PRESS RELEASE

A sea of Santas will be sure to cause a storm in two Cornish towns this December as Hospice Care launch their first ever Santa Fun Runs in on Saturday 4 th December and Falmouth on Saturday 11 th December. The charity is calling out to those Cornish folk up for some festive fun to get involved – men and women, boys and girls, young and old – everyone is welcome to join the Christmas fundraiser. Entrants can choose to run, jog or walk around the route with a choice of two distances at both locations. “Everyone is really excited about the Santa Runs, it is going to be a fabulously festive event with lots of fun and merriment – I’m sure the sight of hundreds of Santas running through the streets is going to cause quite a stir!" said Karen Holman, Events Team Leader for Cornwall Hospice Care. There will be festive music at the start, mince pies and a warm drink to greet the runners when they finish. Every entrant will receive a free Santa suit, with Santa hats for children, so there really will be a sea of Santas by the seaside - a sure way to get into the Christmas spirit and to help raise some vital funds for the charity which provides adult hospice care across Cornwall. Radio Cornwall is supporting the charity runs not only by entering teams of runners but also with two of their well loved presenters setting the jolly Santas on their way – James Churchfield at the Padstow event and Laurence Reed in Falmouth. Anyone interested in joining one of the Cornwall Hospice Care Santa Fun Runs as a runner or as a volunteer is asked to get in touch with Karen on 01726 66869 or email [email protected]

When all the land, All covered in sand, Is covered in sand, Take your bucket and spade, And you think you oughter And carefully wade, Move, ‘cause the water, To where seaweed sprawls, Is rolling towards, Over rock pools, The children’s surfboards, There you try and grab, Then you hear this song, An enormous crab, Come jingling along, When it bites your finger, And you can see the man, You definitely don’t linger, In the ice cream van, Then your unstable mound, When you bury your Dad, Tumbles to the ground, He gets really mad, As the rain is starting, But you think he looks grand, And all are departing!

Polgooth Methodist Church

I am writing this on Easter Monday. Yesterday in church we celebrated the greatest event in the Christian calendar and, began our service with the hymn ‘Jesus, Christ is risen today’. One of the saddest things in our service is that so many people live without hope. Yet all those PENGELLY PLANT CENTRE years ago God raised Jesus to life – death was conquered. The death of Jesus on that first Good Friday followed by his resurrection a few days later means that hope is available to everyone. That hope manifests itself in a fulfilled life for now and certainly for the future. Our Easter celebration started on Palm Sunday with everyone being given a Palm cross. On Good Friday we met together for a time of reflection and communion. The Easter Sunday celebration took the form of All Age Worship with children, parents and grandparents attending. We examined the affect on our lives today of those first Easter events wit ha series Hewaswater, St Austell of questions, Why? What? How? and Who? This was aided by children singing, playing percussion instruments, Sharon, Rhys, Lucy and Callum performing a puppet sketch and Lucy dancing. ‘Celebration’ was definitely the right word for that event. Cornwall. PL26 7JG Another event, which attracted all ages to the church took place on a Friday evening, 26 th February. It seemed quite fitting that we called it ‘Holy Commotion’ as at times there was a lot of noise from the singing, led by guitar, and percussion instruments. The evening was led by Tel: 01726 883757 Mr Andrew Nicholson who is the Cornwall Methodist District Youth Enabler. We sat around PURE PLEASURE tables, sang, prayed, made paper airplanes and flew them and generally enjoyed worship. We are now looking forward to other special events due to take place in the next few months. Over the weekend of 7 th , 8 th and 9 th May we have a visit from our friend Rev.David Cole of Exeter. On the Friday evening David will be speaking to the children’s and Livewires Groups. On the Saturday morning he will be speaking at the Men’s Breakfast at St Mewan Parish Church Hall and then on Sunday 9 th May leading our All Age Worship. In 1983 our original church building was sold and work began on renovating the building we are now using. This work was completed in 1985 and so this year we have a 25 th Anniversary R. A. HAWKE & CO celebration. This will take place over the weekend of the 9 th , 10 th and 11 th July. Matthew Shepherd of Radio Cornwall has very kindly agreed to do another concert for us and this will be in the Village Hall on the Friday evening. On Saturday 10 th July there will be a Village Fete with stalls, children’s sports, cream teas, BBQ etc. We also welcome to this event Rev. Steve Anthracite, Coal and all solid Fuels. A Place To Eat

