Childhood and Adolescence Short description of the intervention: Let’s Take on Childhood Obesity is a public health campaign to take on childhood obesity aimed at parents of children aged 2-12 years, on the island of Ireland. This is a 3 year campaign and was launched in October 2013 by Safefood i in partnership with the Health Service Executive 2 and Healthy Ireland Framework 3 in the Republic of Ireland and the ‘Fitter Futures for All’ Implementation Plan in Northern Ireland 4. The campaign urges parents to make practical changes to everyday lifestyle habits which would make a big difference to their children’s future health. Tackling Childhood Obesity is a public health priority, with 1 in 4 children across the Island of Ireland carrying excess weight. There is growing evidence underlining the impact of obesity on short and long term health and well-being. Children who are obese are likely to remain obese through to adulthood. The aim of the campaign is to halt the rise in both overweight and obesity levels in children by: 1. Communicating practical solutions that parents can adopt in order to tackle the everyday habits that are associated with excess weight gain in childhood. 2. Maintaining awareness of the health challenges posed by excess weight in childhood and the negative impact this can have on the quality of life. The campaign provides parents with practical solutions that they can adopt to tackle everyday habits associated with excess weight.

The artwork was jointly commissioned by Armagh City and District Council and the NSMC Joint Secretariat and was to relate to the cultural and historical fabric of Armagh City and to the NSMC. The artwork typifies Declan O’Mahony’s current ‘acrylic- pouring’ working methods. There are seven distinct sizes in the multi-coloured layering in the artwork. In mythological terms the number ‘seven’ was known to symbolize perfection and completeness and Armagh, geographically, is nestled among the Seven Hills. The oldest surviving manuscript in Ireland is the Book of Armagh. The twin columns of abstract, calligraphic symbols contributed yet another subtle element of inspiration to the overall design of the diptych. Finally thousands of fragments of coloured glass adorn the elongated windows in both cathedrals in Armagh. The architects of such great towering structures were fully aware of the power of colour to raise the human spirit to higher levels.

This work pattern is necessary for some service industries and professions. It has been suggested that shift work has a negative impact on health, increasing the risk of chronic disease (long-term or incurable illness). Much of this is potentially linked to disruption of the normal circadian rhythm (“body clock”). However, it is also important to consider the reported lifestyle factors related to shift work on the island of Ireland today. safefood commissioned a study to investigate the eating patterns and related lifestyle behaviours, experiences and workplace environments of shift workers on the island of Ireland. The research was led by Dr Michelle Share at the Children's Research Centre, Trinity College Dublin in collaboration with Dr Barbara Stewart-Knox at University of Ulster, Coleraine. The report represents an all-Ireland needs assessment of food and physical activity-related health issues in alternative education and training settings. Young people in ESLs settings represent a population group at risk of poor health outcomes. Research into the nutrition and physical activity habits of young people who are ESLs is limited. This survey of young people revealed that their diets and physical activity patterns are a concern and similar to other socio-economically marginalised groups. They are at risk of poor health outcomes in terms of the major non-communicable chronic diseases because of poor nutrition, overweight and obesity. This key piece of work contributes to the evidence base in the area of ESLs and their nutritional needs on the island of Ireland (IOI). This includes; mapping the service providers on the IOI, gathering perspectives from young people and service providers and making recommendations for improving the nutritional needs of ESLs.

    BREXIT: POTENTIAL IMPLICATIONS FOR safefood (FSPB) 1. Background and General Overview safefood one of six implementation bodies set up under the Good Friday Agreement is a food safety promotion agency, and as such, has no food regulatory role nor involvement in mitigation of the potential implications and consequences to the efficient and effective post- BREXIT operation of the food control framework on this island. safefood’s mandate covers both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and accordingly we have to operate in two jurisdictions that may have two different legislative frameworks post Brexit for a variety of aspects that may impact the effective operation of food safety and nutrition promotion. These frameworks include food law, public health, employment law, taxation, pension law, data protection law, human rights, freedom of information and controls on movement of people, goods, services and capital (the four freedoms of the single market) etc. It is expected that the political, legislative and operational consequences of BREXIT for safefood, will only become apparent towards the completion of the withdrawal agreement and/or transition period. safefood has identified the following potential BREXIT issues that may have implications for both safefood’s legislative mandate and the framework within which it operates, and general operational processes. 2. The Good Friday Agreement 1998 – Basis of North-South working (i) Barriers to effective working - Border There has been much commentary and speculation as to the effects of Brexit in regard to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, and the potential significant risk to both community cohesion in Northern Ireland, and the cross-border and North-South dimensions of the ongoing peace and reconciliation process.
