Copyright © 2010 Printed in Norway – all rights reserved ACTA ORIENTALIA ISSN 0001-6438 The Towers of Yue Olivia Rovsing Milburn Seoul National University Abstract This paper concerns the architectural history of eastern and southern China, in particular the towers constructed within the borders of the ancient non-Chinese Bai Yue kingdoms found in present-day southern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and Guangdong provinces. The skills required to build such structures were first developed by Huaxia people, and hence the presence of these imposing buildings might be seen as a sign of assimilation. In fact however these towers seem to have acquired distinct meanings for the ancient Bai Yue peoples, particularly in marking a strong division between those groups whose ruling houses claimed descent from King Goujian of Yue and those that did not. These towers thus formed an important marker of identity in many ancient independent southern kingdoms. Keywords: Bai Yue, towers, architectural history, identity, King Goujian of Yue Introduction This paper concerns the architectural history of eastern and southern China, in particular the relics of the ancient non-Chinese kingdoms found in present-day southern Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian and 160 OLIVIA ROVSING MILBURN Guangdong provinces. In the late Spring and Autumn period, Warring States era, and early Han dynasty these lands formed the kingdoms of Wu 吳, Yue 越, Minyue 閩越, Donghai 東海 and Nanyue 南越, in addition to the much less well recorded Ximin 西閩, Xiyue 西越 and Ouluo 甌駱.1 The peoples of these different kingdoms were all non- Chinese, though in the case of Nanyue (and possibly also Wu) the royal house was of Chinese origin.2 This paper focuses on one single aspect of the architecture of these kingdoms: the construction of towers. -
Engineers' Moral Responsibility: a Confucian Perspective

Yet, despite a growing awareness that engineers should be trained to become more sensitive to cultural diferences, most engineering ethics education is still based on Western approaches. In this article, we discuss the notion of responsibility in Confucianism and explore what a Confu- cian perspective could add to the existing engineering ethics literature. To do so, we analyse the Citicorp case, a widely discussed case in the existing engineering ethics literature, from a Confucian perspective. Our comparison suggests the fol- lowing. When compared to virtue ethics based on Aristotle, Confucianism focuses primarily on ethical virtues; there is no explicit reference to intellectual virtues. An important diference between Confucianism and most western approaches is that Confucianism does not defne clear boundaries of where a person’s responsibility end. It also suggests that the gap between Western and at least one Eastern approach, namely Confucianism, can be bridged. Although there are diferences, the Confu- cian view and a virtue-based Western view on moral responsibility have much in common, which allows for a promising base for culturally inclusive ethics education for engineers. It is the contention of this study that the process of transformation from idea into practice has led to mutilation, adaptation or deliberate reinterpretation of the original set of ideas. The ex ample of the evolution of the humanistic educational ideas of Confucius into a system of education seems to support this contention. It is hoped that this study will help separate that which is genuinely Confucius' from that which tradition has attributed to him; and to understand how this has happened and what consequences have resulted. -
The Qin/Han Unification of China Course Description in Geography
Hum 230 Fall 2016 The Qin/Han Unification of China Course description In geography and cultural advances, the Qin and Han dynasties surpassed their predecessors, and together they number among the world’s greatest empires. This course examines their heritage through a selection of primary texts including the Confucian Analects, the enigmatic Dao de Jing, the cosmological Book of Changes, and the historical narrative tradition of Sima Qian’s Shi Ji. It samples cultural expression ranging from the poetic discourse of rhapsodies and pentasyllabic verse to the religious endeavors manifested in funerary artifacts. Alongside textual studies, this course explores the Han’s physical remains, including the ruins of its capitals, the Wu Liang shrine, and its important tombs. The Qin/Han portrays itself as a territorial, political, and cultural unifier, and it sets the benchmark against which all later dynasties must measure themselves. Course requirements 1. Reading and pondering all assigned readings before conferences. This will include regularly writing reading responses, discussion questions, poetic analyses, visual exploratories, and the like. 2. Attending all conferences, including regular, active and substantive conference participation. 3. Attending all lectures (which also means keeping 11:00-11:50 a.m. open on Wednesdays and Fridays for additional lectures or activities). All lectures meet in the Performing Arts Building, Rm 320, 11:00-11:50. 4. Three short (5-7 pages) analytical papers; deadlines & format will be set by conference leaders. 5. The Old Master
INTRODUCTION Four main characteristics distinguish this book from other translations of Laozi. First, the base of my translation is the oldest existing edition of Laozi. It was excavated in 1973 from a tomb located in Mawangdui, the city of Changsha, Hunan Province of China, and is usually referred to as Text A of the Mawangdui Laozi because it is the older of the two texts of Laozi unearthed from it.1 Two facts prove that the text was written before 202 bce, when the first emperor of the Han dynasty began to rule over the entire China: it does not follow the naming taboo of the Han dynasty;2 its handwriting style is close to the seal script that was prevalent in the Qin dynasty (221–206 bce). Second, I have incorporated the recent archaeological discovery of Laozi-related documents, disentombed in 1993 in Jishan District’s tomb complex in the village of Guodian, near the city of Jingmen, Hubei Province of China. These documents include three bundles of bamboo slips written in the Chu script and contain passages related to the extant Laozi.3 Third, I have made extensive use of old commentaries on Laozi to provide the most comprehensive interpretations possible of each passage. Finally, I have examined myriad Chinese classic texts that are closely associated with the formation of Laozi, such as Zhuangzi, Lüshi Chunqiu (Spring and Autumn Annals of Mr. Lü), Han Feizi, and Huainanzi, to understand the intellectual and historical context of Laozi’s ideas. In addition to these characteristics, this book introduces several new interpretations of Laozi. -

Philosophical Ideals and Artistic Pursuits in Asia and the West NEH Module Dr. John Santiago Confucian Ethics in the Analects as Virtue Ethics Introduction The Confucian tradition embodies one of the most enduring and influential moral traditions in world history. Yet for Western readers Confucius remains little known, and perhaps even less approachable than the major thinkers of the Western philosophical tradition. While it is difficult to overstate his influence, Confucius himself left little if any written account of his moral outlook. What we know of the man and the origins of the Confucian tradition come from brief accounts of his life and teachings compiled primarily in the present text, the Analects. -

ABU TV Song Festival available for broadcast The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union has announced the conditions under which broadcasters around the world will be able to screen the region’s newest international TV song festival. The inaugural ABU Television Song Festival gala concert showcasing up to 11 of the best acts in the Asia-Pacific will take place in Seoul, Korea, on 14 October during the Union’s 49th General Assembly. Korean host broadcaster KBS will record the two-hour concert in KBS Hall and make it available to broadcasters around the world. Ms Hanizah Hamzah, Senior Executive (TV) at the ABU says participating ABU members can screen the show for free. “Non-participating ABU member organisations or non-member organisations throughout the world may broadcast the show after the participating ABU member organisation in the same country or territory completes its initial broadcast,” she says. A fee and agreement negotiated with the ABU will cover all kinds of television broadcasting, including terrestrial, cable, and satellite, for non-downloadable live streaming on the Internet transmitted simultaneously with television broadcast, and also for the non-downloadable, live streaming, non-profit catch-up services online.