Sams on the Beach Lifeboat Café Polkerris Tel:- 01726 812255

Sams in is a bistro style, mainly fish, restaurant which does not take bookings so it really is first come, first to get a table!! Some time ago they opened Sams on the Beach at Polkerris and , yes, you can book and you really need to! The restaurant is gaining quite a reputation locally and the evening we visited we could only have 6 p.m. or 9 p.m.and that was for a Wednesday evening at the end of September booked a week previously!! Polkerris is a 20 minute drive from Polgooth. Follow the signs for Fowey, turn right to Polkerris Beach and Menabilly then right again signposted Polkerris Beach, this is a very narrow lane. The car park is on the right hand side and is a pay and display although after 6 p.m.it is free. A few minutes walk, downhill, will see you almost on the beach and Sams is in the old lifeboat house. Just remember you will have to walk back up to the car park although it isn’t very steep This lane can be rather wet in winter and I would advise you take a torch for the Tregongeeves Farm Cottages and River Valley Holiday Park journey back as there are no street lights. The restaurant is small, with wooden and cobbled floors, wooden Offer 4 and 5* accommodation set within 5 minutes of furniture and a big wood burning oven, the wood is sourced from the Polgooth village. POLGOOTH CHURCH

On Saturday 10 th July a village fete was held on and around the playing field. This was arranged by The Church as part of their 25 th anniversary celebrations. The fete was opened by our Minister Rev. J. Kendall and a guest was Rev. S. Wild, Chairman of the District. The weather stayed fine for us and a good time was had by all. There were cream teas, various stalls selling wares, and activities for the children together with a barbeque. A fire engine attended as an extra attraction. A big thank you to all who attended. Almost £400 was raised towards church funds.

Please report neglected footpaths to your local Countryside Officer

While we all understand the lack of funds for maintenance at this time, if we allow our rural public footpaths to be neglected with unsafe surfaces they will become unused and eventually lost to us and our descendants. Public rights of way, including footpaths, bridleways and byways are the responsibility of the local highway authority; that being the county or unitary authority for the area.

Most local authorities have rights of way departments who should maintain the safety aspects of the paths. This maintenance should include upkeep, signing and improving rights of way within their area of jurisdiction. Problems with public rights of way, such as obstruction, safety issues or signage should be reported to the Council on web page. www.cornwall.gov.uk/default.aspx?page=12919

INTRODUCING ALEX AND TANYA WILLIAMS Comacc Ltd THE NEW TENANTS OF THE POLGOOTH INN 34 St Pirans Close

St Austell

Tanya is Cornish through and through. She was born at Treliske Hospital and lived in St. Cornwall Stephens where her family still reside. Alex lived in Hampshire for most of his life and their paths crossed at college in Torquay PL25 3TF where they were both studying for a hotel and catering qualification. To gain experience in the Compass trade and save some money they became assistant managers with Morlands Brewery (Old Accounting Speckled Hen) and when their bank accounts were full spent 2 years travelling the world. They moved back to Cornwall in 2000 when they became managers of The Oyster Catcher at Tel: 01726 71507 Polzeath, then being the youngest managers the brewery had ever employed. 2002 saw them marry and in 2004 they moved again to The Victoria Inn at Roche where their • Fax: 01726 71507 eldest daughter, Brooke, was born.. They needed a • family home and wanted some land in a village location so what could be better then The Taxation Specialists Polgooth Inn. • Business Advice and Planning Alex and Tanya became landlord and landlady, with Ben Bryant, as their manager, on the 1 st September 2010. When I talked to them they had been in post for approx. 4 weeks and work on the pub was still in progress. Changing from an adult only environment to a family home with 2 small children and a dog called Cookie required some alterations including an upstairs kitchen “cooking is my relaxation” said Tanya and I don’t think she meant the pub kitchen!! Some outside areas also needed changing to make them safe for their children and this will all take time. This young family are determined to become part of Polgooth , not only with the pub but are interested in participating in village events as much as their busy lives will allow. Subtle changes are already being seen. The menu has changed slightly. There are now 3 sizes of Sunday lunch and some menu dishes, young, young at heart and normal. All the previous staff remain including the chefs so the quality of cooking will keep its high standard and to make things more progressive the land above the car park will become a kitchen garden where vegetables and herbs for the pub kitchen will be grown. May we take this opportunity of wishing Alex, Tanya, Brooke, Erin, Ben their manager and Cookie the dog a warm welcome to Polgooth and may the relationship, between pub and village, prosper for many years.
