Elle jaillissait comme l'éclair et se répandait, limpide et tumultueuse à la fois, en images saisissantes, en formules d'airain, sur un rythme entraînant. Non seulement il a dicté d'innombrables lettres, dont certaines sont des chefs-d'œuvre de précision, de force et d'éclat, mais il a certainement publié de nombreux articles, insérés dans le Moniteur ou cachés dans d'autres gazettes françaises et même étrangères. On se concilie les bonnes grâces des divinités de la mer en se mettant sous leur protection. Pour repousser les esprits maléfiques, Egyptiens et Grecs peignent à l’avant de leurs navires un œil porte-bonheur. La figure de proue des navires phéniciens est souvent un cheval ; celle des bateaux vikings une tête de dragon ou de serpent. A l'époque moderne, le décor naval sert de signe de reconnaissance et révèle l’identité politique et culturelle de l’équipage du vaisseau. Outre, cette valeur informative, on attribue toujours à ces ornements une fonction prophylactique. Avant 1660, la décoration navale des vaisseaux de guerre est laissée à l'imagination des sculpteurs recrutés parmi les compagnons. L'artiste est à la fois le concepteur et le praticien. Le règne de Louis XIV : Un décor à la gloire du roi Secrétaire d’état à la Marine, Jean-Baptiste Colbert (1619-1683) entreprend une politique de centralisation culturelle. Dès 1668, il insère la décoration navale au sein de tous les autres arts du royaume qui sont susceptibles de mettre en exergue la personne royale. -

A Monster for Our Times: Reading Sade across the Centuries Matthew Bridge Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2011 © 2011 Matthew Bridge All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT A Monster for Our Times: Reading Sade across the Centuries Matthew Bridge This doctoral dissertation looks at several readings and interpretations of the works of the Marquis de Sade, from the eighteenth century to the present. Ever since he was imprisoned under the Old Regime following highly publicized instances of physical and sexual abuse, Sade has remained a controversial figure who has been both condemned as a dangerous criminal and celebrated as an icon for artistic freedom. The most enduring aspect of his legacy has been a vast collection of obscene publications, characterized by detailed descriptions of sexual torture and murder, along with philosophical diatribes that offer theoretical justifications for the atrocities. Not surprisingly, Sade’s works have been subject to censorship almost from the beginning, leading to the author’s imprisonment under Napoleon and to the eventual trials of his mid-twentieth-century publishers in France and Japan. The following pages examine the reception of Sade’s works in relation to the legal concept of obscenity, which provides a consistent framework for textual interpretation from the 1790s to the present. I begin with a prelude discussing the 1956 trial of Jean-Jacques Pauvert, in order to situate the remainder of the dissertation within the context of how readers approached a body of work as quintessentially obscene as that of Sade. -

Coming from a family of federalists and anti-clericals, he was active in the Federalist Youth before going over to anarchism following his reading of Godwin, Proudhon, Kropotkin and Bakunin and observation of the world around him. A bit of a globe-trotter (even in his prison experience, seeing the inside of nearly sixty prisons from the age of 18 onwards) he lived for a long time in Valencia and travelled Europe and the Americas (he was especially familiar with Italy and knew many of the Italian anarchists, like Malatesta, Borghi and Fabbri, being much impressed by Malatesta). Early in the century (1905) he was close to the Avenir group and by the time the First World War came around he was an anarchist of some prestige. In 1915 he attended the congress in El Ferrol (representing Solidaridad Obrera), in 1918 he was at the Anarchist Conference in Barcelona, was present at the International Labour Congress in Geneva and the sixth congress of the F.N.A. in Valencia (where he was outstanding for his vehemence and hard line). His presence at the La Comedia congress in 1919 has been described as crucial: he drafted the anarchist manifesto, was on the working party on propaganda and opposed the line taken by Quintanilla. In the ensuing years he was a leading representative of the most anarchist tendency (and from 1921 stood out on account of his condemnation of the dictatorship of the proletariat). -

At this juncture in the Gothic era, the city’s workshops constituted a highly active centre for the production of Haggadot, manuscripts that contain the ritual of the Passover meal, which were commissioned by families living in the Call (Jewish quarter) in Barcelona and in other Jewish communities. Jews and Christians alike worked on Haggadot and shared the same style and iconographic models. The Museu d’Història de Barcelona reunites in the exhibition Barcelona Haggadot, for the first time in more than six centuries, an extensive se- lection of these splendid works of the Catalan Gothic period that were dispersed around the world when the Jews were expelled. Until now, no single study has appeared, or indeed been published, charting the course of its development during the period in discussion. This thesis aims to fill this lacuna, not by offering an episodic account of its activities but by examining the precepts, perceptions and procedures that determined its conduct as it relates to la sûreté de l’état. Its objective, in other words, is to demonstrate how the pursuit and punishment of spies is not a simple cloak and dagger tale of hidden plots and secret agents but a fundamental question of national security. As this thesis will explain, the role that counter-espionage played is actually of central importance to our understanding of how the revolutionaries defended and securitized their embryonic state at a crucial juncture in its existence.
