Do you remember what you saw? For hu- mans, the sight would have consisted of a blurry blue haze with any objects pre- sent also appearing blurry. Humans, and their eyes, have evolved on dry land for many thousands of years. The cornea of the human eye is convex which, along with the ob- long-shaped lens, allows the eye to focus light to a single point on the back of the eye. In water, light moves at a slower speed than in air. Without the lenses being able to compensate for the change, the human eye is unable to focus the light underwater, creating a blurred image. On the other hand, seals have the ability to see objects clearly both underwater and on land. Unlike the human eye, the central region of the seal’s cornea is flat. This allows light to pass through unchanged. How- ever, the light needs some way of becoming focused. The seal’s lens is a spherical shape with increased muscle attachments, allowing it to change shape more than a human’s lens is able. Thus, seals use their lenses to fo- Lana Allertz cus light to a single point on the back of the eye, whether viewing an ob- ject on land or underwater. Kara Kozak
