Other corrections are Captain/Coach of 61/62 team was Milton Lidgard Other Titles Year Grade Captain 2012/13 MWCA T20 Nirav Patel 2011/12 MWCA T20 Tom Carden 5 PRESIDENT’S REPORT The 58th season of cricket on the Plateau is a worthy edition for the Club’s annals, continuing the diversity of activity, off-field club development and on-field success established over the past decade and a half. The retention of both the Junior and Senior Club Championships reflects the strong performances put in by our playing squads this season. Our under 13, 14 and 15 squads won junior titles, our 6th Grade development squad claimed its fourth successive premiership and our senior T20 team went back to back after defeating the highly fancied Manly Grade in another memorable Grand Final. Without a premiership to show for their outstanding efforts, our under 16/18s were beaten on the last ball of the season, and our First Grade squad made the Grand Final. The T20 Grand Final is worthy of special mention for a number of reasons. CPCC’s epic victory over the Manly Grade Club at Griffith Park was part of the first live broadcast of local cricket thanks to Northern Beaches Radio. It was quite a novelty to be at home doing the chores during the earlier ‘Plate’ final hearing familiar names and listening to their exploits being analysed along with ball by ball description of the action. Thanks to Tom Carden, we could also stay up to date with the progress of our two senior Grand Final teams in March via the internet as Tom ran an almost ball by ball commentary blog from Nolans on the website. With live scoring and mobile connection we look forward to enjoying club cricket from a completely new angle. Back to the T20, and our victory was also ironic in that the highly fancied Manly Grade team comprised a number of Plateau Juniors including Sam Gainsford, James Boyer, Ash Virdi, James Trickey and Matt Cole. The loss aside, it was great to see these guys doing so well in their cricket.

    Charle s Kelleway (188 6 - 1944) Australia n Cricketer (1910/11 - 1928/29) NS W Cricketer (1907/0 8 - 1928/29) • Born in Lismore on 25 April 1886. • Right-hand bat and right-arm fast-medium bowler. • North Coastal Cricket Zone’s first Australian capped player. He played 26 test matches, and 132 first class matches. • He was the original captain of the AIF team that played matches in England after the end of World War I. • In 26 tests he scored 1422 runs at 37.42 with three centuries and six half-centuries, and he took 52 wickets at 32.36 with a best of 5-33. • He was the first of just four Australians to score a century (114) and take five wickets in an innings (5/33) in the same test. He did this against South Africa in the Triangular Test series in England in 1912. Only Jack Gregory, Keith Miller and Richie Benaud have duplicated his feat for Australia. • He is the only player to play test cricket with both Victor Trumper and Don Bradman. • In 132 first-class matches he scored 6389 runs at 35.10 with 15 centuries and 28 half-centuries. With the ball, he took 339 wickets at 26.33 with 10 five wicket performances. Amazingly, he bowled almost half (164) of these. He bowled more than half (111) of his victims for New South Wales. • In 57 first-class matches for New South Wales he scored 3031 runs at 37.88 with 10 centuries and 11 half-centuries. He took 215 wickets at 23.90 with seven five-wicket performances, three of these being seven wicket hauls, with a best of 7-39.

When he played for Australia, Clem Hill, Monty Noble, Syd Gregory and Warwick Armstrong were batsmen with him. Splendid as the cricket of these men might be, day after day, whenever Trumper got out the light seemed to go for a while from an Australian innings. The eagle is gone and now-crows and daws. We make an artist’s immortality by thinking upon and loving his work, Trumper was an artist cricketer; let him live again in the mouths of men whenever Test matches are in action. Since he accomplished some of his greatest innings in this land, English cricket owes much to his ghost…” “The Summer Game”, Sir Neville Cardus, 1929. He was Australia’s greatest batsman of the “Golden Age of Cricket” and like Sir Donald Bradman during the Great Depression years, a national hero to Australians during a time of severe economic hardship at the close of the Nineteenth century. He died tragically at the age of just 37 years in 1915, while his homeland was locked in deadly conflict at Gallipoli and the Western front. All Australia mourned. Some of his greatest accolades came from English writers. Below, a poignant entry in the death registers of New South Wales for 1915, recording the death of Victor Trumper, from “chronic parenchymatous nephritis” and “uraemic convulsions”.

I say „we‟ as this club is all of us and well done to everybody past and present - what an achievement! Deserved congratulations must go to everybody who has made this rare milestone possible, including the 200 plus players who have shown the Cavaliers spirit, and everyone who has played an often unsung, but priceless part „behind the scenes‟, in helping to run this great club. Part of our anniversary celebrations is the launching of this on-line history. We have had our share of memorable moments and, like all sports clubs both professional and strictly amateur, like ourselves, these have included many „highs‟ and, of course, some „lows‟ as well. However, as we embark upon celebrating this proud achievement, I would like to reflect, very briefly, on the past and look forward to the future. The club began in 1978 as a group of employees from various Post Office sections in different parts of Cardiff. That group was small and often had to overcome challenging difficulties, such as finding money to pay for kit, raising a full team, trying to stay competitive and trying to maintain enthusiasm, often in the face of regular defeats, but all these difficult hurdles were overcome.

    VICTOR TRUMPER (1877-1915) 88. THE BELDAM PHOTOGRAVURE This photogravure by George Beldam was published by the Swan Electric Engraving Company in 1905 but is based on a photograph taken at The Oval during the 1902 tour. It is surely the ultimate iconic image in cricket, rivaling even the face and beard of WG Grace. This is a fine example, printed on thick art paper with generous margins (image size 38cm x 30cm), framed and glazed in a period vintage frame and signed clearly by Trumper. The photogravure process was the pinnacle of techniques for fine art reproduction of a photograph. £1400 31 1 VICTOR TRUMPER’S LAST BAT Victor Trumper is arguably the most magical name in the history of Australian cricket. Even Bradman does not attract the awe and reverence reserved for the man who Archie MacLaren described in these words: “Myself, I was considered out of a good stable. They talked of my grand manner. Well, compared to Victor, I was an honest selling plater in the company of a Derby thoroughbred.” This Ashes year of 2015 sees not only a new breed of dashing Australian batsmen visit our cricket fields but also marks the hundredth anniversary since Trumper died at the heartrendingly early age of 37. Why was Trumper idolized so much at the time and why is he still remembered with such affection to this day? His batting, of course, was the core but it was not the weight of runs or size of his average that instilled such passions. Without being too trite, it was simply “the way he played the game”.

Inc The Fathers of Manly Junior Cricket – Jim Randall, Les Gwynne and George Lowe – who commenced coaching classes for juniors aged between 10 and 16 in October 1933. These classes were held at Manly Oval and continued through to the 1950’s when the Manly junior Saturday morning competition was commenced.
