Who is Behind it? The Israeli Center for Victims of Cults (ICVC) is well-known in Israel for its activities against a number of religious and spiritual movements that are depicted as harmful and dangerous. Over the years, the ICVC has managed to garner easy access to the media and Israeli government due to its moral panic narratives and campaign for an anti-cult law. It is therefore not surprising that the ICVC has also emerged in Europe, in particular, on the website of FECRIS (European Federation of Centers of Research and Information on Cults and Sects), as its Israel correspondent.1 For many years, FECRIS has been heavily criticized by international human rights organizations for fomenting social hostility and hate speech towards non-mainstream religions and worldviews, usually of foreign origin, and for stigmatizing members of these groups.2 Religious studies scholars and the scientific establishment in general have also denounced FECRIS for the lack of expertise of their so-called “cult experts”. -

Prayer in a World of Destruction Group 2 Holocaust survivor Reuven Feldschuh was an active Zionist rabbi and educator. While imprisoned in the Warsaw ghetto he kept a diary, in Hebrew, in which he described the following: The kloyz [synagogue] is nearly full. The chazzan’s [cantor’s] modulated tefillah is melodious. An outsider observer of the ba’al tefillah [lit. leader of the prayers, the cantor] and the mitpalelim (worshippers) would not discern that the world is about to fall into an abyss. They all don their talit and tefillin [phylacteries]. If you close your eyes for a moment and do not look at these people, at their gaunt faces... and listen only to the hum of their prayers, you would be sure you happened upon the synagogue at a time of peace and tranquility... Young people are also in the camp of mitpalelim, and their numbers are not few. They, too, are partners to the formation of a mood in which the corporeal is forgotten and the neshama [soul] is surrendered to exalted, supreme worship, in which the dwindling of the body takes no part, and the suffering of the moment is considered naught... I was suddenly filled with a warmth the likes of which I had not felt throughout the war. Someone, or something, had carried me from here, borne me, and planted me amidst the Jews from the Middle Ages, who were fighting and dying for their faith... Out in the world -- murder, theft, robbery, fraud. Out on the street – cold. In the heart – grief and pain. -

To achieve this, the study postulates two contexts in stand-up joking stories: context of the joke and context in the joke. The context of the joke, which is inflexible, embodies the collective beliefs of stand-up comedians and their audience, while the context in the joke, which is dynamic, is manifested by joking stories and it is made up of the joke utterance, participants in the joke and activity/situation in the joke. In any routine, the context of the joke interacts with the context in the joke and vice versa. For analytical purpose, the study derives data from the routines of male and female Nigerian stand-up comedians. The analysis reveals that stand-up comedians perform discourse types, which are specific communicative acts in the context of the joke, such as greeting/salutation, reporting and informing, which bifurcates into self- praising and self denigrating. Keywords: discourse types; stand-up comedy; contexts; jokes. 1. Introduction Humour and laughter have been described as cultural universal (Oring 2003). According to Schwarz (2010), humour represents a central aspect of everyday conversations and all humans participate in humorous speech and behaviour. This is why humour, together with its attendant effect- laughter, has been investigated in the field of linguistics and other disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, sociology and anthropology. -

The Doctrine of the Bible Hilo, Hawaii – June 2008 13 Part 4: Canonicity Canonicity refers to the character of a book that qualifies it for inclusion in the authoritative list of books comprising the Scriptures. Canon is derived from a Greek word meaning “rule” or “measurement” — a “straight rod” (see Ezekiel 42:16 for an example). Canon refers to the set of writings regarded as authentic and definitive for Scripture’s contents. Canonicity has the same basic meaning as the thought involved in talking about “the yardstick by which we determine what belongs in the Bible.” Determining the Canon of Scripture Nowhere in Scripture is there any suggestion that any standard outside of Scripture itself should be used to judge the canon. Deciding which books to include in the Bible should not be a human decision. No church or church council can create or validate the canon of Scripture — they merely give assent to it. The testimony of the Holy Spirit Himself is the only acceptable standard: . 1 Corinthians 2:4–11 – the Holy Spirit is the persuasive power behind the words of Scripture. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 – the Holy Spirit was the force behind the words of the apostles. Romans 8:15–16 – the Holy Spirit bears witness with (and to) our spirit with regard to the recognition of spiritual truth. TITLE: BS400 READING BIBLICAL ARAMAIC WORKLOAD: Duration: 4 Terms Teaching (1 hr p.w.): 26 hrs Language exercises and set reading: 30 hrs Text preparation: 40 hrs Examination preparation and writing: 24 hrs Total commitment: 120 hrs STATUS: Elective CO/PREREQUISITE(S): At least 60% in BS300 Hebrew 3, or at least 70% in BS200 Hebrew 2 if Hebrew 3 is taken concurrently. GENERAL AIM: This unit aims to build on students’ knowledge of Biblcal Hebrew by imparting a working knowledge of biblical Aramaic, enabling them to read all the passages in the Old Testament where Aramaic is employed. The unit focuses on building a comprehensive vocabulary of biblical Aramaic, understanding its grammar and syntax, and applying this knowledge to the translation of the relevant texts in Daniel and Ezra. The purpose of this unit is not only to enable students to work from the original language in all parts of the Old Testament, but also to lay a linguistic foundation for any subsequent study involving Aramaic texts. LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of this course students should be able to: • Recognise and distinguish biblical Aramaic from biblical Hebrew; • Translate all biblical Aramaic texts into good, accurate English; • Parse and reproduce regular forms of the biblical Aramaic verbal system; • Analyse and explain most grammatical and phrase-level syntactical constructions.
