In this old city from the 10th century and the nearby cities can be found an exceptional historic heritage. The Cathars lived there before, and they have been hunted and persecuted by the Church. They left behind them a rich culture, historic places and a lot of beautiful castles in the middle of the mountains. Today you can take part in the preservation of this rich local, international and human heritage. In this project you will restore an « Orri », Occitan word for shepherd’s hut. Those huts are a part of Quillan’s heritage and the symbol of a way of life and a work threaten to disappear. Work: You will restore the old hut in a sustainable way, supported by your technical leader, you will use the techniques of dry stones to restore the entry, and day by day, rebuild the wall of stones. At the same time you will restore the old natural basins. Accomodation and food: You will be accommodated under tents, with an access to toilets and showers. Tents will be provided but you can bring your own if you want. The group will be sharing the cleaning chores and preparing meals together. The budget will be allocated to the group leader ad you will participate in the preparation of dishes using good products from the market and local producers. Location and leisure: Quillan is located in the north of the Pyrenees and in the south of the department of the Aude. The lakes and rivers in the surroundings have been an opportunity to develop a lot of water sports or activities. Quillan is seen as an international center for water sports. Surrounded by 3 natural parks, the nature lovers can participate at many activities in the ‘Centre Sports Nature de la Forge’ (hikes, canoe, mountain bike, rafting, climbing…). You can find a great cultural heritage close to Quillan, discover the Cathars Castles (Puivert 15km, Puillaurens 17km and Arques 22km) but also the Quillan castle and his old church. More information: www.quillan.fr Requirements: For the work, please bring gardening gloves, working clothes and closed shoes. As the night can be quite cold, remember also to bring warm clothes and a sleeping bag. Don’t forget your protections against the sun (hat, glasses, sunscreen…) and your swim suit! Some shared times could be organized if you want, so please feel free to bring some cultural materials in your bag (food, recipes, stories or dances)! Foreigners belonging to the European Union must bring with them a personal EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), and everybody must, in any case, bring their insurance certificate.     Peregrinations Couiza - Montazels Travel trough the centuries A bit of history… Couiza, close to the river Aude and Salz, attracted the attention of the Romans early in history. The surrounding heights were preferred over muddy river shores of the Salz. The place called “des Oliviers” was occupied from the 1st to the 3rd centuries BC, testified by the discovery of two Gallo-Roman coins. First, Couiza became a part of the Roman roads from Razès to Corbières. These roads have been used until the Middle-Ages. During the Carolingian period, the village was built gradually and the parish church of St John the Baptist was founded between the 9th and 10th centuries. In the feudal time Couiza was a small village under the authority of the earls of Razès, then the Carcassonne’s Viscount of the Trencavel dynasty. As a result of the crusade against the Cathars, Couiza became property of the French knight Pierre de Voisins, who also owned the villages of Rennes-le- Château, Coustaussa, Arques and Antugnac. After the peace treaty in 1258, a sharp increase of the population could be noticed. The De Voisins supported the settlement of new inhabitants. In the second half of the 14th century, the plague and the hundred-year war caused a major population decline. The beginning of the 16th century was marked by a noticeable economic recovery. In 1518, Françoise, the last heir of the de Voisins, married Viscount Jean de Joyeuse. The couple decided to build his new residence in Couiza. The construction was entrusted to sculptor and architect Nicolas Bachelier.

On this holiday we enjoy some beautiful walks in the foothills of the Pyrenees and benefit from the added dimension of the mystical Cathar castles and the lore surrounding them. The names may be familiar: Peyrepertuse, Quéribus, and Roquefixade to mention a few. The Cathars were a heretical sect that flourished in the Pyrenean foothills in the 12th and 13th centuries. The sect had powerful adherents who built some of the most romantically sited castles anywhere in the world. The ruins of many of these still exist on rocky desolate mountain tops and on our walks we may have a chance to explore them. The 200km Seniter Cathare trail runs from the Mediterranean to the Pyrenees. We will enjoy the highlights. Our stay starts in Duilhac (three nights), from here we will travel to Tuchan; this is where we start our weeks walk, finishing in Foix. Our walking programme will take us out into the surrounding countryside to enjoy beautiful walking, with days rambling in a variety of magnificent landscapes, from hillside vineyards, gorges and mountains to Pyrenean forests and hilltop castles. We start our journey of discovery in Tuchan where we enjoy a linear walk along the Sentier Cathare with a visit to the castle of Quéribus.
