Pesach’ke Burstein, the dancing-singing comedian, was born in a small Jewish town in Poland in the late 19th century. Drawn to the disreputable profession of komediant (actor), fourteen-year old Pesach’ke ran away from home to join a traveling troupe of Jewish actors - from that day on, the theater became his life. Armed with an engaging ability to whistle, young Pesach’ke arrived in New York in 1924 and quickly became a leading figure in the Golden Era of Yiddish theater. On stage, he met and fell in love with sixteen-year old rising star Lillian Lux. The couple would later marry and together embark on a triumphant acting tour of South America and Europe, only to narrowly escape on the last boat out of Poland in 1939. After the war, the Bursteins became the parents of twins, Mike and Susan, who before long were given the stage names Motele and Zisele. By the age of seven, the two children were appearing regularly on the stage, accompanying their parents as they wandered around the globe in search of the dwindling Jewish communities of a decimated and dying Yiddish culture. -

In This Issue...Association for Jewish Theatre
A Message from the President What is Jewish Theatre? association This question has arisen at every AJT Conference I have attended in the for jewish past and I hope it continues to come up at every conference I theatre attend in the future. For our resident scholar and fall 2 0 0 5 conference presenter Ellen Schiff, Jewish Theatre (in America) is, in part, theatre, that encompasses “the competing impulses” of what it means to be a Jew in this country. For conference presenter Isaiah Sheffer, playwright and Founding Artistic Director of Symphony Space, Jewish Theatre is “stuff with LIFE.” That which can be summed up with a big L’Chaim! “More Life!” For conference speaker Ben Cameron, Executive Director of TCG, Jewish Theatre is in a sub-category of niche theatres - those whose productions are inspired at their origin by a specific community. Cameron went on to let us know that as niche 2005 ASSOCIATION FOR JEWISH THEATRE EXECUTIVE theatres, we are the current beneficiaries of a new audience trend, which sees theatregoers flocking to theatres at President • Mira Hirsch [email protected] extreme ends of the theatre spectrum – attending either big Vice-President • Kathleen Sitzer [email protected] commercial productions or smaller niche productions.
