2. Richard Mattingly (1710–1789) Richard Mattingly was born in 1710 to Richard and Hannah Tyler of in . Very little is known about his early life, apart from the fact he was to have a sister, Hannah who was born in 1720. Our next record is his marriage to Anna Winkworth on the 11th April 1737 in the village of Wootton St. Lawrence, seven miles to the south of Baughurst. Anna was one of three daughters, whose father, Robert was a member of a family that had long been established in the village. Richard and Anna were to spend their lives In Wootton St. Lawrence, where they were to bring up their four children - Robert ( 1738-1815), Anna (born 1748), Thomas ( 1750 - 1832) and Richard ( 1754 - 1830). All four children were to marry and have their own children. Richard Mattingly would have worked for the Bigg-Wither family, who owned most of the village and surrounding countryside. Their mansion was House with a large Park around it to the west of the village. They also owned the neighbouring estate known as “Tangier”. Richard was to die in 1789 and his wife, Anna in 1792 after spending their life In Wootton St. Lawrence, a village still relatively unchanged, apart from the loss of Manydown, which was demolished in 1965.

Richard Mattingly is shown in the Parish Records for Wootton St. Lawrence as marrying Anna Winckworth in 1737. The records reveal that she had two sisters, Maria and Susannah. The latter married William Wheeler, from in 1748. The Winckworth family had long lived in Wootton St. Lawrence and the 1664 Hearth Tax on the left shows a Nicholas Winckworth with three hearths and Thomas Winckworth with just one hearth. Anna Winkworth was born on the 24th January 1714 in the church records.

Manydown was the home of the Biggs-Wither family, situated near , a mile from Wortling and approximately 6 miles from Steventon. It was demolished in 1965 and is now the site of some farm buildings. It was while staying there in December 1802 that first accepted and then refused an offer of marriage from Harris Bigg-Wither.

Richard Mattingly is shown here marrying Mary Wateridge, in Wootton St. Lawrence in 1779. They were to have 7 children and remain in the village. Mary was the daughter of Robert and Maria Wateridge. There are a number of references to the family in the village One of the earliest is the 1664 Hearth Tax on the left which shows a John Wateridge with one hearth. 2a. Land Tax for 1798 Robert (1738 - 1815) and Richard Mattingly (1754-1830) mentioned as owning and renting property in the village of Wootton St. Lawrence in Hampshire. They were the sons of Richard Mattingly. The full list shows Lovelace Bigg Wither (1741 - 1813) Esq. whose family owned Manydown, and were Lords of the Manor as by far the largest landowners, with over 1500 acres, and may well have employed the Mattingly`s on their estate.
