prestroji na c7 – 48... e7 49. °f3 c7, i sada se kralj pridružuje napadu – 50.g4! b5 51.g5 hxg5 52. °g4! c1 53.g3! Ipak je to Beli vrši standardan pritisak, ma- bila najbolja praktična šansa za da postojanje dobre odbrambene crnog, jer u damskoj završnici on u konstrukcije, sastavljene od pešaka perspektivi gubi još jednog pešaka. e7 i skakača d6, daje crnom dobre 49. •xd4 exd4 50. b5 izglede na postepeno izjednačenje. Još je sledilo 50... d8 51. d5 f6 52.g4 °g8 53. °f3 i Matlakov je prekratio otpor. KRAMNIK – WEI YI Ova pozicija se ne sreće prvi put u stvaralaštvu Vladimira Kramnika. Pamti se njegova pobeda nad Topa- lovom u Londonu 2016. U partiji je Wei Yi izabrao tačno Vladimir Kramnik 9... £a6 10. £xc3 £xc5 i posle 11. §e3 £fe4 12. £xe4 £xe4 13. §d4 16. •ac1. U partijama Anisha Giri- §xd4 14. xd4 xd4 15. £xd4 £d6 ja već dva puta se sretala pozicija igra je iz otvaranja odmah prešla u koja nastaje posle 16. •fc1 •d8 – naj- završnicu katalonskog tipa. pre za belog – 17.f4 °f8 18. °f2 •b8 10 Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee 2018 19. •c5 £e4+?! Crni je odbacio uzima- nje na g2 zbog varijante 28... §xg2 29.e6+! fxe6 30. £e5+ °d8 31. £f7+ °d7 32. •xc8 °xc8 33. °xg2 £d6 34. £g5, i u toj naizgled neprijatnoj završnici nije našao spasonosnu rep- liku 34...e5! 35.fxe5 h6! – i sada se lako drže kako pešačka, tako i završ- nica skakača. U krajnjem slučaju, bolje je bilo i 28... £g7 29. £c5+ °e8 30. £a6 §d7 31. •xc8+ §xc8 s analo- gnom završnicom s manjkom pros- 20.e4. Ništa ne daje pravolinijsko tora. 20. •c7 •ac8 21. •fc1 °e8. Za razliku 29. •c4 £e6 30.f5! gxf5 31.gxf5 od partija-prethodnica, gde su se beli £g7? marljivo borili za «c» liniju, Kramnik ovde demonstrira drugi mogući plan pritiska – pokretanje «e» pešaka i potiskivanje skakača s polja d6. 20... •ac8 21. •xc8 •xc8 22. •d1 °e8 23.e5 £f5 24. £b3 §c6. Možda je ipak trebalo izmeniti i drugi par topova: 24... •c2+ 25. •d2 •xd2+ 26. £xd2 b6, mada posle 27.g4 £d4 28. 11 Tata Steel Wijk aan Zee 2018 Posle dugog razmišljanja u otva- SVIDLER – ADHIBAN ranju, crni u cajtnotu ponovo ne po- gađa pravi potez skakačem. 31... £d8 je omogućavalo da se izbegne obra- zovanje dodatnih slabosti – 32. §xc6+ £xc6 33. •h4 •h8. 32. §xc6+ bxc6. Na žalost, ne ide 32... •xc6 zbog 33.e6+! °e8 34.exf7+ °f8 35. •xc6 bxc6 36. £e5 s dobit- kom. 33. £c5+ °c7 34. •h4! Razvlače- nje odbrane po principu dve slabosti. 34...h5. 34... •h8 35. •b4 s upadom Beli je ovde igrao 21.

As is usual on these occasions, the professionals triumphed by a huge margin but, as in football's FA Cup, there was much excitement along the way, including one remarkable David versus Goliath achievement for an amateur player. This year's tournament is very special. It features a member of the ultra-exclusive '2800 Club'. The top seed is former FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov from Bulgaria, making his return to individual open tournament chess after two decades of playing only against fellow elite players in closed tournaments and big matches. Before the game he struck a positive note in interviews, saying how much he was looking forward to the challenge and suggesting he found the constant round of elite-only tournaments with the same handful of players to be a bit boring. In many ways Topalov is the Tal of the 21st century: if you had to pick out a player of the post-Kasparov era who always plays an aggressive game and fights for the point in every game – and, most importantly, does so with a consistently high degree of success – the genial Bulgarian would be a good choice. You only have to look at his games to realise that he is a man who relishes a challenge.

