    Area 32 Melksham Public Transport Group Committee Parish Representatives:- Alan Baines, John Glover. The Group provides the opportunity for parish representatives to raise and discuss public transport matters with the Wiltshire Council officer responsible for public transport. The Area 32 Group covers the parishes of Melksham, Melksham Without, Atworth, Broughton Gifford, Holt and Semington. Formal meetings take place about 3 times a year, which for some time have only been attended by representatives from the first 3 parishes, but matters needing urgent attention can be raised at any time. Despite the implementation of the new Area Board structure, there appears to be an ongoing role for the Group, however there are signs that the Area Board may soon be unable to resist trying to take on the responsibilities. Once again, bus services in Melksham have been affected by enhancement/reconstruction works in the town centre. The temporary one-way system operating in High Street for the duration of the latest footway works again required bus services to be diverted. To allow buses to call at The Market Place, via King Street and Spa Road only, temporary bus stops had to be again set up in front of Crown Chambers and Crown House. As this arrangement has become necessary on several occasions, most passengers accepted the changes. The main problem was again motorists who persist in parking on the temporary bus stops, despite signs and copious amounts of yellow markings. Hopefully these arrangements will not be required for the next phase of work in Church Street. The 237 service to Trowbridge, via Broughton Gifford and Holt, and the 72 service to Corsham have been withdrawn, being replaced by the West Wiltshire Zig Zag from 1st August.

The cloth towns of Bradford-on-Avon, Trowbridge and Westbury were thriving when John Leland visited in 1540; but GD Ramsay thought they had passed their golden age by 1550 and declined during the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Joan Thirsk – following the precedent of John Aubrey, who wrote a survey of north Wiltshire in the 1660s – characterised the region as ‘cheese country’. Based on new archival research, this thesis argues that, far from declining, cloth manufacture in west Wiltshire grew throughout the Tudor era and remained strong under the early Stuarts; that production of this crucial trade commodity gave the region national significance; and that profits from the woollen trade were the main drivers of change in west Wiltshire over the period 1530-1680.

    Changes to the West Wiltshire Zig Zag bus service linking Corsham, Gastard, Whitley, Atworth, Holt and Broughton Gifford with Melksham, Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge starting on 2 January 2014 During the Summer we undertook a consultation exercise with passengers concerning proposed changes to the Zig Zag bus service which were required to make the service more cost effective. Following consideration of the responses received from the consultation and discussion with the bus operators that operate journeys on the Zig Zag services, we have been able to devise a new timetable that is similar to the current timetable but more efficient to operate and which incorporates most of the comments and suggestions that were made. This timetable will be introduced on the 2nd January and is shown overleaf – please check it carefully as it may be slightly different to that distributed previously. Unfortunately it will not be possible for the Zig Zag service to continue to serve Chippenham, but in its place, Holt Community Transport will be operating an experimental service from Holt, Broughton Gifford, Atworth, Whitley and Gastard to Chippenham on Fridays at the times shown below.
