Situated on the banks of Khalid Lagoon, Al Majaz Waterfront is a popular leisure destination in the city. Home to a lush park, cosy cafes and several restaurants, this is a great spot for family outings and evening strolls. There is also a mini golf course, jogging track and kids’ splash park. Come down to the waterfront at night to see the fountain shoot water over 100m into the air accompanied by coloured lights and music.

Rent a bicycle from one of the Byky (q8byky.com) stations at either end of Al Majaz Waterfront and cycle up and down the Khalid Lagoon Trail. Adult and kid- friendly rentals are available.

This island’s focal point is the flagpole which stands at a staggering 123m. The area has a paved walkway with viewing areas and seating from which you can see the impressive landmark up close. Flag Island's 1971 Design Space holds exhibitions and workshops on contemporary design, while the 1,000 seat amphitheatre hosts music festivals and performances throughout the year. There is also a Jones the Grocer restaurant, which is perfect for grabbing lunch or coffee. Al Montazah theme park (page 84) is located on the other side of the island.

SHARJAH CORNICHE

Winding along the coast, Sharjah’s Corniche St is the place to go for soothing strolls and breathtaking views of the city’s skyline. At the northern end, watch the dhows and other boats bobbing outside of Creek Customs. Further south, the bustling street is lined with shops, restaurants and hotels. This part of the corniche really comes alive at night with tourists, joggers and families out to enjoy the evening air.

Stretching along either side of the kilometre- long Qasba Canal, which connects Khalid and lagoons, Al Qasba is packed with popular cafes, restaurants and interesting attractions. Take advantage of the waterside locale and enjoy a cruise along the canal in an abra or an eco-friendly water kart. Maraya Art Centre features an art library, regular public workshops and events and several public park art sites where you can see the centre’s interactive projects and sculptures. There is also a theatre – Masrah Al Qasba – which hosts shows, films and performances.

Don't miss Al Qasba Musical Fountain, which goes off regularly from 5pm every evening. Visit Al Qasba's website for timings.

KING FAISAL MOSQUE

Situated right in the centre of Sharjah city, King Faisal Mosque’s grand size and complex geometric design make it an interesting sight to behold. Sharjah’s largest and most distinct house of worship, the mosque covers an area of 12,000 sq m and can accommodate up to 12,000 people inside and a further 5,000 outside. While non-Muslims are not allowed to enter, it is worth passing by just to appreciate its impressive architecture. Its three angular tiers are designed to create the shape of a multi-pointed star.

The iconic Al Noor Mosque stands proudly on the banks of Khalid Lagoon. Its design is rooted in the traditional Ottoman style, with calligraphic inscriptions from the Holy Quran and intricately decorated domes, arches and pillars. Al Noor is one of the few mosques in the country open to non-Muslim visitors. Regular tours are conducted on Mondays at 10am to promote cross-cultural understanding and allow people inside to learn about Islam and admire the building’s stunning architecture.

Built in 1823, Sharjah Fort, or Al Hisn, was home to the ruling Al Qasimi family and the seat of Sharjah’s government. Once the biggest and most important building in the emirate, it has assimilated into the city over the years and is now part of the Heart of Sharjah heritage area. Outside you can see how the fort protected the city and its inhabitants nearly 200 years ago, while inside royal artefacts are on display, telling the story of Sharjah’s modern history and its ruling family.

Once the gathering place of the area’s scholars and intellectuals, Majlis Al Midfa belonged to Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Midfa, a prominent figure in the early 20th century who published the UAE’s first newspaper. Inside, a museum explains the role of the majlis in society with artefacts and informational displays. Be sure to take a look at the building's most prominent feature, the round windtower. An incredibly effective precursor to air conditioning, this circular tower is the only one of its kind in the UAE.

AL MAJAZ AMPHITHEATRE almajazamphitheatre.ae

Occupying its own small island on Khalid Lagoon and the first structure of its kind in the region, this landmark project was completed to celebrate Sharjah’s year as the Capital of Islamic Culture in 2014. An architecturally stunning open theatre, Al Majaz has a line- up of performances by Arab and international artists and can hold up to 4,500 people. UNIVERSITY CITY

Located opposite Sharjah International Airport, this sprawling area of more than 11 sq km is home to 10 main educational institutions, including the emirate’s largest – the University of Sharjah. It is a lovely place for a relaxing stroll with beautifully landscaped grounds and some of the most impressive architecture in the city. Be sure to visit the Dr. Sultan Al-Qasimi Centre for Gulf Studies, which exhibits rare coins, historic maps and photographs and other items tracing the development of the region.

CENTRAL SOUK

The Central Souk – or Souk Al Markazi in Arabic – was opened in 1979 and since then has become the biggest and best-known souk in Sharjah. It consists of two air-conditioned buildings, connected by indoor footbridges, which house more than 600 shops selling everything from gold and antiques to electronics and homewares. Even if you aren’t into shopping, a stop here is worth it just for a glimpse of the building’s elaborately tiled exterior and 20 windtowers.

