Free Spirit Free Spirit Free Spirit Free Spirit It’s hard for Isabelle to stay idle; her need to travel is fuelled by her insatiable appetite for the new and different. So when you’re homebound against your will, the desire to escape becomes excrutiating. Fortunately, Isabelle’s imagination knows no limits. Traveling turns out to be a mind-set that can be done wherever, whenever. In this instance, the artist needed to escape far and beyond, within the confines of her own home and studio. Wandering through the mind of the artist, a simple bouquet becomes a luxuriant forest, a folding screen an invitation to stroll by the river, a chandelier a flock of colourful birds. There are no boundaries for the free spirit. Also known for her paper sculptures in trompe l’oeil, Isabelle de Borchgrave’s work is a constant play between textures and colours, illustrating her insatiable appetite to challenge our perceptions of the ordinary. Her art has been shown in major museums and institutions across the world; the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, The Fashion Institute of New York, The Royal Ontario Museum and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and Boston to name a few. Isabelle de Borchgrave’s work can also be found in the permanent collections of the Chateau de Versailles in Paris, Tsarkoïe Selo in Saint Petersburg, Venaria Reale in Turin and the Music Instruments Museum in Phoenix, amongst others. The artist lives and works in Brussels, Belgium. All artworks in this catalogue were made by Isabelle de Borchgrave for the exhibtion Free Spirit at her studio in Brussels, Belgium. The exhibition will remain on view through January 6, 2019. Isabelle de Borchgrave (Belgian, b. 1946), Charlotte- Marguerite de Montmorency, Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper exhibition presents the Princess of Condé (detail), 2017. Based on the portrait by full breadth of the artist’s exploration of historical costume through Peter Paul Rubens at The Frick contemporary paper sculpture and will include examples from all of her Pittsburgh. major series, beginning with her exploration of 300 years of fashion history in the works created for Papiers à la Mode. Works from her Splendors of the Medici series are inspired – more – by Italian Renaissance costumes portrayed in Old Master paintings, and the series The World of Mariano Fortuny explores the work of the iconoclastic Spanish fashion designer, famously based in Venice.
