Mission Stations
Mission Stations The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM), based in Boston, was founded in 1810, the first organized missionary society in the US. One hundred years later, the Board was responsible for 102-mission stations and a missionary staff of 600 in India, Ceylon, West Central Africa (Angola), South Africa and Rhodesia, Turkey, China, Japan, Micronesia, Hawaiʻi, the Philippines, North American native American tribes, and the "Papal lands" of Mexico, Spain and Austria. On October 23, 1819, the Pioneer Company of ABCFM missionaries set sail on the Thaddeus to establish the Sandwich Islands Mission (now known as Hawai‘i). Over the course of a little over 40-years (1820- 1863 - the “Missionary Period”), about 180-men and women in twelve Companies served in Hawaiʻi to carry out the mission of the ABCFM in the Hawaiian Islands. One of the earliest efforts of the missionaries, who arrived in 1820, was the identification and selection of important communities (generally near ports and aliʻi residences) as “Stations” for the regional church and school centers across the Hawaiian Islands. As an example, in June 1823, William Ellis joined American Missionaries Asa Thurston, Artemas Bishop and Joseph Goodrich on a tour of the island of Hawaiʻi to investigate suitable sites for mission stations. On O‘ahu, locations at Honolulu (Kawaiahaʻo), Kāne’ohe, Waialua, Waiʻanae and ‘Ewa served as the bases for outreach work on the island. By 1850, eighteen mission stations had been established; six on Hawaiʻi, four on Maui, four on Oʻahu, three on Kauai and one on Molokai. Meeting houses were constructed at the stations, as well as throughout the district. -

P. 2 1 Digit zed by Google \ PREFACE AT the request of the Board of Education, I have .fi. endeavored to write a simple and concise history of the Hawaiian people, which, it is hoped, may be useful to the teachers and higher classes in our schools. As there is, however, no book in existence that covers the whole ground, and as the earlier histories are entirely out of print, it has been deemed best to prepare not merely a school-book, but a history for the benefit of the general public. This book has been written in the intervals of a labo rious occupation, from the stand-point of a patriotic Hawaiian, for the young people of this country rather than for foreign readers. This fact will account for its local coloring, and for the prominence given to certain topics of local interest. Especial pains have been taken to supply the want of a correct account of the ancient civil polity and religion of the Hawaiian race. This history is not merely a compilation. It is based upon a careful study of the original authorities, the writer having had the use of the principal existing collections of Hawaiian manuscripts, and having examined the early archives of the government, as well as nearly all the existing materials in print. -

Over the past several months I have met with parish leaders in each of our nine vicariates to receive input on the renewal of our diocesan pasto- ral plan. I am grateful to all who shared their insights so that we can be good stewards of the resources of time, talent, and treasure that the Lord has entrusted to us for his mission. I am particularly grateful to James Walsh, Director of Pastoral Planning, for his great work on the develop- ment of this pastoral plan. Those who are familiar with our last pastoral plan “The Roadmap for Our Mission” will notice similarities between this current plan and the “Roadmap.” While the priorities may be similar, I want this pastoral plan to help us all direct our attention outward, and not simply to focus on the internal structures and programs of our diocese and parishes. This is in keeping with the mandate of Jesus himself: “Go, therefore, and make dis- ciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have com- manded you. -

He Ahu Mo‘olelo: E Ho‘okahua i ka Paepae Mo‘olelo Palapala Hawai‘i A Cairn of Stories: Establishing a Foundation of Hawaiian Literature ku‘ualoha ho‘omanawanui ‘Ōlelo Hō‘ulu‘ulu / Summary “What is mo‘olelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian literature)?”1 This essay seeks to answer this and related questions. It articulates a foundation of mo‘olelo Hawai‘i in the twenty-first century as constructed from a long, rich history of oral tradition, performance, and writ- ing, in ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i (Hawaiian language), ‘ōlelo Pelekānia (English), and ‘ōlelo pa‘i‘ai (Hawai‘i Creole English, HCE, or “pidgin”). This essay maps the mo‘okū‘auhau (gene- alogy) of mo‘olelo Hawai‘i in its current form as a contemporized (post-eighteenth cen- tury) cultural practice resulting from the longer-standing tradition of haku (composing, including strictly oral compositions) and kākau (imprinting, writing). Beginning in the 1830s, kākau and pa‘i (printing) were composed from ‘ike Hawai‘i (Hawaiian knowl- edge) passed down mai ka pō mai (from the ancient past), reflecting innovations in the recording and transmission of ‘ike Hawai‘i, including mo‘olelo (narratives, stories, histories). ‘Ōlelo Mua / Introduction When I entered the PhD program in English at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 1997, a professor stopped me in the hall one day. “What is there to possibly study in Hawaiian literature? Is that even a ‘thing’?” she inquired. While incensed by such ignorance, I politely smiled and replied, “Why, the same thing you do with English literature—periods, genres, and authors.” She seemed satisfied with my response, but also befuddled. -

