Abstract The Robert and Molly Freedman Jewish Sound Archive aims to collect, preserve, and promote musical and spoken-word recordings of the Jewish people. This finding aid represents the Archive's materials on Digital Video Disc (DVD). - Page 3 - Robert and Molly Freedman Jewish Sound Archive DVD collection Cite as: Robert and Molly Freedman Jewish Sound Archive DVD collection, Kislak Center for Special Collections, Rare Books and Manuscripts, University of Pennsylvania Biography/History The Robert and Molly Freedman Jewish Sound Archive is located in Room 453 of the Van Pelt-Dietrich Library Center at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Archive was founded by Bob and Molly Freedman, its current curators. The Freedmans began collecting recordings of Jewish music early in their marriage and continue to build the collection by acquiring recordings wherever they travel. Sometime in the middle or late 1970s (the cusp of the “klezmer revival”), researchers began to visit the Freedman’s home in Philadelphia. Later Bob Freedman was asked to bring some of the music to a Jewish folklore class at the University of Pennsylvania, which subsequently developed into an annual visit by the Yiddish language classes to the Freedman’s apartment. In 1981, Bob Freedman bought his first computer and began to list the recordings. He subsequently developed the first Yiddish font for screen display and printer, and over the years developed a database of recordings. Eventually, the collection outgrew the space available in the Freedman home and in 1996 it was donated to the University of Pennsylvania, where it continues to grow. Scope and Contents Historically, "Jewish music" has been notoriously difficult to define. For the purposes of the Freedman Jewish Sound Archive, Jewish music may include all genres of music produced by the Jewish people throughout the diaspora. This may include: Israeli music including jazz, rock, and pop; Jewish song in Yiddish, Hebrew, Ladino, or any number of diasporic languages; Instrumental music, including klezmer and classical music; Folk music from many countries and geographic regions; Theater music including Tin Pan Alley and the Broadway musical; Music of the holocaust; Music with Jewish literary origins; Religious music, including Chassidic and cantorial liturgical music; Music representing the Ashkenazi, Sephardi, or "Oriental" traditions of Judaism; Jewish music heavily influenced by non-Jewish music traditions and vice versa. In addition, the Freedman Jewish Sound Archive also collects spoken-word recordings that elucidate the Jewish experience including: Oral histories; Recitation of poetry or prose; - Page 4 - Robert and Molly Freedman Jewish Sound Archive DVD collection Humor and comedy; Theatre performances; Radio programs.     Charles University, Faculty of Arts East and Central European Studies Summer 2016 Jewish Images in Central European Cinema CUFA F 380 Instructor: Kevin Johnson Email: [email protected] Office Hours: by appointment Classes: Mon + Tue, 12.00 – 3.15, Wed 12.00 – 2.45, H201 (Hybernská 3, Prague 1) Course Description This course examines the portrayal of Jews and Jewish themes in the cinemas of Central Europe from the 1920s until the present. It considers not only depictions of Jews made by gentiles (sometimes with anti-Semitic undertones), but also looks at productions made by Jewish filmmakers aimed at a primarily Jewish audience. The selection of films is representative of the broader region where Czech, Slovak, Polish, Hungarian, Ruthenian, Ukranian, German, and Yiddish are (or were historically) spoken. Although attention will be given to the national-political context in which the films were made, most of the films by their very nature defy easy classification according to strict categories of statehood—this is particularly true for the pre-World War II Yiddish-language films. For this reason, the films will also be examined with an eye toward broader, transnational connections and global networks of people and ideas. Primary emphasis will be placed on two areas: (1) films that depict and document pre-Holocaust Jewish society in Central Europe, and (2) post-War films that seek to come terms with the Holocaust and the nearly absolute destruction of Jewish culture and tradition in the region. Weekly film screenings will be supplemented by theoretical readings related to the films or to concepts associated with them.

    BARBARA MINKUS - BIOGRAPHY Barbara Minkus began show business in Julius Monk's New York review Bits and Pieces. She then went on to receive rave reviews touring as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl throughout the United States. She was the original Lucy in the recording and Off-Broadway production of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown, and continued her Broadway success in The Education of Hyman Kaplan, directed by the great George Abbott. On television, she was a regular for six seasons of Love American Style and played Gittle the Witch in ABC's Curiosity Shop. She made many appearances on The Tonight Show and a record twenty times on The Merv Griffin Show. Barbara has numerous film and voice over credits, including playing the voice of Ms Pacman in the ABC cartoon series Pac Man. After taking time out to raise her family, Barbara returned to the theater at the Santa Monica Playhouse in Funny You Don't Look Like a Grandmother, and went on to star there as Molly Picon in Picon Pie, a role she helped research. She then reprised Molly Picon Off-Broadway. Barbara Minkus starred in Los Angeles and Florida as Jennie Grossinger in Stephen Cole's delightful musical Saturday Night at Grossinger's. Barbara presented From This Moment On – Minkus Sings Porter at The American Jewish University in Los Angeles and returned to AJU to present The Songs Of Irving Berlin. She played Miss Lynch in Grease at the Muni Theatre in St. Louis, and came back to The Muni and Starlight Theater in Kansas City, to play Yente in Fiddler on the Roof.

    Pioneering a cure Jun. 15, 2009 MEL BEZALEL , THE JERUSALEM POST When the first pioneers arrived on these shores almost 100 years ago, they carried with them numerous and varied cultural identities, a reminder of their home communities that, in many cases, had evolved over many generations. Music was a significant facet of this, says the New York-based Rabbi Greg Wall, producer of Pioneers for a Cure (PfaC), a charity project officially launched on Yom Ha'atzmaut this year to raise funds for cancer research through re-recording and distributing pioneer songs. Thirty tracks were recorded over the past two years in a New York studio, and are now available to download. Wall admits he knew very little about pioneer music before undertaking the mammoth task of coordinating the new recordings, by well-known modern artists such as Neshama Carlebach, David Broza, Pharoah's Daughter and Tovah Feldshuh. In fact, the idea was not his own. Wall's friend of 10 years, who is being identified only as "the anonymous benefactor" (he financially supports the entire project), proposed the fundraising scheme to Wall two years ago, along with fellow American PfaC teammates Beth Ravin, a music industry mogul who sits on the Grammy committee, and Ricky Orbach, founder and head of nonprofit record label Joodayoh. The benefactor's aim is to raise $100,000 for cancer research by the end of 2009 through downloads of the tracks, which can be purchased separately on the PfaC Web site (www.pioneersforacure.org) or iTunes Web site for $1.99, $9.99 or $99.99, so each track raises money independently.
