These lectures are delivered on site at the de Young Museum and the Legion of Honor and are also offered on location to community groups throughout the Bay Area. We offer more than 100 lectures on different topics, primarily pertaining to the Museums’ special exhibitions and collections. Community Speakers docents are ambassadors to the public, and our goal is to encourage viewers to visit the museums. We have a longstanding tradition of excellence, education, and entertainment, imparting both enthusiasm and expertise in our presentations. WALLY FINDLAY GALLERIES 124 East 57th Street, New York, NY (212) 421 5390 [email protected] Aïzpiri Paul Aïzpiri (b. 1919) was born in Paris on May 14, 1919. Aïzpiri entered l’École Bulle to learn antique restoration, after his father insisted that he first learn a trade as a means of assuring his livelihood. After the course he entered the Beaux-Arts to study painting. Aïzpiri was certainly encouraged as a young painter in his early 20’s, during somber war-torn France, exhibiting amongst the painters of l’École Pont-Aven and the Nabis. He became a member of the Salon d’Automne in 1945, won Third Prize at the Salon de Moins de Trente Ans, of which he was a founding member and later showed at the Salon “Les Peintres Témoin de leur Temps”. In 1948, Aïzpiri won the Prix Corsica which allowed him to go to Marseilles. His stay there so impressed him, that he declared it was a turning point of his art. Not only did he find a whole new world to paint which was far different subjectively from any life he had known in Paris, but also a new world of color. -

This set of china includes the following pieces: two (2) 10" round plates, three (3) 9 1/2" round plates, one (1) 10" novelty plate, one (1) 9 1/4" x 7" oval plate, one (1) 7 1/4" round plate, four (4) 6" round plates, one (1) ceramic drinking pitcher, one (1) cappachino cup and saucer (diameter of 4 1/2"), two (2) coffee cups and saucers (diameter 4"), one (1) 3 1/2" round cup, one (1) 3" x 3" round cup, one (1) 2 1/2" x 3" drinking glass, one (1) mini cognac glass, two (2) 2" x 4 1/2" shot glasses, three (3) drinking glasses, one (1) 3" x 5" wine glass, two (2) 4 1/2" x 8 3/4" silver dishes. The ship was remarkable in that it was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. It was constructed with funding from United States government agencies with the mission to prove that the US was committed to the proposition of using atomic power for peace and part of President Eisenhower's larger "Atoms for Peace" project. The sleek and modern design of the ship led to some maritime historians believing it was the prettiest merchant ship ever built. This china embodies both the mission of using nuclear power for peace while incorporating the design inclinations of the ship. -

Biographical / Historical Artist, designer, and visual theorist György Kepes was born in 1906 in Selyp, Hungary. Originally associated with Germany’s Bauhaus as a colleague of László Moholy-Nagy, he emigrated to the United States in 1937 to teach Light and Color at Moholy's New Bauhaus (soon to be called the Institute of Design) in Chicago. In 1944, he produced Language of Vision, a landmark book about design theory, followed by the publication of six Kepes-edited anthologies in a series called Vision + Value as well as several other books. -

Annalong Remembers The Great War 1914 - 1918 What caused ‘The Great War’ 1914 - 1918? There were many factors which led to the outbreak of the ‘Great War’ in Europe. Many of these contributory causes were rooted in the long history of the established powers in Europe at that time - Russia, Germany, France, Italy, Austria-Hungary and Britain. Political wrangles, secret alliances, imperialism and nationalistic pride combined to make early twentieth-century Europe a dangerous powder keg waiting to explode. Alliances In the years preceding the outbreak of war, the European nations were continually manoeuvring and making alliances in order to protect or advance their own interests. In 1881, Germany made an alliance with Austria-Hungary and Italy which guaranteed that all three parties would help each other if attacked by France. However, behind the scenes, Italy had made a secret side deal with France saying they would not help the Germans. In 1904, Britain and France signed a pact and then in 1907 Britain, France and Russia committed themselves to a three-way agreement known as the ‘Triple Entente’. Germany saw this latest agreement as a real threat to its power and position. Imperialism For centuries, European powers like the British, French and Dutch had been successfully building empires around the world which had created much wealth through trade, natural assets and in many cases, slavery. Other countries like Germany and Russia were envious of the imperial success of their neighbours and began to plan the creation of their own empires. Tensions grew throughout Europe and as distrust and dislike dominated political affairs - many recognised that conflict was inevitable. -

Cette exposition permettra de découvrir plus de quarante-cinq créations exceptionnelles révélant l’art de travailler le papier et la peinture. Ces créations, issues des collections de l’artiste, s’incarneront sous la forme de robes, de caftans et d’autres accessoires de mode aux couleurs chatoyantes. A cette occasion, Isabelle de Borchgrave mettra la table dans la salle à manger du château à partir d’un service de table de Gien dont elle a conçu les décors, et investira la pièce avec d’autres créations originales, comme ses légumes géants. Ainsi, l’artiste invitera les visiteurs à s’immerger dans son univers festif et généreux, propice au rêve et à l’imagination. Formée au Centre d’art décoratif puis à l’académie royale de Bruxelles, Isabelle de Borchgrave, après une visite au Metropolitan Museum of art de New York en 1994, conçoit sa première collection historique de vêtements en papier appelée « Papiers à la mode ». -
