Soon after rallies were organized across the U.S. under the Tea Party banner. From its inception in 2009, the TPM became an essential player in U.S. politics and pivotal in flipping control of the Senate and House to the Republican Party during the 2010 midterm elections. The movement faced controversy on both sides of the political spectrum for its beliefs and fervent stance against compromising with political adversaries. Researchers argued that the TPM was an example of Richard Hofstadter’s Paranoid Style. Others claimed that the movement’s rhetoric, member demographics, and political success demonstrated it was outside the boundaries of the Paranoid Style.

In addition, the paper provides complete discographies, including critical commentary, of records produced by bands associated with the Bosstown Sound. Tours roll across the coun- try like mobile homes in a Florida hurricane. The most memo- rable for this magazine/bar owner were the Warped Tour and Wakestock, where such bands as Bad Religion, Billy Talent, Alexisonfire, Closet Monster, The Trews and Crowned King had audiences in mosh-pit frenzies. At Wakestock, in Wasaga Beach, Ont., Gasoline, Fox Racing, and Bluenotes rocked so hard at their two-day private cottage party that local authorities shut down the stage after Magneta Lane and Flashlight Brown. Poor Moneen didn't get to crush the eardrums of the drunken revellers. That was day one! Day two was an even bigger party with the live music again shut down. The Reason, Moneen and Crowned King owned the patio until Alexisonfire and their crew rolled into party. Gasoline would also like to thank Chuck (see cover story) and other UN officials for making sure that the boys in Sum41 made it back to the Bovine for another cocktail, despite the nearby mortar and gunfire during their Warchild excursion. Schmidt * ABSTRACT This Article considers the Tea Party as a constitutional movement. I explore the Tea Party’s ambitious effort to transform the role of the Constitution in American life, examining both the substance of the Tea Party’s constitutional claims and the tactics movement leaders have embraced for advancing these claims. No major social movement in modern American history has so explicitly tied its reform agenda to the Constitution. From the time when the Tea Party burst onto the American political scene in early 2009, its supporters claimed in no uncertain terms that much recent federal government action overstepped constitutionally defined limitations. A belief that the Constitution establishes clear boundaries on federal power is at the core of the Tea Party’s constitutional vision.

Berry Dept. of Political Science Tufts University [email protected] Paper prepared for delivery at the annual meeting of the American Political Science Association, San Francisco, August, 2017. 1 Abstract Tea Party Decline Since its birth in 2009 the Tea Party has been a controversial force in American politics. Here we look at the life cycle of the Tea Party, asking how it has fared over time since its initial street protests and congressional town hall confrontations. Drawing on a unique data base of interviews with 95 Tea Party leaders conducted between 2011 and 2016, we are in a position to compare chapter births and deaths. Of these 95 chapters most were founded in 2009 and only a handful after 2011. None of the chapters we examined formed after 2013. The mortality rate of chapters appear high as we are able to confirm that close to 40 percent of these chapters are dead or on life support. We link each organization’s internal capacity to whether chapters still exist in 2017 and find a powerful relationship between low capacity and death. Traditional social movement theory and interest group scholarship provide effective frames for understanding the downward spiral of the Tea Party. 2 The Tea Party’s stunning emergence in early 2009 reshaped American politics and its impact continues to reverberate today. 1 Yet the Tea Party today is dying, off stage and unnoticed perhaps, but dying nevertheless. The Tea Party’s organizational base is shrinking year by year and there is no evidence of rebirth or renewal.
