Whereas HMIS quality concerns like the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of reports have been more commonly assessed and reported about in a number of studies, relatively less documentation is found on the actual utilisation of the information generated from HMIS reports. Yet, the HMIS is not an end in itself but just a tool to inform managers and enable them take informed and timely decisions. This study assessed the utilisation of HMIS data for decision making at the grassroots level in Bufumbira East Health Sub-District (HSD) of Kisoro District. It was found that HMIS data were not used for decision making at the point of collection and that the HMIS was dogged by many problems like few dedicated staff. The staff lacked sensitization on the HMIS and were not trained in completing the reports and data analysis. Lower level units submitted their data directly to the district bypassing the HSD. The HMIS was not planned for and lacked funding and stationery. HMIS functioning was not a subject for support supervision and there was only verbal feedback from the district level.

Case finding of mental disorders is challenging since screening instruments, to be accurate, must be valid in the particular setting in which they are being applied Diagnosis in primary care clinics can also be challenging since patients usually present with a wide variety of problems that can be difficult to interpret. Our objective was to screen women for anxiety and depression in one district of southwest Uganda and to investigate their complaints and illness concepts. A second objective was to describe their idioms of distress, especially how their social circumstances relate to their illness. We chose to focus on women age 18-35 as a sample of convenience in our exploratory study. Methods: We screened for anxiety and depression 115 women chosen by convenience sampling at three sites providing services for women in the Kisoro district using the SRQ-20 Yes-No Questionnaire.Those who met criteria were immediately interviewed in the local language by a female Ugandan team member using Kleinman’s Eight Questions in order to elicit their explanatory model of illness.

The rains have been heavily pummeling the region for the last couple of weeks, with bridges flooding and roads cut off. The South Western Regional Police spokesman Elly Maate confirmed that in Kabale district, two people were struck by lightning in Kamwirima cell, Kanjobe parish, Kyanamira subcounty. The dead were identified as Robert Tumwijukye and Frank Tamukweise. The injured in Kisoro were admitted at Kisoro hospital, while those in Kabale are in Mutolere hospital. John Kamara, the Bufumbira North MP said five people were struck dead by lightening in two separate incidents in his constituency over the weekend. Kamara said two people died on spot at Nombe Village, Rubunguri parish, Kirundo subcounty and the third person died upon reaching Mutolere hospital. Jovia Ainembabazi 18, Marion Kobusingye 15 and a two year unnamed child were coming from their garden when they took shade under a tree where they were struck by lightning. The other two people who were struck by lightning resided in Bikokora village, Ntenko parish, Nyabwishenya subcounty. The dead were identified as Clever Ainomukama 20 and Ainomugisha 15. Kamara said there should be a study by scientists to come up with solutions that can be communicated to people.

    THE NEW BORN BABY INCUBATORS PROJECT US$ 48,400 The Rotary Club of Kampala North and its partners are proposing an Incubators Project for 12 strategic referral hospitals in Uganda to be implemented in the 2008/9 Rotary year . The Problem The Uganda Demographic Survey and Health Survey 2006 puts infant mortality at 76 out of every 1,000 births i.e. one in every 13 babies does not live to its 1 st birth day. The first month of life is associated with the highest risk to survival. The neonatal mortality rate is 29 for every 1,000 i.e. 1 in every 34 babies dies in the first month of life. Generally, 39% 1 of neonantal deaths are caused by premature birth. Low birth weight underlies 40-80% of new born deaths and low birth weight babies who survive have increased risk of developing diseases and mental disabilities. Neonantal mortality and morbidity is a general problem due to the appalling state of incubation facilities even in the major hospitals. The RCKN is proposing this project as a major intervention in the health sector to ensure child survival in line with the Rotary theme of “make dreams real’ for 2008/9. State of Incubation Facilities in Selected Hospitals Naggalama Hospital 2 is a mission hospital located in the heart or a rural peasant population of over 188,000 people in Nakifuma sub-county (about 30 Kms from Kampala). The hospital was started by Mother Kevin of the Little Sisters of St. Francis. The hospital serves as a referral hospital for the area and has 3 improvised wooden closets that serve as incubators.
