~ ~ WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES A Survey of Rare and Endangered Mayflies of Selected RESEARCH Rivers of Wisconsin by Richard A. Lillie REPORT110 Bureau of Research, Monona December 1995 ~ Abstract The mayfly fauna of 25 rivers and streams in Wisconsin were surveyed during 1991-93 to document the temporal and spatial occurrence patterns of two state endangered mayflies, Acantha metropus pecatonica and Anepeorus simplex. Both species are candidates under review for addition to the federal List of Endang ered and Threatened Wildlife. Based on previous records of occur rence in Wisconsin, sampling was conducted during the period May-July using a combination of sampling methods, including dredges, air-lift pumps, kick-nets, and hand-picking of substrates. No specimens of Anepeorus simplex were collected. Three specimens (nymphs or larvae) of Acanthametropus pecatonica were found in the Black River, one nymph was collected from the lower Wisconsin River, and a partial exuviae was collected from the Chippewa River. Homoeoneuria ammophila was recorded from Wisconsin waters for the first time from the Black River and Sugar River. New site distribution records for the following Wiscon sin special concern species include: Macdunnoa persimplex, Metretopus borealis, Paracloeodes minutus, Parameletus chelifer, Pentagenia vittigera, Cercobrachys sp., and Pseudiron centra/is. Collection of many of the aforementioned species from large rivers appears to be dependent upon sampling sand-bottomed substrates at frequent intervals, as several species were relatively abundant during only very short time spans. Most species were associated with sand substrates in water < 2 m deep. Acantha metropus pecatonica and Anepeorus simplex should continue to be listed as endangered for state purposes and receive a biological rarity ranking of critically imperiled (S1 ranking), and both species should be considered as candidates proposed for listing as endangered or threatened as defined by the Endangered Species Act. -

Soc., 19(3): 95-107, 2017 ISSN:1302-0250 Contribution to the Knowledge of Ephemeroptera (Insecta) of the Eastern Black Sea Region Caner AYDINLI Anadolu University, Faculty of Science, Department of Biology, 26470, Eskişehir/Turkey, e-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT This study was carried out in order to contribute to the Ephemeroptera (Insecta) fauna of the Eastern Black Sea region and Turkey. As a result, 2.129 larvae specimens from provinces of the Eastern Black Sea region were collected in 2009, and 26 species belonging to 14 genera from 8 families were determined. Eight of these species are new records for the region, namely Baetis vernus, B. (Nigrobaetis) niger, Procloeon bifidum, P. pennulatum, Rhithrogena savoiensis, Ecdyonurus venosus, Choroterpes picteti, Ephemera vulgata. Moreover, Rhithrogena savoiensis Alba-Tercedor and Sowa, 1987 is a new record for the Turkish fauna. Thus, the number of mayfly species in Turkey increased to 158. INTRODUCTION Ephemeroptera is one of the most evolutionary primitive orders of the extant insect groups as well as an ancient lineage of insects. The dominant stage in the life cycle of mayflies is the larval one, as they and the larvae inhabit all types of freshwaters. Mayflies are distributed all over the world excluding Antarctica and some remote oceanic islands. Even though Ephemeroptera is represented by more than 3.000 described species, their taxonomical and faunistical studies are still in progress (Barber-James et al., 2008). The shoreline of the Eastern Black Sea Region is a refuge for the Caucasian fauna consisting of Siberian and cold steppe elements migrating towards the temperate areas during the glacial periods in Anatolia (Bahadır and Emet, 2013). -

ZooKeys 637: 135–149. https://doi.org/10.3897/ zookeys.637.10359 Abstract Peat bogs are unique wetland ecosystems of high conservation value all over the world, yet data on the macroinvertebrates (including mayfly assemblages) in these habitats are still scarce. Over the course of one growing season, mayfly assemblages were sampled each month, along with other macroinvertebrates, in the largest and oldest Croatian peat bog and an adjacent stream. In total, ten mayfly species were recorded: two species in low abundance in the peat bog, and nine species in significantly higher abundance in the stream. Low species richness and abundance in the peat bog were most likely related to the harsh environ- mental conditions and mayfly habitat preferences.In comparison, due to the more favourable habitat con- ditions, higher species richness and abundance were observed in the nearby stream. -

Special emphasis was placed on multi-class extensions of Support Vector Machines (SVMs). Benthic macroinvertebrates are used in biomonitoring due to their properties to react to changes in water quality. The use of benthic macroinvertebrates in biomonitoring requires a large number of collected samples. Traditionally benthic macroinvertebrates are separated and identified manually one by one from samples collected by biologists. This, however, is a time-consuming and expensive approach. By the automation of the identification process time and money would be saved and more extensive biomonitoring would be possible. The aim of the thesis was to examine what classification method would be the most appro- priate for automated benthic macroinvertebrate classification. -

APPENDIX 2 Macroinvertebrates Abstract This appendix reviews the available evidence concerning the potential effects of the activities associated with the Spruce No. 1 Mine on the macroinvertebrate community of receiving streams and presents survey results from streams directly affected by the Spruce No. 1 Mine, including Oldhouse Branch and Pigeonroost Branch, and comparative data from adjacent mined streams impacted by the Dal-Tex operation, including Beech Creek, Left Fork Beech Creek, Rockhouse Creek, and Spruce Fork (Figure A2.1.). Figure A2.1. Map of Spruce No. 1 Mine area and adjacent Dal-Tex operation. EPA conducted three different analyses. First, EPA compared benthic macroinvertebrate community composition from Pigeonroost Branch and Oldhouse Branch to benthic macroinvertebrate community composition from streams that have been impacted by Mingo Logan's Dal-Tex operation. Second, EPA used an observed/expected approach to estimate and quantify taxonomic changes following mining disturbance. Third, EPA compared WVSCI scores in Pigeonroost Branch and Oldhouse Branch with streams impacted by the Dal-Tex operation. The results showed that some naturally occurring taxa will be locally extirpated in the receiving streams and will likely be replaced by pollution-tolerant taxa if mining and filling proceed. These results are supported by the State of West Virginia’s multimetric index (WVSCI), which also indicates that the magnitude and extent of degradation will increase following mining. The appendix also 1 includes a discussion of appropriate invertebrate metrics and data collection and analysis methods and explains why EPA focuses on changes to sensitive taxa and community composition.
