THE MISANTHROPE by Moliere THE AUTHOR Moliere was the pen name of Jean-Baptiste Poquelin (1622-1673), generally considered the greatest French comic playwright of all time. His father was one of eight court upholsterers to Louis XIV, and thus the young man had access to the best education of the day, studying under the Jesuits at the College of Claremont. His mother died when he was twelve, his stepmother three years later. In early life, he enjoyed ridiculing the courtiers among whom he often spent his time; his skill at mimicry bore fruit in later years when he took to the stage. Despite inheriting his father’s position at court, he chose at the age of 21 to pursue a life in the theater. He had fallen in love with a young actress named Madeleine Bejart who became his mistress (he later married her daughter, and scandal-mongers spread the false rumor that she was his own child), and the two of them, along with a few other aspiring thespians, formed a theatrical troupe in 1643. At this point Poquelin adopted the stage name of Moliere in order to spare his family the embarrassment of having an actor in the clan. The troupe gained some attention for its early work, but failed miserably when they tried to charge admission for their shows; the company folded in 1645. Shortly thereafter he and Madeleine and their friends decided to tour the countryside. For the next fourteen years, they toured rural France, sharpening their skills and gaining a solid reputation. It was during this time that Moliere began to write for the troupe. -

Volume III, Issue VI, August 2015 – ISSN 2321-7065 A Study of Moliere’s The Miser within the Apparatus of Northrop Frye’s Theory of Modes Mrs. Neha Singh Ramveer Assistant professor G.L Bajaj College of Technology and Management New Delhi The prolific playwrights whose names are associated with comedy are Aristophanes, Johnson, Menander, Moliere etc. These are the men of innovative ideas who contributed a lot in the treasure of English literature. Comedy actually flourished at Athens by Aristophanes who is also considered as the „Father‟ of comedy. His comedies are known to the world as the Old Comedy. After its declination when the social order moved towards a new phase, the New Comedy came into existence. The name associated with the New Comedy was Menander. In the comedies of Menander, the element of fantastic lyric was vanished and extravagant characters like the birds, the frogs which were popular at the time of Aristophanes were abandoned and also imaginary characters were lost its importance. Instead of this the use of realistic plots came into existence. “Menander‟s play- world points forward towards more than one kind of later comic endeavour; it may be associated with the comedy of social manners which flourished in the seventeenth century, and it may also be seen to have connexions with the Elizabethan comedy of romance.” (1668: 16) The seventeenth century can be regarded as the significant time period in the history of literature. In this period itself the France started rising in terms of power and wealth under the leadership of King Louis XIII. -

Gaines In an age obsessed with rank and preoccupied with social position, in which me n were sed ulous in their obedience to the imperious de mands of a rigid etiquette and elaborate ceremonials, and in which ambitious and worldly me n saw correct behavior as the means, and advancement and preference as the goal, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin assumed the role of jocular critic of behavioral abuse. James E Gaines has undertaken a sociocritical study that attempts to understand how the liter ary forms of Molieres plays relate to the social forms of the early modern period. He contends that the comedies represent an imaginary net work of social relationships remarkably homolo gous to the world view of the literate French public during the reign of Louis Xiy and that it is possible both to identify the place in society of characters in Moliere's plays through reference to an index of social indicators and to ascertain whether or not the patterns of behavior of those individuals are consistent with the norms gov erning the classes to which they belong—norms that Gaines has been able to reconstruct on the basis of seventeenth-century social theory and from historical evidence. The audience's early identification of a dra matic character's status in society from clues planted by the dramatist was of crucial impor tance to the success of Molieres comedies; for his ability to deal effectively with a very wide range of social subjects depended on a rapid exposition of just what places his characters oc cupied in the intricate and complex network of social relationships. -

Moliere : The Miser Biographical note Molière {mohl-yair'}, whose real name was Jean Baptiste Poquelin, composed 12 of the most durable and penetratingly satirical full-length comedies of all time, some in rhyming verse, some in prose, as well as six shorter farces and comedies. As a comic dramatist he ranks with such other distinctive masters of the genre as Aristophanes, Plautus, and George Bernard Shaw. He was also the leading French comic actor, stage director, and dramatic theoretician of the 17th century. In a theatrical period, the early baroque, dominated by the formal neoclassical tragedies of Pierre and Thomas Corneille, and Racine, Molière affirmed the potency of comedy as a serious, flexible art form. He was born on Jan. 15, 1622, to Marie and Jean Poquelin; his father was a Parisian furniture merchant and upholsterer to the king. -

The Miser – Actor Packet Written and Compiled by Dr. Osborne’s Dramaturgy Class Edited by Dr. Osborne Moliére is a national icon. The “god of laughter.” The Shakespeare of France. The man who wrote so well that French was (and is!) referred to as the “language of Moliére.” He is synonymous with the theatrical “classic” and often the model of farce, and has even inspired his own term for Moliére scholars – the Moliéristes. Yet very little is known of the man himself – only a few documents remain that even have his signature on them. Not surprisingly, rumors abound. We know that he was a writer, actor, and manager, and that Louis XIV became his patron. He married the much-younger Armande Béjart, daughter of Madeleine Béjart, and possibly his own daughter as well. He also died suddenly and without access to a priest; as an excommunicated actor who had no time to recant on his deathbed, this led to all sorts of problems with his burial. Ultimately the King had to register his wish that Moliére be buried in consecrated ground, so the Catholic Church relented. They allowed the burial, but only at night, only with two priests present, and without ceremony. Yet the story does not end there. Indeed, Moliére rose from the grave during the French Revolution. Collectors announced that they possessed Moliére’s tooth and one vertebra, and his jawbone was allegedly put on display at the Museum of French Antiquities in 1860. Even stranger, rumor has it that Moliére revolutionaries exhumed the skeletons of Moliére and the famous poet, La Fontaine, with the intention of grinding up portions of their skeletons so they could be made into a porcelain cup from which “one could drink patriotically to the Republic.”1 If nothing else, the rumors prove that Moliére and his work have become the stuff of legend in France. -

Fully aware of his predecessors - classical theater, Shakespeare, Italian commedia dell’arte - he pointed his long and probing fnger at the absurdities of government and the life of the rich. He made his audiences laugh at the excesses of Louis XIV (the Sun King) who drained the country’s coffers while building Versailles and mounting wars against his neighbors. He nailed those human weakness- es that were as evident and fagrant then as they are now: hypocrisy, self- interest, avarice, authoritarianism. In The Miser we fnd a man in love not just with his wealth but with money itself, the gold and silver coins that he hides away in his ‘little’ casket. Harp- agon, played originally by Molière himself, is a man whose abuse of his pow- er affects everyone he comes into contact with, including his two children, the galant Cléante and the secretive Élise. With the help of the eternal grifter Frosine, Harpagon plans to marry Marianne, a girl more than forty years his junior (ah, plus ça change ), not knowing that his son Cléante also plans to mar- ry her. -