A few years later Bu easily won in the Chinese junior championship and went on to achieve success in the international arena: he won 3rd place in the U12 World Youth Championship in 1997 and 1st place in the U14 World Youth Championship in 1998. In 1999 he achieved three GM norms within only two months, which made him the youngest grandmaster at the time, at the age of 13 years 10 months and 13 days, a record that was only broken two years later by GM Sergey Karjakin . In 2000, Bu defeated the Azerbaijani chess talent Teimour Radjabov by 6½-1½ in an eight-game Future World Champions Match organized by Garry Kasparov and was considered a super talent for future world champion contender. In 2004, Bu became the chess champion of China.

The following six players have accepted wildcard invitations and will showcase their talents alongside the seven full tour participants in each event. Event Cote d’Ivoire Rapid & Blitz Paris Rapid & Blitz Date May 6 – May 13 July 26 – August 2 1 Yi, Wei Grischuk, Alexander 2 Topalov, Veselin Duda, Jan-Krzysztof 3 Amin, Bassem Dubov, Daniil The selections are consistent with the approach that will be adopted for all GCT events this year. While former FIDE World Champion GM Veselin Topalov and GM Alexander Grischuk are no strangers to the Tour, the other four wildcards will all be making their debut appearances at a GCT event. GM’s Wei Yi, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Daniil Dubov represent the very best of a growing group of emerging junior players while GM Bassem Amin is the reigning African Individual Champion as well as the number one ranked player from the African continent. We now have a sole leader on 4.5/5 in China's Yu Yangyi who beat the Russian GM Dimitri Bocharov with the black pieces in the top board match up. Several players had the chance to match that score but the draws by Lu Shanglei, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Surya Sekhar Ganguly, Avetik Grigorian and Merab Ganunashvili allowed Li Chao, a convincing winner over Dao Thien Hai, Ivan Sokolov who downed Xiu Deshun, and Boris Chatalbashev who beat Marat Dzhumaev to be the eight players in second place half a point behind on 4/5. Local hope Susanto Megaranto remained in contention with an unbeaten 3.5/5 after full blooded battle with IM Oliver Dimakiling that ended in a draw. Classical games are still seldom these days. I must admit that the flow of online rapid and blitz games depresses me. It is also reflected in the choices of Surveys in this Yearbook. When Magnus Carlsen plays some dreadful nonsense – which he would never have done in a classical game –, it has to be taken into account. My compliments to Ruslan Ponomariov; he had the courage to write about it. Admittedly, there have also been some fine theoretical battles in the online games. A good example is Nepo’s pawn sac in the Grünfeld against Anish Giri. Black’s 11th move has been known for quite some time and Giri must have prepared for it in detail. Still, his preparation fell short and Nepo won a marvellous game. Our own editor René Olthof wrote the Survey. Not all Surveys contain just rapid games. In my second Survey on the Ragozin with 6.♗f4 I have limited myself to one. And Tibor Fogarasi focuses on Wei Yi’s win over Sergey Karjakin in the Grand Prix tournament in Jerusalem last year. The young Chinese employed an old weapon from the 19th century in the Centre Game. It was played by ancient greats like Isidor Gunsberg and Jacques Mieses. As for the reviewed books in this issue: Alexander Ipatov’s two-volume book on unconventional opening ideas is quite interesting.

    No. 11 Welcome to Newsletter No 12. As the summer holidays draw to a close and a new school year begins, along with the start of autumn, it’s not clear yet what the next few weeks and months will bring chess wise. Hopefully junior chess will continue to thrive and grow in various forms and formats; looking back there have been some fantastic successes over the past few months. Dorset Junior Chess shine against Hampshire, Devon and Berkshire, coming third in second Inter- County junior chess tournament. The second Inter-county junior chess team battle took place on Saturday 17th July and the Dorset junior Chess team certainly did itself proud. With a somewhat depleted team due to the Delancey UK Chess Challenge Gigafinals taking place over the same weekend and a few other players not available, the team improved upon its performance in the first inter-county battle, coming third overall. With a team of just eight players, every score counted and, indeed, every player on the team contributed to the team total of 134 points. A fantastic team effort; well done to everyone! The Dorset Junior Chess team got off to a great start and, at around a third of the way into the 2 hour tournament, the team was lying in second place in a tight battle with Devon junior chess, with trading second and third places continuing for much of the match. At around the half way point, Dorset Juniors were dominating the leader board with 5 players in the top 10. Overall, Dorset had the highest average performance across all four county teams and the second highest average score per player.