Ordination of the Missionaries “Visiting the Foreign Mission school, during a vacation of the Theological Seminary, at Andover, and feeling a new impulse to become a pioneer in the enterprise of spreading the Gospel in that dark portion of the Pacific Isles, I freely offered myself to the American Board for that purpose, and was accepted by their Prudential Committee, in the summer of 1819; and soon after, Mr. Thurston, my class-mate, offered himself for the same work, and was likewise readily accepted.” (Hiram Bingham) “We completed our course of Theological studies, at Andover, Massachusetts, in September, 1819. ʻōpūkahaʻia, Was at the Age of About Ten; Both His Parents Were Slain Before His Eyes
ʻŌpūkahaʻia The Inspiration for the Hawaiian Mission Hostilities of Kamehameha’s conquest on Hawai‘i Island supposedly ended with the death of Keōua at Kawaihae Harbor in early-1792 and the placement of the vanquished chief’s body at Puʻukoholā Heiau at Kawaihae. The island was under the rule of Kamehameha. However, after a short time, another chief entered into a power dispute with Kamehameha; his name was Nāmakehā. In 1795, Kamehameha asked Nāmakehā, who lived in Kaʻū, Hawai‘i, for help in fighting Kalanikūpule and his Maui forces on O‘ahu, but Nāmakehā ignored the invitation. Instead, he opted to rebel against Kamehameha by tending to his enemies in Kaʻū, Puna and Hilo on Hawai‘i Island. Hostilities erupted between the two in 1796. The battle took place at Hilo. Kamehameha defeated Nāmakehā; his warriors next turned their rage upon the villages and families of the vanquished. The alarm was given of their approach. A family, who had supported Nāmakehā, the father (Ke‘au) taking his wife (Kamohoʻula) and two children fled to the mountains. There he concealed himself for several days with his family in a cave. (Brumaghim) The warriors found the family and killed the adults. A survivor, a son, ʻŌpūkahaʻia, was at the age of about ten; both his parents were slain before his eyes. The only surviving member of the family, besides himself, was an infant brother he hoped to save from the fate of his parents, and carried him on his back and fled from the enemy. But he was pursued, and his little brother, while on his back, was killed by a spear from the enemy. -

E. Maude’s 1968 essay.1 In the late eighteenth century, as outsider- indigenous maritime relations intensified and convicts began to escape from the British penal colony in Australia, increasing numbers of ship deserters and castaways arrived on island beaches. To survive, they had to adapt and make themselves useful to their hosts, usually by acting as cultural mediators between ship and shore. Yet because foreign vessels often depended on recruiting native seamen to replace lost crew, Pacific Islander sailors-turned-beachcombers also participated in this accul- turation process. In fact, Maude suggested that European ships proba- bly stranded more natives on strange beaches than white expatriates, who were simply better documented. “This widespread inter-group mixing together of island peoples in early post-contact times is a factor of considerable importance to the anthropologist,” he wrote, “but the problems arising from intra-regional cross-cultural contact are not nec- essarily identical and require separate discussion.”2 That separate treat- ment, if justified, is long overdue. This article delves into the making of the Bible in Hawaiian. The American ministers who first translated the ancient texts from Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek are identified, as well as the Hawaiian chiefs and advisors who took their initial and often clumsy drafts and turned them into chiefly Hawaiian.
