Mill Valley Oral History Program a Collaboration Between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library
Mill Valley Oral History Program A collaboration between the Mill Valley Historical Society and the Mill Valley Public Library David Getz An Oral History Interview Conducted by Debra Schwartz in 2020 © 2020 by the Mill Valley Public Library TITLE: Oral History of David Getz INTERVIEWER: Debra Schwartz DESCRIPTION: Transcript, 60 pages INTERVIEW DATE: January 9, 2020 In this oral history, musician and artist David Getz discusses his life and musical career. Born in New York City in 1940, David grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn. David recounts how an interest in Native American cultures originally brought him to the drums and tells the story of how he acquired his first drum kit at the age of 15. David explains that as an adolescent he aspired to be an artist and consequently attended Cooper Union after graduating from high school. David recounts his decision to leave New York in 1960 and drive out to California, where he immediately enrolled at the San Francisco Art Institute and soon after started playing music with fellow artists. David explains how he became the drummer for Big Brother and the Holding Company in 1966 and reminisces about the legendary Monterey Pop Festival they performed at the following year. He shares numerous stories about Janis Joplin and speaks movingly about his grief upon hearing the news of her death. David discusses the various bands he played in after the dissolution of Big Brother and the Holding Company, as well as the many places he performed over the years in Marin County. He concludes his oral history with a discussion of his family: his daughters Alarza and Liz, both of whom are singer- songwriters, and his wife Joan Payne, an actress and singer. -

Obviously, these items would be a good gift idea for any occasion year-round, as well as a gift for yourself! We do not include many, if any at all, single CDs in the guide. Most everything contained will be multiple CD sets, DVDs, CD/DVD sets, books and the like. Of course, you can always look though our back issues to see what came out in 2017 (and prior years), but none of us would want to attempt to decide which CDs would be a fitting ad- dition to this guide. As with 2016, the year 2017 was a bit on the lean side as far as reviews go of box sets, books and DVDs - it appears tht the days of mass quantities of boxed sets are over - but we do have some to check out. These are in no particular order in terms of importance or release dates. -

INITIALS C.C. Liner Notes
Chris Connelly : INITIALS C.C. Out-takes, Rarities and Personal Favourites 1982-2002 vol.1 01. Detestimony – Fini Tribe: This was the “A” side of an EP called “Let the Tribe Grow,” written and recorded when the Fini Tribe was going through great musical changes. We had acquired an Ensoniq ‘Mirage’ sampling keyboard, and as was the same for a lot of bands at the time, it changed everything, opened up a lot of doors, and led us into some very uncharted waters. The actual piece was whittled down from a fifteen-minute opus we had written. I remember being in Philip Pinsky’s bedroom one night with John Vick. Philip’s then-roommate, Lindsay, gave us an old quarter-inch reel of tape he had. On it was a beautiful recording of the church bells you hear on the song; we sampled them and came up with the melody. The EP actually did better than any of us had anticipated and became a sort of hit in the Ibiza clubs at the very advent of the acid house/rave phenomenon. We actually went ahead and re-wrote/re- structured the song for the WaxTrax! Records release (“Make it Internal/Detestimony Revisited”) a couple of years later. 02. Mania – Murder Inc.: Certainly what I feel is the most compelling song on the one and only album released by Murder Inc. The band was basically Killing Joke, minus Jaz Coleman (Killing Joke’s singer), plus me, as well as the original drummer, Paul Fergusson, and newer drummer, Martin Atkins. The sessions took place at Pachyderm Studios in rural Minnesota during September of 1991. -

Joplin, Janis (1943-1970) by Teresa Theophano
Joplin, Janis (1943-1970) by Teresa Theophano Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com The name Janis Joplin is practically synonymous with the excesses epitomized by the counterculture of the 1960s: sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll, all of which Joplin took to extreme levels. As troubled as she was talented, Joplin has been portrayed in numerous articles, full-length biographies, and documentaries as everything from a reckless, sex-crazed party animal to a victimized, lost little girl who never believed she was lovable. The truth is likely somewhere in between--but what is clear is that Joplin's musical legacy lives on and crosses barriers of gender, race, and class. Joplin was born on January 19, 1943 in small, insular Port Arthur, Texas, where she grew up. She always stood out as a bright, creative misfit in her oil-refinery hometown. She stood out too in her rather conservative family, preferring to pursue visual art and music rather than fulfill her mother's expectations of her becoming a schoolteacher. Joplin reportedly relished the attention that gossip about her bad-girl image brought, but her status as a social outcast hurt her deeply and would remain with her throughout her short life. For a while Joplin attended Lamar State College of Technology and then the University of Texas at Austin, but she decided that school was not for her and never graduated. During her college years she began singing at the hootenannies of the day and at bars in the Austin, San Francisco, and Venice, California areas. -
Student Withdraws Complaint Fight Breaks out Between Theta CM, Job
FRIDAY Freshman Brian Lundy PARTAN DAILY becomes Spartan's leading receiver. Page 6 V 0L 99, No. 50 Published for San Jose State University since 1934 November 6, 1992 Student My achy-breaky back withdraws vi complaint Student cites lack of time BY KERRY PETERS Spartan Daily Stall Writer A complaint against the Campus Democrats alleging verbal and physical threats has been dropped. Marcia Holstrom, the student who filed the letter of complaint, decided to drop her charges. "It's just not worth it:' Holstrom said. "I don't have the time, and I don't have the energy to fight it:' The complaint, addressed to Dan Buerger, execu- tive assistant to Interim President J. Handel Evans, was filed last week after Holstrom interrupted a Campus Democrats press conference on Oct. 22 at Tower Quad. Holstrom said she interrupted the con- ference because she objected to the group's use of the university seal which she thought might lead people to believe SJSU was endorsing Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton for president. When Holstrom came forward at the event, sever- al members of the group hosting the event verbally attacked her, Holstrom said, and threatened to "take care of her later:' prompting her to file the complaint. However, members of the Campus Democrats and other people who participated in the event PATTI EAGAN SPARTAN DAILY denied Holstrom's charges. Carol Sullivan, In her step training class, pushes her students to the limit every Tuesday and Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the Spartan Complex. Holstrom said that after talking to Phil Sanders, Step training is a type of aerobics that emphasizes a cardiovascular workout and muscle toning without the stress to the joints. -
Liverillen 06
