DESCRIPTORS English Instruction; Higher Education; Instructional Innovation; *Mass Media Role; Mathematics Instruction; *Popular Culture; Science Instruction; Secondary Education; Time IDENTIFIERS Deep Space 9; *Star Trek; Star Trek the Next Generation; Story Concepts ABSTRACT A teacher of reading across the curriculum uses stories, many based on the television show "Star Trek"or its derivatives "Star Trek: The Next Generation" (STNG) and "Deep Space 9," to illustrate educational theories and practice,. Theteacher began a discussion of the nature of language, meaning and the significance of literacy by discussing an episode of STNG entitled "Darmok" in which an alien race spoke only in metaphor. Humor is present in many episodes of "Star Trek," as wellas concepts like the power of fear. Cultural differences are explored in a number of episodes of STNG. The teacher uses "Star Trek"as an introduction to a lesson and as an impetus for story writing. One of the most enduring qualities of the three series is their focuson problem solving, which can serve as demonstrations for students. The series are also used for teaching the technique of role playing. Episodes of STNG and of "Deep Space 9" can be used to teach contentareas such as English, mathematics, history, physics, chemistry, and biology: "Clues" involves an examination ofspace and time; "Drumhead" involves a Joe McCarthy-like investigator; "Cause and Effect" involves a time loop; "Time's Arrow," involving backward timetravel and Mark Twain; "Emissary" deals with guilt, responsibility, and explaining the nature of time to an immortal-ace; and "The Forsaken" which involves a "shape-shifting" character. -

Women at Warp Episode 97: Citizenship and Immigration in Star Trek [WAW intro plays] Jarrah: Hi, and welcome to Women at Warp, a Roddenberry Star Trek podcast. Join us as our crew of four women Star Trek fans boldly go on our biweekly mission to explore our favorite franchise. My name's Jarrah, and thanks for tuning in. Today with us we have crew member Grace… Grace: Hey, everybody! Jarrah: And we also have two very special guests, who I will introduce and get them to tell you a bit about themselves, starting with Shashank Avvaru. Shashank: Hi! I'm not a woman but my mom is, so that's about the qualification I have to be on Women at Warp. This is very exciting! [laughter] Jarrah: Awesome! Well, we'll get you to tell us more about yourself a bit later, because there's more to you than that. But for now, our other guest is Michelle Zamanian. Michelle: Hi! Thank you for having me. Jarrah: You are very welcome. And so, I'll start with you, Michelle, can you tell us maybe a bit about yourself and how you got interested in Star Trek? Michelle: I just graduated with my MFA and I got into Star Trek when I was about 7 years old. I want to say that was around 90, 91. It was the first time I saw Star Trek and I fell instantly in love. It was like... exactly what I needed to see at that age, it was like a family coming together on the ship. -
Slings and Arrows 03: the Insolence of Office
Dedicated to “the next generation”- my nieces Jordan Teresa, Taylor Stephanie, and Madison Sophia The first time any man’s freedom is trodden on, we’re all damaged. - Captain Jean-Luc Picard, “The Drumhead” Rights! Rights! I’m sick to death of hearing about rights! - Commander Bruce Maddox, “The Measure of a Man” CHAPTER 1 “I hate you, Counselor.” Deanna Troi betrayed no outward reaction to this vitriolic outburst. It was, after all, part of her job, allowing herself to be the focus of her patients’ unguarded emotional releases, and then to help them recognize and redirect them in healthier ways. She had to admit, though, it was still jarring to hear such blunt invective from this particular patient. “Data, I know you don’t really mean that,” she told him in a quiet, soothing tone. Data’s expression almost instantly shifted from anger to regret. “You are correct; I do not.” He turned his head and looked up directly at her. “You are one of my dearest friends, Deanna. Please, forgive me.” Troi smiled kindly down at him where he lay on her couch. Normally, she preferred to conduct her sessions sitting face-to-face, in a more conversational manner. But Data had discovered this anachronistic arrangement in a Sigmund Freud holoprogram he’d consulted some years back, shortly after discovering his dream program, and it was the one he tended to favor. “Of course I forgive you, Data,” she assured him. “You know you are allowed to say anything you want here. But obviously, there must be something bothering you, for you to express yourself in such a way.” Data hesitated, and then slowly answered, “I do not wish to insult you, Counselor. -

FADE IN: 1 EXT. DESERT - DAY 1 Shimmering waves of heat. A flat unforgiving landscape stretches to infinity. A storm of dust gathers on the horizon, small at first, increasing in size as it rolls toward us. Hoofbeats fill the soundtrack. Just as the storm threatens to engulf us, A RIDER ON HORSEBACK emerges. Superimpose: NIMBUS III IN THE NEUTRAL ZONE ("THE PLANET OF GALACTIC PEACE") 2 CLOSER ANGLE - STRANGE HORSE AND RIDER 2 A twisted rhino horn juts from the snout of this odd creature. The Rider spurs the beast, driving it onward. His white robes flare out behind him like the wings of an avenging angel. He rides like a man possessed. CUT TO: 3 EXT. DRY LAKE BED - DAY 3 Camera pans an arid expanse of scorched earth. J'ONN, a ragged and malnourished homesteader of some alien race, toils beneath a blazing sun, his back to camera. He sinks an augering device into the ground, drilling in vain for water. There are many hundreds of holes in the earth around him. J'onn reacts to the clop of approaching hooves. He tenses, then whirls around clutching a crude home-made pipe gun. 4 J'ONN'S POV 4 Horse and rider thunder toward him. 5 ANGLE 5 J'onn raises his pipe gun and fires a warning shot. -

Small Scale Comparison Chart Size Analysis for Federation and Alien Ships of Scale 1 to 2
Small Scale Comparison Chart Size Analysis for federation and Alien Ships of Scale 1 to 2 This is my Scale estimates of the small ships in the Eaglemoss Small Starships picture (posted on the Wixiban website as of March 2021). The ships below are listed in rough order by horizontal order, starting from the top left of the page (so left-to-right, line-by-line, just like reading a page of text). My baseline estimates of Scales 1 through 3 are roughly based as follows: Ship Length Scale 0 to 19 meters 1 20 to 100 meters 2 100 to 240 meters 3 The largest Scale 2 ship I found in the published STA books is the Maquis Raider (length 68.5 meters) in the Klingon Corebook (p.185) and its length would seem to support these estimations. Ferengi Starship – 22nd C Captain’s Yacht “Calypso” Scale 2 Scale 2 55m in length 23m in length Starfleet Air Tram Type-11 Shuttlecraft Scale 1 Scale 1 12m in length 16m in length B’omar Patrol Ship Baxial (Neelix’s Freighter) Scale 1 Scale 1 14m in length 15m in length That’s a Tiny Freighter… UTS Aeon Even though the Delta Quadrant Scale 1 sourcebook says the Talaxian freighter is 6m in length Scale 2, that book assumes that the Baxial is similar in size to a runabout. This picture Dala’s “Delta Flyer” clearly shows that the Talaxian freighter is Scale 2 barely half the mass of a runabout, if that. 30m in length This plus its length of only 15 meters forces me to conclude that the Talaxian freighter is Romulan Shuttle only Scale 1 (judging just by size alone). -