The region’s largest project of its kind and a UNESCO World HEART OF SHARJAH Heritage Site candidate, Heart of Sharjah encompasses the city’s heritage and arts areas, restoring and linking them together to create a unique tourist destination that retains the feel of the past. Some of the traditional coral stone buildings date back more than 200 years.

SOUKS Heart of Sharjah contains four traditional markets – Souk Al Arsah, Souk Al Shanasiyah, Souk Saqr and the Old Souk – selling textiles, spices, perfumes, souvenirs and local handicrafts. Souk Al Arsah is particularly interesting as it is believed to be the oldest souk in the UAE.

MUSEUMS Museums are housed within many of the historic buildings, including Al Eslah School Museum, Sharjah Heritage Museum, Bait Al Naboodah, Traditional Games House and Emirates Handicraft Centre. They exhibit precious artefacts and preserved traditions to offer a glimpse into what life was like before oil was discovered. The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is also in this area.

ART Art in all its forms can be found within Heart of Sharjah – from plays at Sharjah National Theatre and cutting-edge exhibitions at Sharjah Art Museum, to calligraphy workshops at the Sharjah Centre for the Art of Arabic Calligraphy & Ornamentation and the architecture of the preserved buildings. Every two years Heart of Sharjah hosts contemporary artworks during the Sharjah Biennial.

Sharjah Heritage Museum is a good place to start for an introduction to the emirate’s history and Emirati culture in general. Nestled within the Heart of Sharjah, the museum explores the diverse environments, trades and traditions that shaped the lives of Sharjah’s early inhabitants. Costumed mannequins, large-scale photographs and a selection of jewellery, pottery and other handicrafts bring to life a past when fishing, farming, pearling and maritime trade drove the area’s economy.

SHARJAH CALLIGRAPHY MUSEUM sharjahmuseums.ae

This is the region’s sole museum dedicated entirely to calligraphy. Calligraphies of all styles, all eras and from all corners of the Muslim world are gathered and displayed here to take the visitor on a journey through the evolution of Arabic calligraphy. As well as being an ancient art form, modern calligraphers now often exhibit alongside graffiti artists, and calligraphy is collected as an abstract art as well as a representational script. The museum is also a setting for children’s classes and adult education.

A traditional Emirati home built in the middle of the 19th century, Bait Al Naboodah has been repurposed into an evocative house museum. It was once the residence of wealthy pearl trader Obaid bin Eissa bin Ali Al Shamsi – nicknamed Al Naboodah. With its intricately carved doors and unique plaster engravings on both the interior and exterior, Bait Al Naboodah is as much a piece of art as it is an artefact of the past. Walking through the halls and courtyard gives visitors a real sense of what life was like in Sharjah in the 1800s.

This museum offers an interesting display of antiquities from the region. Using well-designed displays and documentary film, the museum traces man’s first steps and progress across the Arabian Peninsula through the ages. The results of archaeological excavations throughout Sharjah and the UAE, including (page 58), bring the past landscape and history to life. The collections on display here are incredibly fascinating and include everything from pottery and weaponry to jewellery and ancient human remains.

The exhibitions at this museum work together to tell a holistic story of Islamic civilisation. Start in the Abu Bakr Gallery of Islamic Faith, which introduces Islam and its central principles. Next, peruse the museum’s collection of reproductions and interactive models that explain the achievements of history’s great Islamic scholars. Four large galleries upstairs showcase Islamic art and handicrafts from the seventh to the 20th century.

While the city of Sharjah may be home to many cultural institutions, the emirate’s outlying territories also have their fair share of heritage sites. In Kalba, on the UAE’s east coast, you will find Bait Sheikh Saeed Bin Hamad Al Qasimi. Built between 1898 and 1901, this historic home is an excellent example of the artistic style and traditional identity of Gulf architecture. Al Qurm, in Kalba, is one of the oldest natural green sites on the UAE’s east coast. Its varied landscape, consisting of mangrove forests, swamps, salt marshes and mudflats, is an important breeding ground for many endangered bird species, including the Arabian collared kingfisher. The calm waters of Khor Kalba provide the best vantage point to observe the diverse wildlife of Al Qurm. Absolute Adventure (page 63) offers kayak tours through the mangroves where you can see sea turtles, crabs and birds galore.

On the northern shores of Khalid Lagoon is Al Noor Island – a beautifully landscaped garden that is home to more than 85 plant species and dotted with modern sculptures. The island’s centrepiece is the Butterfly House, where you can see over 500 exotic butterflies from all over the world. There is also a playground for the kids and the Literature Pavilion, which offers a tranquil, cosy setting to relax or read. At night, brilliantly coloured light installations provide a completely different view of the island.
